Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Accidental death 1911
« on: Tuesday 28 August 07 13:02 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can shed some light or point me in the right direction with this puzzle.
I have James Birkett Checkett born 1891 in Lancaster, Lancs. In 1901 he is aged 9 living with his parentsin England (Lancs)
On his Mothers' monumental inscription it states with her is James Birkett Checkett aged 21 accidently killed in Canada 7th Nov 1911.
We can find no trace of him going to Canada, there is a James Checkett aged 10 arriving in Portland USA in 1907, but this is not my James.
Has anyone any ideas where I can look for information?
His sister Catherine did go to Quebec in 1921, but didn't stay as she left England again in 1925 for New York.
Very grateful for any help.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1851/61 Lancaster look up please
« on: Monday 16 July 07 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Okay,This is one I keep putting back in the drawer, but I would like one last go at him, so if anyone is willing to help I'd be extremely grateful!!
I have the marriage cert for James Birkett 27/10/1866 in church of St Thomas and Elizabeth, Lancaster (Roman catholic church0.
He states he's 24 years old, (which fits with future census 1842 birth), his occ; breaksman, residence; Castle Hill, Lancaster, Father James Birkett deceased occ; mechanic.
I cannot find hide nor hair of James Birkett prior to Marriage. All census from 1871 onwards have him born 1842 Lancaster...but where is he on 51/61?

I found 2 deaths before 1866 marriage for James Birkett (senior) one in 1848, one in 1854..so he should appear on at least the 1841...again no joy.

The witnesses at the wedding were the brides family , so again no clues there!
Anyone willing to pull their hair out for a little while :0)))

Breconshire / Garethboxing....our Jones!!
« on: Saturday 16 September 06 08:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi Gareth,
Got a "short" result back from search on the Jones and Thomas lot in Ystradfellte.Parish registers were checked as far back as 1766 and these are all the entries they found:
Jones family:
Evan Jones married Gwenllian Jones (typical!!) 21st June 1817 in presence of 1 unreadable and John Thomas.
Theres' a baptism entry for Gwenllian Jones 14th April 1793 dau of William and Margaret Jones, but it was Evan we were looking to link yours with!

On same marriage page there is Morgan Jones and Diana (cant read surname) both of the parish.

The Thomas family just as short:
Evan Thomas married Mary Lloyd 24th Dec 1810 in presence of David Jones and John Thomas.
Also found a son I hadn't.....baptism of Thomas Thomas 28th Jan 1812 son of Evan Thomas by his wife Mary.

Says by absence of entries it suggests they may have been non-conformists, so there may be no records!

Maybe, when you go again there might be something you find . For how tiny the village was I cant see Evan and your Morgan not being related. Just wish they'd found Evans baptism...The Jones one.

*Ernest Choake* age 24  occ; attendant assylum
Living in Lancaster

Ellen dies and he marries Mary Birkett so 1901 reads;

Nellie age 11months.

Only need to know where assylum was, have families backwards and forwards.
Dont want anyone wasting there time searching for them.

Glamorganshire / Locomotive pub, Hirwaun
« on: Tuesday 05 September 06 06:56 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering if anyone would have any information on an old pub in Hirwaun...The Locomotive. Has been a house since roughly 1920s. Tried googling and only get info on trains..lol!
I know it was built for the railway, it was on Railway Terrace, but when?
Also, can anyone think where there may be photos of said pub?

There is a mention of it in Nansi Selwoods book about Hirwaun/Rhigos, but only the name of pub.
Very Grateful for any ideas, Jane.

Off to work, back lunch time, not ignoring!!
