Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Boot of Belper, 1841
« on: Wednesday 03 October 07 08:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone help please? My husband's mum's side were Boot and lots of them seemed to come from Belper. His great great grandparents were Samuel and Lydia (nee Jennison) and they lived in North Terrace in 1881. Samuel's father is Joseph Boot born c1798 in Belper and he has 3 brothers, William c1802, George, c1806 and Samuel c1808 and a sister Ann c1804, all born in Belper. Their parents, I believe, are Joseph Boot and Mary (nee Walker) This is all the info I have on the latter, not sure where they were born or even when. Can anyone enlighten me please, we are up in Derbyshire the end of this month and hope to do some looking around whilst there, graveyards etc.... many thanks

Northamptonshire / John Smith of Woodford
« on: Friday 02 February 07 10:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I thought I was doing great with my Smiths, I found John Smith born 1854 in Woodford, married to Ellen Edden born 1852 Eydon, Northamptonshire, I then found a young John on the censuses with parents John and Hannah Smith. I looked up their marriage and found in June quarter of 1853 John Smith married Hannah Bryan. Hannah is on the censuses as being born in Hook Norton, Oxfordshire. This all seemed to match up. However, have been in contact with someone also tracing them and she has John Smith marrying Hannah Randell in December quarter of 1853!! I can't find much about Hannah Randell, she was born c1832, so this seems older than my original Hannah. I thought about getting John Jr's birth certificate but see there are 4 for his year in the same, rough, area!!! How on earth can I find out which is the correct one? Talk about the commonest of common names...... lol, thanks in advance!

Staffordshire / Lear from Wolstanton and Burslem
« on: Tuesday 08 August 06 08:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am tracing my mum's side of the family and found William Charles Lear, who was my great grandad, on the census, showing his parents as Ralph and Hannah Lear, I managed to find their year of marriage, but it was listed as Ralph Lea and Hannah Brough, the r was missing from Lear which is why it took me so long. Anyway, I found Ralph's birth in 1847 and sent off for the certificate, I can't find Ralph on the census until about  1871 where he is married to Hannah and living in Harriseahead. His birth certificate shows no father, it says he was born 3rd January 1847 at Gaters Bank, what looks like it may be Kidsgrove and I can't read the last bit, Rancliff or something like that. It is the registration district of Wolstanton and Burslem and the sub district of Tunstall.  a line where the father's name should be and says Mary Lear for his mother, I'm presuming she wasn't married, but why no father's name? Any ideas? How can I find out who his father was. It's made it quite difficult to find his mum on the census as Mary Lear is actually quite a common name, I'm going to plough through the many marriages of Mary Lears in the hopes of maybe finding Ralph with another surname on the census, his mum couldn't write so maybe the census taker assumed his name was the same as his mum's now married name?? Any help greatfully received, thanks in advance

Warwickshire / if born in Spain, where registered?
« on: Monday 10 April 06 10:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have a Sarah and Robert Illsley in several censuses, it says she was born approx 1814 in Spain but that she was a British subject. I've just searched Family Search and found, possibly, her christening, We think she was Sarah Woodhatch, it shows that she was born in 1814, but her christening isn't until 1820, so could this be her? It seems rather late for a christening and I just wondered if she had just come back from Spain and they christened her! The christening was in Sutton Coldfield, Warks.

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / common surname, but unusual first name
« on: Saturday 08 April 06 10:34 BST (UK)  »
We just had my husband's dad's birth certificate which showed his parents names, I thought it was great as he had such an unusual name, but apart from finding his birth and marriage I can't find him on the census. His name was Edden Smith (I know Smith is commong but Edden isn't!) He was born, it seems, in the September quarter of 1891 in Stratford upon Avon, he married in the December quarter of 1911 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, to Ethel Lilian North. This is all I have found so far, I really thought I'd be able to find him easily on the 1901 census, but I just can't! We will send off for his birth certificate later, but wondered if anyone could help until then? Thanks,

Warwickshire / Smith, hard to find???
« on: Thursday 06 April 06 14:07 BST (UK)  »
 ::)
we had my hubby's dad's birth certificate today and it shows his grandfather as Edden Smith, great, that's an unusual name, should be easy to look up, but NO, it's not!! I think I've found his birth in 1891 and I know I've found his marriage to Ethel North in 1911, but I can't find him on the 1901 census at all, I've tried various spellings of the name. It looks like he was born in Stratford upon Avon but he married in Nuneaton, I really thought with this name it would make it easier, but we'll just have to save up and order more certificates I suppose!! Just wanted to sound off a bit.......(my ancestry finished yesterday and the certificate came today lol)

Leicestershire / Illsley in Blackfordby,Leicestershire
« on: Monday 03 April 06 13:39 BST (UK)  »
I'm getting very confused and wondered if anyone could help please? I have a Robert Illsley, born 1813 in blackfordby Leicetershire on the 1851 census, he is married to Sarah, born in Spain and they have several children, including Sophia. This Sophia, born 1844/5 married Francis Illsley, born 1844/5 in 1865, his father is listed on the marriage certificate as Henry Illsley, Potter. I have looked around and can find a Robert Illsley of Blackfordby, 1813 but married to Ann and they only have a daughter called Elizabeth, born in 1831. I can't find any record so far of Robert and Sarah's marriage, Robert died in 1888 in Tamworth, and Sarah died about 1869 in West Bromwich. What we're trying to find out is if Francis, born 1820 and Robert, 1813 may be brothers and that Francis, born 1845 and Sophia may be cousins! I can't actually find any census of a Robert and Ann Illsley!! Help PLEASE, thanks in advance  ???
