Lanarkshire / Land place names in Coatbridge / Old Monkland
« on: Sunday 18 February 24 17:49 GMT (UK)  »
I've come across a few place names in Coatbridge in my research such as Fells Land, Dundyvan and Tudhopes Land, Dundyvan Road.

Where were these places? and were they tenements named landowners?

Cavan / Killeshandra, Main Street & Castle Street (Gilronan / Duignan Family)
« on: Friday 29 December 23 13:44 GMT (UK)  »
Wondering if anyone has any old photos of Killeshandra's Main Street and/or Castle Street?

I'm particularly interested for the area around where the two streets meet. It is my understanding that my family (Gilronan) once worked in a Blacksmith forge located on Castle Street and also had a boarding house nearby on the Main Street.

My ancestor was Margaret Gilronan (1877-1961) wife of Patrick McManus. She grew up in Killeshandra with her parents James Gilronan (1852-1918, husband of Mary Anne Duignan) who worked as a Blacksmith there. She had a large family, sisters who became the proprietresses of a boarding house and brothers who followed in their father's footsteps and became Blacksmiths.

Argyllshire / Alexander McPherson & Sarah Cameron, Kilbride near Oban
« on: Friday 09 September 22 08:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm researching the family of Alexander McPherson & Sarah Cameron who resided in Kilbride near Oban.

It appears Alexander McPherson married Sarah Cameron 20/01/1788 in Glasgow and both were residing there, the document gives his occupation as a "Taylor".

The couple then seem to relocate to Kilbride near Oban, perhaps they were originally from there? They have at least four children:

Mary McPherson - born 1789
Ann McPherson - born 1792
Alexander McPherson - born 1796
John McPherson - born about 1800 (haven't been able to find a baptismal record)

The baptismal records for Ann and Alexander seem to have the characters "FS" or "FL" after the place name of Kilbride, does anyone know what this may have meant? I will post copies of the original records as replies to this post.

Their son John McPherson, who I am descended through moved to the village of Banton, near Kilsyth, Stirlingshire where he married Jane "Jean" McLeish in 1826 and farmed at the farm of Banton Mains with his family until his death there in 1872.

Lanarkshire / James Shanks, farmer in Blacktongue (New Monkland)
« on: Tuesday 26 October 21 13:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Can anyone help me find James Shanks, farmer in Blacktongue on the 1851 or 1861 Census? The first record I have for him is in the 27th of February 1853 Kirk Session records of New Monkland, he is being questioned alongside his servant Mary Scott for having an illegitimate daughter named Jane Shanks on the 1st of February 1853. He is again recorded on Jane's baptism record on the 27th of March 1853 as being a farmer in Blacktongue and I see he was still the tenant of Blacktongue according to the Valuation Rolls in 1855.

I have reason to believe he was the son of David Shanks and Jane "Jean" Thomson, however I haven't been able to locate him on the 1841, 1851 or 1861 Census records at Blacktongue. Can anyone help? I'm ideally looking to find his death record (eventually!)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Lanarkshire / Kerr Family of Riggend / Other historic families of New Monkland Parish??
« on: Wednesday 01 September 21 20:54 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if any family histories exist relating to the history of any early families of New Monkland? I stumbled across a newspaper article for a distant relative who shares the same Kerr family line as myself and the article states "His family connection with Riggend extended for many generations - indeed, it is a fact that the Kerrs were established there in the days of Wallace."

I will post the article below for anyone interested. I knew the Kerr's had a long history with Riggend and also surrounding areas (namely Berryhill and Crosshead) but there in the time of Wallace, really?? It has made me wonder...

Lanarkshire / 1783 Lesmahagow Census
« on: Friday 30 April 21 21:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I came across references to a 1783 Census of Lesmahagow on several web pages online however I can't seem to find where I can search this Census. Any help? I'm particularly interested to see if my ancestors John Hamilton and his wife, Beatrix "Betty" Watson or any of their children are recorded on it. They were at the farms of Gill and Draffan according to the information on their children's OPR baptisms.

Lanarkshire / Blackridge or Blackrigg, New Monkland
« on: Sunday 14 March 21 18:54 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for help locating Blackridge (also called Blackrigg) a farm in New Monkland Parish. A newspaper article for the death notice of Jane "Jean" Shanks in 1860, states it as being in Clarkston but the only location I can find in New Monkland is Blackrigg, immediately west of Wattston.

I'm wondering if it could maybe be the one near Wattston, however the proprietor looks to have been Dr. William Clark (1855) and then William Towers Clark (1865) who I believe were both proprietors in Clarkston, so the Clarkston location for Blackrigg/ridge would make more sense... Jean's death record only states it as "Blackrigg" no mention of Wattston or Clarkston unfortunately.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Lanarkshire / David Shanks of Stand, Raebog & Drumskioch
« on: Wednesday 04 November 20 12:36 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information relating to David Shanks of the farms Stand, Raebog (Rawbog) or Drumskioch (Drumskeoch) ? I have found a couple of newspaper articles relating to David from 1826 advertising the farms of Stand, Raebog and Drumskioch from the Glasgow Herald stating that he "possessed the lands" of these farms and was advertising them for let.

The reason I am interested is because I am researching Thomas Shanks who farmed at Drumshangie Farm (near Stand), his eldest daughter Ann Jack Shanks married John Allan and the couple then lived at Raebog Farm. Thomas' father was also named David Shanks. His father, David was deceased before 1841 so I know very little about him but I am wondering if the David mentioned in the newspaper articles could be Thomas' father given the connections to these farms...

Any help would be much appreciated!

Lanarkshire / Old photos of Wattston & Greengairs, New Monkland
« on: Saturday 19 September 20 11:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm interested to see if anyone has any old photographs of the houses in Wattston & Greengairs (or any of the farms nearby) prior to the new builds of the 1960s and later. Airdrie Library didn't seem to have many photos of this area.

Thanks in advance.
