I have an ancestor married in Amsterdam in 1640. I have attached a copy of the record from the Amsterdam Archive but am unable to read it. Can anyone help with the part in handwriting
I am rather hoping that is says where the couple were from, as I suspect that they were protestant refugees from France.
Thanks
Derek

Berkshire / Hains/Haines family in West Berks
« on: Wednesday 28 April 10 10:26 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please help me I am looking for the baptism of Edmund HAINS/HAINES ca 1805 in west Berkshire probably near the Wiltshire border.

The person I am looking for claims in the census 1851 to 1871 to have been born in Bishopstone, Wilts but there is no record of him in either of the Bishopstones in Wilts or surrounding Wilts parishes.
Bishopstone is right on the Berks border and it is possible that they moved to Bishopstone when Edmund was young, hence his claim to have been born there.
He married in Chelsham, Surrey in 1824 to Ann from Wroughton, Wiltshire.

A lot of the nearby Berks villages are in the IGI and while there are Haines there is no Edmund, however Watchfield, Wolstone, Baulking, Shellingford,  Great Farringdon, Letcombe Bassett, Goosey, Hatford, Fawley, Chilton are not on the IGI. Does anyone know if there are any transcriptions of these parishes that I could purchase or are they on a Genealogy web site somewhere?

The IGI does list an Edmand Hains baptised Coleshill on 20 OCT 1811 but unless this is a late baptism he would have been 13 when he married, with Ann being 20.
If anyone has access to the Coleshill records it would be much appreciated if you could check the record and see if there is any note regarding his birth date or age .

Many thanks
Derek

Somerset / Tenancy agreements
« on: Monday 31 August 09 17:01 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor Thomas Shenton was buried on 13 Dec 1795 in Chelvey.
The burial record says 'He lived 48 years in the Parsonage House as Tenant on the Glebe under the Rectors of Chelvey'.

Does anyone know if these tenancy agreements with the church were written down and if so where were they kept?
The Somerset RO do not seem to have any.

Thanks

Devon / Looking for Ann MOCK b ca 1783
« on: Monday 24 August 09 15:07 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the baptism of the Ann Mock who married Samuel Palmer on 21 Jun 1807 in Hennock.  Ann died 24 Feb 1851 age 68 so unfortunately missed the 1851 census.
The name Mock seems to be a North Devon name.
Has anyone found any occurrences of the Mock name in South Devon?
Many thanks

England / Looking for Hippett or Hippetts
« on: Monday 03 August 09 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone come across the surname Hippett/Hippetts?
My 4*GGrandmother Susannah was a widow when she married in 1799 in Bristol. I have a copy of the marriage entry and although it is difficult to read it is Hippetts or something very close.
I need to find her first marriage, she died in 1838 age 76 so born early 1760's so possibly married for the first time in the 1780's.
The B&AFHS Diocese of Bristol and their North Sonerset CD's and the IGI do not list any possible marriages.
Thanks

New Zealand Completed Requests / Jeffryes - arrived NZ 1874
« on: Monday 09 March 09 19:30 GMT (UK)  »
A relative Henry Jeffryes b. 1849 and wife Ellen (White) sailed on the Schichallion from London 10th February 1874 - arrived Hawkes Bay (Napier) 26th May 1874. After that they just disappear.
I have just checked the new NZ BMD index and there are no births or deaths for Jeffryes and none under variant spellings.
Anyone have any ideas as to how I can find what happened to them after they arrived in NZ?
Thanks

The Common Room / Where is Downs?
« on: Wednesday 18 February 09 17:55 GMT (UK)  »
In looking for James Oldfield transported to Tasmania on the Bussorah Merchant in 1829 I noticed that a number of convict transports between 1829 and 1834 are shown a sailing from Downs. The 3 that I have spotted are Harmony 1828, Bussorah Merchant 1829 and Southworth 1833.
The only clue I have is that a number of convicts on the Bussorah Merchant were held on the Justitia Hulk at Woolwich. Could Downs be an alternative name for a port somewhere on the Thames?
Does anyone know where/what Downs is?
Thanks

Devon / Who is Mary KNOWLING?
« on: Wednesday 01 October 08 19:01 BST (UK)  »
My GGG Grandmother Mary Stediford or Stidiford was baptised on the 30 Mar 1773 in Bishopsteignton the illegitimate daughter of Mary Knolling or Knowling.
I have recently obtained from the Devon RO copies of two removal orders for Mary Knowling from Kingsteignton.
The first is dated 23rd April 1772 and orders the removal of Mary Knowling aged about 14 to Sampford Courtnoy (sic).
Denise Hunt the OPC for Sampford Courtenay has very kindly checked the parish register for her birth ca 1758 and finds no Knowlings in Sampford Courtenay around that time. So why they were attempting to remove her to Sampford Courtenay is a bit of a mystery.
The second removal order is dated 7th December 1772 and orders the removal of Mary Knowling spinster to Bishopsteignton. No mention of age this time so possibly she was now considered an adult. Given the baptism date of her daughter, assuming that it is the same person she must have been 5 or 6 months pregnant.
Presumably the first removal order failed for some reason and the second was then served. Why she was accepted in Bishopsteignton is unknown as she does not seem to have been born there and there are no surviving grants of settlement for her or any Knowling family. It is possible that her family were granted settlement in Bishopsteignton and then moved on leaving no trace in the record.
I have not found any bastardy orders, no sign of support from the parish (I checked the few years after the child’s birth) and no marriage or death.
What happened to Mary Knowling where did she come from?
Interestingly on the same date 7th December 1772 there is a removal order for Joseph Stiddiford husbandman from Kingsteignton to Ideford. Is he the father of Mary’s child? What happened to him?
The IGI only has 2 baptisms for Mary Knowling ca 1758 one older and the other much younger. Has anyone found a baptism for Mary Knowling ca 1758?
