Armed Forces / Help needed researching in the Great War period & South Africa
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 19:10 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas William Fisher was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire in 1879 the son of Samuel Tanner Fisher and his wife Alice Ann nee Jobling.  I have recently been sent a newspaper cutting dating from 1918 which is about Thomas William and his brothers Harry and John Savile Fisher during the First World War.  According to this article Thomas William was in the 6th Dragoon Guards (the Carabiniers) where he was a signalling instructor and he served in the South African War (1899-1902).  He joined the South African Police in 1911.  At the outbreak of WWI in 1914 he applied several times to enlist and was eventually successful joining the Second Mounted Brigade of Signallers.  At the time the article was written in February 1918 he had risen to the rank of Sergeant Major.

In case anyone is wondering about the other two brothers, Harry and John S.Fisher.  My friend and I have been able to research them to some extent.  Both of them came home to England and their records survived although damaged in the WWII fire. Thomas William presents and altogether different challenge; I have not done much research in foreign parts and none at all in South Africa so any help anyone can give will be much appreciated.

England / Walter Thomas HURREN & Minnie LYNAM
« on: Monday 09 March 09 10:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I've been trying to find the marriage between Walter Thomas HURREN and Minnie LYNAM so far without success.  It probably took place between 1913 and 1917.  I know virtually nothing of Walter except his name and the fact that he and Minnie were living at Hanley, Staffordshire in 1917.  Minnie was born in Douglas Isle of Man in 1892 the daughter of Samuel LYNAM and his wife Hannah (nee CLARKE) [my great grandfather's sister].

I've searched the GRO Marriage Indexes and the "Lawson" marriage indexes on the I.O.M. F.H.S. website and found not a sniff of a clue. Does anyone have any ideas where else I could search?

New Zealand Completed Requests / Voyage of the "Chile" 1875 - London to New Zealand
« on: Friday 19 October 07 21:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I think Edward & Mary Craine emigrated to New Zealand aboard the "Chile" which left London in June 1875 and arrived New Zealand in September. Thomas Craine and Margaret (his wife?) appear also to have been on aboard the vessel.  Mary Craine was my great grandfather's sister.

Using various web sites (mostly NZ) I've been trying to confirm that these four did travel to New Zealand.  I've even found a newspaper the "Taranaki Herald" that reported a tea party given to welcome the new immigrants but sadly it didn't give any names. :(   I understand that the "Chile" disembarked 105 passengers at New Plymouth, taking a further 63 on to other destinations including Nelson.

I've known for some time that the Craine family lived at Stanway where they were farmers. Edward died in 1913 and Mary in 1918 both are buried in Feilding Cemetery.  It would be the icing on the cake to find the name of the ship they travelled on to their new life.  So I'd be very grateful if someone can help me find a passenger list for the "Chile's" voyage in 1875. :)

Lancashire / Help! Trying to find Thomas William FISHER
« on: Saturday 03 March 07 16:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out what happened to Thomas William FISHER.  He was born in 1874 at Barnsley, Yorkshire (of a family that came mainly from Lancashire) and christened at Barrow-in-Furness, Lancs. Dec 1874   His father was John FISHER and his mother Sarah FISHER nee HIRD.  I have a contact who is Tom's great great grand-daughter and she is anxious to visit his grave if possible this summer.  (Tom was my grandmother's brother).  We know from family knowledge that Tom died during the First World War. His widow, Lucy, remarried in March 1922.

Thomas enlisted in the army at the beginning of 1894 joining the Cheshire Regiment, by 1900 he was a corporal and in 1902 he acquired his sergeant's stripes.  In 1907 he married Lucy BARNES at Chester.  Thomas left the army in August 1908 and was placed on the reserve.  He and Lucy had three children so far as I know  - Thomas Herbert born 1908 at Chester, Elsie born in 1911 and Bertha in 1913 both at Barrow-in-Furness.

At the outbreak of war in 1914 Thomas was called up but I can find no trace of his service thereafter.  He is not mentioned on the Roll of Honour nor on Soldiers died in the Great War.  I've also tried looking for a death certificate but cannot find one that would fit the conditions - having a common name like FISHER makes it more difficult to work out the possibilities.  ???  Would he have been drafted into a local Lancashire Regiment rather than going back to serve with the Cheshires?

As things stand Thomas just disappears into thin air.  ???  I'd be very grateful for any suggestions where to look next

Australia / Ships to Australia
« on: Monday 15 May 06 08:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I now know the name of the ship which took my great grandfather's brother and his wife to Victoria, Australia in 1876.  I've tried to find out more about her but so far with little success.  Maybe I've been looking in the wrong places.  Does anyone have any idea where to search?  The ship's name was "Marpesia"

Hoping someone can help

England / Searching for Susanna's Marriage
« on: Friday 12 May 06 08:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Some weeks ago someone uncovered a gravestone which had been lain flat and had become covered with grass in the churchyard at Southwell Minster.  The Inscription was brought to my attention and I was asked if it would be possible to find out about the people mentioned thereon.

They were William CADDICK of Basford, Nottinghamshire father of Susanna WEDGE who was buried aged 30 with her infant son William John aged 3 days in April 1826.  Susanna was the wife of John WEDGE governor of a local workhouse.

I have been able to trace Susanna's family at Basford and back to Birmingham.  She was christened at St Phillip's Birmingham in 1795 the daughter of William CADDICK and Susanna SHORT. However I have been unable to find any trace of her marriage to John WEDGE.  I have looked on the IGI and have run a search on the Notts FHS marriage index which has most of the Nottinghamshire Parish Register marriages listed but there was nothing relevant.  So I am now wondering if the marriage took place in the Birmingham area but given the type of work John and Susanna seem to have been in they could have married anywhere in the country. Does anyone know of any on-line indexes or places to search for marriages?

I've found the CADDICK family but I know next to nothing about John WEDGE.  Is anyone researching the surname WEDGE?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Sheffield burials
« on: Wednesday 19 April 06 21:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi.

Can anyone tell me where I can find a list of burials for Burngreave Cemetery in Sheffield?  Annie DOWSWELL was buried there in 1927 (died 26 June) and I'm wondering if her husband William is also buried there.  He died in 1895 aged 39 years.

One Name Studies: T to Z / WEDGE
« on: Saturday 08 April 06 22:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Is anyone doing a one name study of WEDGE?

I'm interested in John WEDGE who was the Governor of Thugarton Hundred Incorporation (later Southwell Workhouse) in 1826.  John married Susannah CADDICK.  Does anyone have details of when and where they were married?

Susannah died in her first child-bed at the age of 30 in April 1826 and is buried in the churchyard of Southwell Minster - her child, William John, died too and is buried in the same grave.
