Scotland / Jennet McIntosh 1773
« on: Friday 30 April 21 17:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am trying to find info on a Jennet McIntosh b. 1773-1852 in either Perthshire or Inverness-shire.  In 1801, she and her husband Donald Smith emigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada, and settled in Mt Thom, Pictou County, NS.  Donald Smith was born in Perthshire ca. 1762-1843.  I believe there was  one daughter born in Scotland, Elizabeth in 1798, while the others were born at Mt Thom.  I believe that Jennet McIntosh may possibly be related to the Chisholms of Inverness.

I have tried Scotlands People and other resources bu haven been able to in any birth or marriage records for Jennet McIntosh or Donald Smith.

Thank you for any assistance!!

England / William Ludlow Hudson 1777-1865
« on: Friday 30 April 21 17:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am trying to find information on a William Ludlow Hudson b. 1777 in Yorkshire, England.  When he married Catherine Glennie 8 Oct 1835 in Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, William was described as a 57 yr old widower.  I am unsure of his exact date or place of birth but his record of death in 1865 indicates that he was born in 1777 in Yorkshire, England.  I have tried looking for his first marriage record in England but not sure if that is where his first marriage took place.  Children born in NS were John William, Mary Elizabeth, Isabella, possibly William, Charles Edward Richard Ray, George, Llewellyn, Catherine Tabitha, Donald Glennie Daniel, Annie Eliza and Sarah Jane (my line).

I often see the last name spelled as Hodgson - is this an alternative spelling for Hudson?

Family History Beginners Board / Dewar Families Of Fife, Scotland
« on: Tuesday 27 April 21 00:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I was wondering whether the Dewar families who lived in Fife originally came from Perthshire? I am still searching for my Dewar family -- Alexander Dewar & unknown McGregor -- Alexander's wife was related to the McGregor/Graeme family of Fowlis Wester, Perthshire, Scotland. Gregor McGregor b. ca. 1752, son of Alexander & Margaret was a maternal uncle of Alexander Dewar's son, John, who emigrated to Nova Scotia.  I have searched ScotsPeople, fam.search, ancestry, etc. and have done a number of DNA tests.

Family History Beginners Board / Donald W Smith & Jennet McIntosh
« on: Saturday 10 October 20 20:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am trying to find information on my 3rd great grandparents who emigrated from Scotland to Mt Thom, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1801:  Donald W Smith and Jennet Mc/MacIntosh.

I believe Donald W Smith ca. 1776-1843 was from Rannoch, Perthshire, Scotland.  I am not quite sure where Jennet McIntosh ca. 1772-1852 was from -- most likely Perthshire too but maybe roots in Invernessshire.  Donald W Smith was one of the first landholders and farmers to settle at Mt Thom.  He and Jennet raised 5, possibly 6, daughters - Sarah b. 1804 married Andrew Creighton originally from Dumfries (my line); Nancy b. 1806 married Abiel Brown, Gracietta b. 1816 married Alexander Morrison, Abigail b. 1817 m. John Sinclair (he emigrated 1831) ; Elizaabeth b. 1798 Scotland m. Donald Munro; and ?Jennet?.

I know there are a lot of Smiths but am hoping someone might recognize this family!!

Thank you.

Perthshire / Cathrine Stewart b. 1822 Perthshire or Lanarkshire, Scotland
« on: Monday 05 August 19 03:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello, my 2nd great grandmother was Cathrine Stewart b. 1822 in place unknown, Scotland.   Cathrine emigrated to Nova Scotia (NS), Canada in 1847 according to Canada census records and married Ebenezer Bezanson in 1850/1.  They settled in Guysborough County, NS, before moving to Pictou County, NS.  Cathrine and Ebenezer had 6 children - John Allen, William George, Alexander, Eliza, Daniel Donald James, and Lydia J Bezanson.  Catherine died in March 1903 and is buried in the Bezanson Cemetery, Mt Thom, Pictou Co, NS.

On John Allen Bezanson's death record, their eldest son and my great grandfather, it states that his mother was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire but this is uncertain.  Different family trees show her family as living in Perthshire so I am uncertain as to which is correct. I have tried looking in every place that I can find for information but no luck so far.  I haven't been able to find her in the Scottish census records of 1841 -- none of the Cathrine's are living with their families.

There is a story that a Jane Stewart who married Donald Kennedy in Stirling, and emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1848 with their two children, Thomas & Elizabeth, was Cathrine Stewart's sister -- just have to prove this.

Appreciate any info on possible other records to search -- I have even tried Scotland's People, but couldn't determine if she was on there.

Thank you,

jane

Perthshire / John Dewar from Perthshire, Scotland
« on: Thursday 01 August 19 21:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am seeking info on the family of my 3rd great grandfather, John Dewar, born ca. 1776, who emigrated to Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada ca. 1801/3 from Perthshire, Scotland.  He settled close by his maternal uncle, Gregor McGregor, who had received a land grant in Merigomish, Nova Scotia, for his service in the British army during the American Revolution.  There was also a land grant to a Robert Dewar but not sure if or how he might be related to John -- perhaps an uncle?

About 1804, John Dewar married Rebecca McDonald, daughter of an old soldier Joseph McDonald and settled in Barney's River, Nova Scotia.  Joseph's eldest daughter, Isabella, married John's uncle, Gregor MacGregor.  Joseph McDonald was originally from the village of Crofton, Dull, Perthshire while Gregor MacGregor was born ca. 1752 in Balquhidder, Perthshire. I think Gregor's father may have been a son of Alexander MacGregor (alias Graeme/Graham) born 1706.

There is an article written from an interview with Joseph Dewar, a son of John & Rebecca Dewar, which states that John's father was an Alexander Dewar from Loch Tay/Breadalbane watershed area of Perthshire but no village was provided (perhaps Blair Atholl??)  John Dewar's mother was a MacGregor, first name unknown.  I haven't much more info on John other than a small obit in the paper when he died in 1862.

Thank you.

Cumberland / Wilson's from Longcroft, Cumberland, England
« on: Friday 19 July 19 19:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am seeking information on my 3rd great grandparents, eg. parents, dates of birth, etc.  The only document that I have seen from England is a copy of their marriage record:  William Johnston and Esther Wilson both of Longcroft were married by banns by John Curate of the church (St Michael's??) in Bowness on Solway on 12 July 1810.  Witnesses to the marriage were Richard Wilson and Ferdinand Ritson.

I believe William was born about 1789 and Esther in 1785.  They had four children who were baptized at Bowness on Solway - James, 1811, John, 1813, Mary, 1815, and Joseph, 1818.  The family emigrated to Truro, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, Canada after the birth of Joseph where more children were born.  Their youngest, Jane Johnston, was my 2nd great grandmother.

I am not sure whether a naming pattern for their children was used but if it was, then, William's father would be a James Johnston and Esther's parents would be John & Mary Wilson -- but this is only supposition.

Appreciate any suggestions/assistance from anyone.

Thank you.

Jane
