Lancashire / Burials, St. Thomas, Ardwick
« on: Monday 09 January 23 20:35 GMT (UK)  »
Have located a burial for John Blakeley, Jan 24, 1851 in the above cemetery.  He is buried with a young girl, Caroline Snow, Apr 15 1817.
Although they appear to have nothing in common, John married a Mary Snow, Dec 21, 1828 in Prestwich.  Mary Snow was baptized June 5 1808 at St. Chad, Cheetham Hill, parents George and Ann or Nancy (Brown) Snow.  As far as I can tell George and Ann had their first child in 1790 and regularly at 3 or 4 years apart.  Mary was the last born in 1809, is it probable that Caroline Snow born about 1813 was another child in that family that John Blakeley was interred in the same plot?  Caroline's abode was listed as Swarsbrook St. on the burial transcription.  Have been unable to find anything related to that as well.

Any suggestions on where I can find information or burial protocols for the time period?  Thanks.

Cheshire / Place of birth, Hatton or Hutton and is this anywhere near Lymm?
« on: Friday 16 October 20 01:44 BST (UK)  »
Have a William Jackson born abt 1796 on the 1851 census of Lymm.  Clip attached.  Subsequent census he lists himself as born Lymm.  Can anyone verify the writing of place of birth.  Understand Hatton didn't have a parish church, what would be the most likely place for a baptism?

Thanks in advance.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Notation on RC baptism record

Could use some suggestions on if this contains Latin or a mixture with English. The lady was baptized in 1878 so this was added to the record quite some time later.

Somerset / Legal marriage age 1767
« on: Sunday 09 August 20 22:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Have a marriage entry from 1767.  Not sure of the bride's birth date, estimated at 1750.  Groom was born in 1703.  The entry shows married by license with consent of parents.  Understand the full age for marriage was 12 or 14? If that were true she shouldn't have needed consent, or was much younger than 17 and the presumed birth date is wrong. This brings me to my next question, why would a young girl of approximately 17 years marry a man of 64?  He died 43 days after the marriage.  Trying to get some perspective on this union.

Thank you.

Wicklow / Smyth, Byrne, Walsh - Blessington Parish
« on: Saturday 13 June 20 18:09 BST (UK)  »
Have finally found a birth and marriage in Blessington through rootsireland.  Marriage between Joseph Smyth and Mary Byrne, 1839.  Witnesses Michael Byrne & Biddy Cavana.  First son born (John) 1840, sponsored by Michael Walsh and Mary Smyth. Second born, Mary in 1842, sponsors Charles Walsh and Jane Behan.

In 1871 this Smyth (Smith) family was living in Liverpool and had a John Walsh, nephew, living with them.  This nephew was born in Blessington to a Michael Walsh and Mary Smyth in 1850, they were married in Blessington 1847.  His sponsors were James Byrne and Jane Behan.

I am thoroughly confused with the connections between these people and don't know where to begin unravelling this.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1841 Manchester census
« on: Wednesday 03 June 20 19:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Any help on this entry for John Blakeley?  Have no idea on his occupation. Also is that an I in last column of where born, Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts?  He died before 1851 and his marriage registration gives no clue on his origins.
TIA

Lancashire / Death certificate, West Derby
« on: Monday 01 June 20 20:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi.
Looking to order a death certificate.  Years ago I always ordered through Antony Lambert and was able to specify a name, birthplace, or informant to make sure I was getting the correct one.  He is no longer offering this service.  :'(

In FreeBMD there are 2 deaths for Joseph Smith in West Derby.  One is Sep quarter, 1874, age 51.  The other is Dec quarter, 1874, age 54.  Also found a RC burial for a Joseph Smith, Nov. 1874 but it shows his age at 61. 1871 census has him at age 54.

Any ideas of how to narrow the chances of getting the correct one?

Thanks.

Lancashire / Liverpool RC marriage
« on: Friday 14 February 20 18:41 GMT (UK)  »
Have posted before regarding a marriage between Mary Ann Smith and John Sherriff. Still looking. Only thing I know for certain is the couple had their first known child John - 18 Jan 1865, Joseph - 29 Jun 1866, both boys died in 1866.  Both boys were baptized in RC churches in Liverpool as were subsequent children, all under the surname Sherriff or variable spelling.

After many years have been unable to find a marriage either in Ireland, where Mary Ann Smith was born or in Lancashire.  Mary Ann remarried in Liverpool in 1876 so assume John Sherriff died sometime before.  Can track her from the date of her marriage.  Have been unable to find an 1871 census entry for the family.

Based on assumptions believe the Sherriff/Smith marriage was possibly in 1865 or earlier.  In frustration have been going through Liverpool RC registers.  There is a marriage 7 Oct 1863 between John Sherriff Blayney and a Mary Ann Smith.  Mary Ann Smith's parents, Joseph and Mary are a match to other information I have.

Question: Has anyone run across a surname being dropped and would there have been a reason?  There are a number of trees on Ancestry with this family but few sources.  None have a marriage for this couple. Census entry for 1871 has not been found or posted on any tree.

Any opinions if this may be a credible lead to follow or will I be wasting my time?
