London and Middlesex / Hoxton location help
« on: Saturday 04 September 21 15:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,
I wondered if a residence location, ‘Willshires’, Hoxton (1830) means anything to you? I’d be grateful for a steer.
Thanks

Hi everyone, I’m looking for help in locating the above address (realising, of course, that it’s almost certainly no longer extant). My fourth great grandfather lived here, while plying his trade as an Accountant. I’d be very grateful for any further information, or directions as to where I might find an answer.
Many thanks

Can anyone tell me in the 1890s, what would a Time Keeper’s Assistant have done? Would they have been station-based or on the move?

Thanks everyone

Armed Forces / British Army Barracks in Ireland 1876-1890
« on: Wednesday 30 January 19 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know of a list of barracks used by the British Army during this period? It seems my 2x Great Grandfather (and his Irish wife and daughter?) may have spent a number of years, while he was serving, in Ireland. The list I got from the Rifles Brigade museum only says ‘Ireland’. As I’ve no idea what happened to any of them, I’m looking for possible leads. Ireland seems a possibility....

Armed Forces / Rifle Brigade 2nd Battalion 1873-1890
« on: Sunday 27 January 19 21:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,
Does anyone know the whereabouts of the above battalion from 1873-1890. My 2x Gt Grandfather (Wlliam) Charles Salter b. 1850, was a Private with that unit. He was in Birr/Parsonstown in 1873 (he married a local girl - I have a digital copy of the certificate). I BELIEVE he may have been sentenced for desertion in 1876 (in Winchester). By 1891 he was dead, but I have no idea how or where. It would be so helpful to know where the unit was/what actions they might have been engaged in. I cannot find any 1881 Census details for the family at all. His wife was Mary Carroll and daughter Mary Ellen Salter b 1876??.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Devon / Plymouth workhouse
« on: Sunday 13 January 19 16:32 GMT (UK)  »
I believe my 2x Gt Grandmother could have been in Plymouth workhouse in the 1900s. Does anyone know:
  • When it closed
  • Where people might have been discharged to locally, if still unable to subsist?
