Staffordshire / Lockett family, Stoke on Trent area
« on: Thursday 16 January 20 15:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I’m trying to find more information on my great-great grandmother, Elizabeth Brown nee Lockett, who I know from census records was born in Stoke on Trent c. 1816.

Elizabeth married a soldier, William Brown (although I can find no marriage record - possibly regimental and potentially overseas?) and had four surviving children. The family settled in the West Midlands after William was discharged from the army on medical grounds in 1854.

If anyone is related to Elizabeth, or has any more information about the Lockett family, I’d be delighted to hear from you.

Thanks.

Jonny

England / Prudence Clayton

Help!

I'm trying to track down the birth and parentage of my 3 x GGM Prudence Clayton.

I have Prudence's marriage record, which states that she married John Dainter on 7th June 1829 (Birmingham St Martin) - no age or name of father are stated.

John's full name was John Ward Dainter but this middle name is not shown.

In the 1861 census Prudence (with the incorrectly transcribed surname Dainty) is recorded with her age given as 54 and birthplace as Shropshire.

I cant'f find Prudence at all in 1841 or 1851 - although I have found her daughter Prudence (aged 4) in 1841 - and I believe she died in 1871.

If any one has any info it owuld be hugely appreciated.

Thanks.

Jonny

England / Matilda Barton and Richard Smith
« on: Tuesday 23 October 18 11:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Is anyone doing any research on Matilda Barton (born High Wycombe c. 1803-1808), married to Richard Smith (born Birmingham, c. 1800)?

According to census records and a Walsall trade directory, Richard was a shoe/bootmaker by occupation.

I have a marriage record from 1824 in High Wycombe for a couple of the same name.

I have full details for their children, one of whom was my great-grandmother Louisa Smith, and subsequent descendants, but if anyone has any information on Matilda and Richard's families that would be a huge help as I've hit a bit of a brick wall.

Thanks!

England / William (aka William Henry) Brown

Hi

I'm trying to trace the parents and ancestors of my great great grandparents William Brown, also known as William Henry Brown, and Elizabeth Lockett or Luckett.

The information I have is that he was born in Manchester in c. May 1814 calculated from his miltary service records which state that William was recruited into the 33rd Regiment of Foot in March 1832 at the stated age of 17 years and 10 months.

William's birthplace is confirmed by census records, and is his year of birth is shown as around 1815.

William married Elizabeth Lockett or Luckett (born Stoke on Trent c 1816) - I have found a marriage record, at Keele in February 1835, that appears to fit - and they had so far as my research has found four surviving children - Eliza Jane (born 1846 in Canada), John (my great grandfather, 1848 in Berwick on Tweed), William Henry (1850, Carlisle) and Sarah Ann Victoria (1854, Fermoy Co. Cork) - the disparate birthplaces clearly reflect William's 22 years of military service.

The family eventually settled in the West Midlands after William was discharged from the army in  1854.

William died in 1886, Elizabeth in the early 1880's.

Does anyone have any information on William and Elizabeth they could share, or (my holy grail...) any photos of the family?

Thanks!!!

Jonny

The Common Room / George Best
« on: Thursday 04 October 18 17:17 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find information about my 2 x great grandfather, George Best.

All I know about him is that George fathered my great-grandmother Ann Best, who was born at 84 Charter Street In Manchester on 21st December 1858.

Ann's mother was Prudence Dainter (sometimes spelt Daintry or Dainty), who was born and brought up in Birmingham.

George is recorded on both Ann's birth certificate and marriage record as her father and although Prudence later married another man, Ann retained the name Best until she married Joseph Ray in 1878. I can find no evidence of Prudence and George ever marrying.

Whether George was Mancunian or a Brummie I've no idea although Charter Street where Ann was born was in a notorious part of Manchester,  and according to a local researcher I spoke to might well have been somewhere an unmarried woman from Birmingham would go to have her baby.

Family oral history/legend tells that George went off on a whaling ship shortly after Ann was born, and that after seven years of no contact Prudence had George declared officially dead and married Henry Keen in 1868 which if the story is true suggests they may have married.

George allegedly showed up again briefly when Ann was older, and introduced himself as her real father.

Any information anyone may have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!  :)
