World War One / Searching For John Curtin, Irish Guards
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 22:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I've recently come across a sad family story, which has encouraged me to find out more. My Grandad's brother, John Curtin, Irish Guards was killed in WW1, possibly at the Somme. His Mother, my Great Grandmother, tried to trace him after the war...but never did locate him. She even wrote to the Australian Prime Minister at the time for help, because he had the same name as John!

Tried doing the usual searches but didn't come up with anything which ties him up to his birthplace etc. If anyone has access to Irish Guard casualties list, your help would be greatly appreciated.

He was born in Leeds, UK, Jan or Feb 1893. Father- James Curtin, Mother- Mary Curtin

Would be nice to settle this family mystery, for the sake of my grieving Gt Grandma.

Armed Forces / Elswick Battery, John Clancy
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 07:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

My Great Grandad John Clancy lived in Elswick late 1800s. His trade was 'Iron Moulder' and his date of birth was 20th Sept 1858, in Leitrim Ireland.

There was a John Clancy, who volunteered for the Elswick Battery and served in the 2nd Boer war, service number 7236. I am trying to find proof that it is the same John Clancy.

My Aunty provided a picture of him (attached), in what looks like a Royal Artillery uniform...and what could be a South Africa medal.

I have him on the 1891 and 1911 censuses...but he was missing from the 1901 census, which would make sense if he was with the Battery in South Africa.

Any help in confirming my Great Grandad was part of the Elswick Volunteers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

World War Two / Father's RAF Service Number
« on: Friday 10 August 18 18:20 BST (UK)  »
Trying to request my Father's WW 2 service records from the RAF but they have got back to me saying they are unable to locate the records without his service number.

Date of birth no help, as he gave the wrong date of birth to join the war effort underage.

His name was William Brown and joined up around 1941.

If anyone has any idea how I would be able to find his service number, it would be greatly appreciated.
