Other Countries / St Helena Marriage
« on: Monday 04 September 23 13:52 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know how I go about tracing a marriage in St Helena.
Mitchel Reid (Royal Engineers ) married Mary Keily on St Helena on 3rd June 1866.
I got This information from the birth of 2 of their children who were registered at at Garrioch Barracks Maryhill.
I have looked on the NA site and FindMyPast and found  no details any advice on where to try next will be appreciated.

Northumberland / Photo of George Collier
« on: Monday 17 April 23 06:33 BST (UK)  »
George Collier 1832- c1892 was in the army for pretty much all his adult life.
He began in the 10th Hussars (becoming Troop sergeant Major)and in  later life joined a North East regiment. His obituary in c1892 was titled Death of an old Soldier detailed his postings to the Crimea and India.
George married Mary Elizabeth Lockwood in 1858. The couple lived in many locations and had many children. I would like to try and trace a photo of George. I wrote to the 10th Hussars museum but they never replied and was wondering if any of his other descendents had family pictures they would be willing to share a copy of.

Caithness / Sutherland of Wester watten
« on: Monday 28 November 22 09:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm currently trying to trace  a possible connection between Walter Sutherland (who married Jannet Morison c 1765  but no trace of this marriage in the records) and Walter Sutherland who was baptised in Orkney in 1676.
I think Walter must have been born in c 1740's and Jannet. I have no proof as to where. They had 3 children that I can see, John 1766, Kenneth c1767(mother's maiden name says Manson) and Walter 1769 all born in Wester Watten.
I know this may be a long shot but it would help to rule it in or out.Am I barking up the wrong tree?
Has anyone researched Sutherlands or Morisons/mansons  in Wester Watten?
 Many Thanks

Norfolk / Thomas Key
« on: Thursday 04 August 22 10:04 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking for the marriage of Thomas Key to Elizabeth in an around Norwich(probably) in about 1750/51.
Their children seem to have been born c1752 -1758 and baptised in st Peter Mancroft, Norwich.
There seems to be an earlier Thomas and Elizabeth having children baptised there from c1740. It could potentially be the same couple. But the problem remains the same in that I can't see a likely marriage. I can find a Thomas Dey marrying an Elizabeth Lacey or a Thomas Keed marrying Eliza  and wondered if they might be mistranscribed or misheard by the clerk. Has anyone any ideas?

Many thanks

Other Countries / Where to begin
« on: Wednesday 25 May 22 17:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
This is not my first post about this particular person but I have been brick walling for a long time.  An ancestor of mine died in Russia in October 1853.

I know this because his widow put a notice in the newspaper(the Leicester Chronicle) about his death.
My question is how do I begin trying to discover what happened to him?
He wasn't in the army but gave his occupation as mechanic in the 1851 census (Birmingham)
I have applied to the GRO and there is no official  record of him.

I assume that His wife must have been notified privately by a friend or colleague. I am also guessing that his body was never brought back to England but buried in Russia. Probably in some unmarked grave. The newspaper notice mentioned a short illness so I presume something infectious that neccessitated quick disposal.

I wonder what he was doing there as in the prelude to war October 1853 was probably a bad time to go sightseeing. I think he was working and that  if I could discover who he might  have been working for I can answer part of the mystery.
His name was Elijah L Lockwood and he was at a place on the Volga river when he died. The newspaper said he was at St Brisks  but there is/ was  no record of such a place so I assumed Simbirsk. I looked at the church records but there is no mention of him.

Any pointers greatly received.

One Name Studies: T to Z / Unthank
« on: Monday 30 August 21 07:59 BST (UK)  »
I have discovered Elinor Unthank in my family tree. All I know about her is that she married John Jennings in Kendal Westmorland in 1750.
Would like to hear from anyone else with information on the Unthank family tree.

Thanks B

Norfolk / Susan Sparham
« on: Thursday 27 May 21 07:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I'm currently trying to trace the baptism of Susannah Sparham who married Robert Yallop in Braydeston in 1724. I have been looking mainly on FindMyPast and I have found a baptism in Denton in 1695 which says Susannah  daughter of Will and Susannah Sparrom.Robert and Susannah mainly lived around Strumpshaw. Is this birth too far away?
I have also found a marriage in 1693 in Norwich, St John de Sepulchre for a William Sparrow and Susanna Branch. Could this be her parents as the entry says William was of Denton. Only problem is the difference in surname. The marriage entry definitely says Sparrow but the baptism says Sparrom. Neither of them say Sparrham so am I barking up the wrong tree altogether but then spelling was erratic and things got mis transcribed.
Norfolk family history Society draws a blank whilst Free Reg has a record of both marriages.
Would be interested to see what anyone thinks of the links I've made.

Norfolk / A Research knot/blunder
« on: Monday 10 May 21 07:54 BST (UK)  »
I made an accidental discovery which now seems to throw my research into question. My Ancestor William Key Married Susannah Briggs in 1803.
I found them in the census in 1841 living with John Briggs whom I assumed to be her father (my first mistake). I thought her Parents were John Briggs and Elizabeth Jacob's who married in 1777 but not only can I not find any trace of a baptism for Susannah around 1781 ( her birth on census and I know it could be up to 5 years either way) I came across a baptism for John Briggs in 1785 who was described as "the illegitimate son of John Briggs and Elizabeth Jacobs". I am confused as by 1785 John and Elizabeth had been married for 8 years. It was at that point that I queried why I thought they were Susannah's Parents as I only have the census evidence to go on. So all in all a bit of a blunder but the " illegitimate" puzzles me alot. Has anyone else come across a similar thing?
