Galway / Research Help
« on: Thursday 10 August 23 15:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

What year were BMD registered from in Ireland and how  would I go about ordering copies certificates for my Irish ancestors?

I’m also trying to figure out some ancestry DNA connections that appear to be connected through my Murray line.
If anyone can offer help/guidance I’d very much appreciate it as I always hit a road block when researching my Irish ancestors.

This is what I know:

Sabina Murray, born about 1820 in Ireland. She married Thomas Mullins in Dunmore, Co. Galway in 1836.

They had 3 children born in Ireland: John baptised 1837, Thomas baptised 1840, and Mary baptised 1843. The address on the baptism records is Darrary.

Sponsors on the baptisms etc were: John Mullen, Mary Mullen, Andrew Murray, Sarah Murray, Dominic Mullen, Margaret Molarky, Daniel Mullin, Margaret Gannon/Cannon.

Several DNA matches have the surname Mullarkey and Murray but I can’t find a common ancestor to connect everyone together.

There is a baptism for a Thomas Connelly in Darrary in 1844, parents Sarah Murray and Thomas Connelly. Sponsor Sabina Murray. I believe Sabina and Sarah were sisters but can’t find any documentation to prove it.

I’m stuck on what to do next and wondered if anyone could help me?

Thank you 🙏🏻

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Look up request: James Jones
« on: Thursday 13 July 23 15:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm researching my GGM's first husband and the children they had together and am finding some conflicting info. I wondered if anyone would be able to help sanity-check what I have?

James Jones m. Sarah Carter on 19 Oct 1910, in Stockton Heath.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F3FV-GZJ
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F3LN-R43

In 1911 the couple lived at 23 Bridgewater Street with their son James Richard Jones (the address on his birth cert. matches his parent's parish marriage record).

James Jones Snr was 25 yrs old on the 1911 census, making his birth year abt 1886. It also says he was born in Ludlow, Shropshire. There were 5x James Jones born 1886 +/- 2 years in Ludlow. I don't have a mother's maiden name for him yet.

I believe James Jones Snr died before Nov 1919 as Sarah married my GGF, Joseph White, on 15 Nov in Warrington. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NFNZ-WX8. She is listed as a widow, living at 10 Bridgewater Street, and the ages/parents' names all match up.

I wondered if James and Sarah had any more children, and after searching the Lanc-OPC for baptisms using the surname Jones + mmn Carter, I found:

Beatrice Evelyn Jones b. 1912 Warrington
Frederick Thomas Jones b. 1914 Warrington
Constance Mabel Jones b. 1916 Warrington

All 3 of these children have the address 10 Bridgewater Street on their baptism and birth certs.... but their father is listed as James Hill Jones. Every other record I've found for him lists him as just James Jones. What's the likelihood that I've mixed families up here? Everything else seems to match up, but where has the middle name Hill come from?

I've searched the census and can only find 1x James Hill Jones living in Warrington with a father called Richard (as per the marriage record). That address is 48 Howard Street and shows a sibling called Beatrice E which would correlate, but James' birthplace is Worcestershire. There are no other James Jones b. abt 1886 on any census in Warrington.

Another thing is, several ancestry trees list James Jones serving in the military (soldier number 16268) and died in action in 1917 in France. But I've searched Fold3 for his soldier number and the pension ledger gives his name as James Joseph Jones - so I think that's a completely different person.

Can anyone help to fill in the blanks, please? Where was James prior to 1911? Was he in the military? When did he die?

Thanks for reading, sorry it's a lot of info to digest!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Lookup Request - Thomas Dooling
« on: Thursday 04 May 23 10:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I was wondering if someone might be able to help.

I'm trying to find a birth/baptism record for Thomas Dooling b. Sept 1877 in Bradford. Parents Daniel Dooling & Annie Cahill.

I've looked on FreeBMD, GRO, FindMyPast, and Ancestry and can't find anything. I've tried 5-10 years on either side and tried various spellings of his surname.

I have his DOB as 17 Sept 1877 from the 1939 Census living at Model Lodging House, Otley.

But I've found a couple of passenger lists (see below) which say he was born abt 1883-1885 and his birth place was Rochdale.

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/2322994:8745?ssrc=pt&tid=847648&pid=-2039592365

https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=7488&h=4013868585&ssrc=pt&tid=847648&pid=-2039592365&usePUB=true&_gl=1*16jfdi2*_ga*MTAyNDU3MTM1OS4xNjgwODA2MDQ4*_ga_4QT8FMEX30*NjNjMDIzZDEtYzAyZC00NDYxLWIyOTAtYzJmODRiMTJiNDc2LjcwLjEuMTY4MzE5MzMxOC4xLjAuMA

He was definitely born 1881 or earlier because he's on the 1881 census with parents and siblings.

I was wondering if anyone might have better luck trying to find a birth index/baptism record. I'd like to order his birth certificate if possible.

Thanks

Galway / Look up request - Bryan Noon / Margaret Jordan marriage
« on: Thursday 20 April 23 17:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to find a marriage record for my 4GGPs Bryan Noon and Margaret Jordan. They had 2 children born in Ireland between 1845-1851 (Bridget and Mary), so I imagine they married around 1845 or earlier. I can't find a parish register entry for the marriage so wondered if someone else might have better luck than me.

I believe Bryan was born around 1821 going by his age on England Census records from 1861 onwards. But his death certificate says he was 59yo in 1894.
And I believe Margaret was born around 1823, again going by her age on the census records.

Spelling variations from other documentation I have:
- Bryan/Brian/Brun
- Noon/Noone/Newn
- Jordan/Shurdon

Please let me know if I need to provide any further info. Thank you :)

Ireland / Lookup Request - Mary Noon, Ireland
« on: Sunday 04 April 21 15:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I'm desperately trying to find a birth or baptism record for my 3rd GGM - Mary Noon (Noone/Newn)

I know her parents Bryan (Bryan/Brun/Bryne) Noone and Margaret Jordan were from Ireland.
The family moved to England before 1954 but from the England Census records, Mary is always listed as being born in Ireland.

I've tried to find baptism records but I've had no luck. I'm not sure exactly where in Ireland she was born - though she did marry someone who came from Galway.

I believe Mary was born around 1849-1851 according to the dates on the census records and she married in 1867 (mc lists her as being 18yrs old).

She had a sister called Bridget, also born in Ireland around 1845 but I can't find a baptism for her either.

Would anyone please be able to help with the search?

Thank you!

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Bernard Noon
« on: Sunday 03 January 21 15:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, happy new year!

I’m wondering if anyone can help me? I’m trying to find out more about Bernard Noone - found in this 1891 census

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/22501092?h=004fdb

I believe his mother is my 3rd GGM - she was born as Mary Noon about 1849 in Ireland, and married John Mullins in Warrington in 1867. They had a daughter called Sarah who was born 1872 in Newcastle under Lyme, and also a son called John (my 2x GGF) born 1870 in Warrington.

John Mullins Snr seems to disappear after 1861 (can’t find him on any census records) - on the 1891 census Mary is listed as a widow, and so maybe went back to using her maiden name for some reason.

I have searched for a birth record for Bernard Noone in both Warrington and Newcastle under Lyme. I can’t find anything that looks remotely accurate as evidence. I have tried searching using both his fathers surname and his mother’s maiden name.

I do have the mother Mary and 2 children living with Bryan and Margaret Noon (her parents) on the 1881 census in Warrington. Mary is using her married name (Mullins), she is listed as a widow again and is with her 2 children Sarah Mullins and John Mullins.

Part of me wonders if Bernard and John Jnr are the same people, both born in the same place and around the same time. Maybe for some reason he changed his name for a short period. I have John Mullins Jnr birth cert - he didn't have a middle name.

If anyone has time would they be willing to see if they can find any further evidence of the relationship please?

Thanks :)

Lancashire / 1878 Kirkdale Gaol Records
« on: Wednesday 01 July 20 23:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me.

I've just received the birth certificate for my 2x great grandmother and it says that she was born in Kirkdale Gaol. I didn't know this until now so I'm trying to find out more information about how/why this came about.

The certificate says her mothers residence was also Kirkdale Gaol.

I can't find any prison records or anything which might give us a clue as to the story.

My 2xGGM was called Martha Cotton, she was born 2nd Feb 1878 in Kirkdale Gaol.
Her mother was Martha Cotton (mmn Hoyles). She was born 1843 in Warrington.

I've done a search of the forum already, and tried the black sheep archive / FindMyPast / Ancestry and other sites, but no luck so far.

I'd really love to find out what happened. Can anyone help or point me in a direction to find the info?

Thanks!

Ireland / Lookup Request: Thomas and Sabina Mullin
« on: Wednesday 20 November 19 10:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me with a search please?

I've been researching my maternal Nanna's family line since the beginning of the year and it's been a difficult process as I wasn't able to find or verify much information on her fathers side. My G.GD didn't have a good relationship with his Dad and nobody in the family seems to know much about the history. So I've been trying really hard to find out as much as I can to solve the mysteries.

I made a bit of a break through last month which I was so excited about, but now I'm stuck again!!

This is where I'm at with this line of the family tree...

Irene Mullins (my Nanna)
b. 1930 Warrington, Cheshire
d. 2019 Warrington, Cheshire
|
Joseph Mullins (my G.GD)
b. 1903 Warrington, Cheshire
d. 1984 Warrington, Cheshire
|
John Mullins (my 2x G.GD)
b. 1870 Warrington, Cheshire
d. 1951 St. Helens, Cheshire
|
John Mullins (my 3x G.GD)
b. 1837  Galway, Ireland
d. unknown
|
Thomas Mullins (my 4x G.GD)
b. abt 1811 Ireland
d. 1878 Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire (?)

My brick wall is to do with my 4x G.GD Thomas Mullins (alt. spellings Mullin, Mullen, Mullings). I'd really like to find out who my 5x G.GParents are and whether there are any siblings etc

Thomas was married to Sabina - I know this from some census records I have:
1851 England Census - https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=8860&h=8265297&ssrc=pt&tid=163816637&pid=232139021856&usePUB=true
1861 England Census - https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=8767&h=19908870&ssrc=pt&tid=163816637&pid=232139021856&usePUB=true
1871 England Census - https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=7619&h=6648409&ssrc=pt&tid=163816637&pid=232139021856&usePUB=true

From these records, I know Thomas and Sabina were born in Ireland and their approx. birth years.
I know they had 7 children - John, Thomas, Mary, Sally, Sarah, Margaret and Daniel.
(I do believe I have the correct census records as the address matches that of a birth certificate I have for my 2x G.GD's sister born in 1872 in Newcastle under Lyme)

I did a search on rootsireland.com - for these children with parents named Thomas and Sabina.
I found baptism records for John, Thomas and Mary - born in Galway, Ireland. (John being my 3x G.GD) - there were no other possible baptism records, and interestingly the mothers name was given as Sabina Murray.

So I searched on roostireland again for any marriage records for a Thomas and Sabina. I had originally thought Sabina's maiden name could be Quinn (based off Ancestry hints/possible records) ....and I found a marriage record for Thomas to Sabina Quinn...but if this was the correct marriage then they would have had their first 3 children born out of wedlock and I doubt they'd have been able to be baptised in this case.
There was only one other marriage record for Thomas marrying Sabina Murray in 1836 Galway, Ireland. I therefore believe this is the correct marriage record, and matches the baptism records I've found.
Sadly the marriage record doesn't give me any fathers names so I'm stuck on following this line further back now and don't know where to go from here.
There are witnesses on the record, but I don't know if these are siblings, other family members etc.

I've reached out to someone on Ancestry.com who seems to share the same family line on one of their trees, it came up as and Ancestry hint. However they have Sabina's maiden name as Quinn, where as I am certain it should be Murray. I've asked if they'd be able to share the research but not had much luck. On their tree they have Thomas Mullins with a baptism record from 1810, Kilkenny Ireland - https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/61039/05027_04_0048/4511618 - which gives fathers name as James Mullin. But I don't know if this is the correct info, and it actually looks like it says wife "Judy O'flan..."

Where do I go with my research now? There has to be more siblings, other family members etc surely. Would anyone be willing to dissect my long message and help with a lookup?

Thanks so much in advance :)

Lancashire Lookup Requests / John Mullins (Mullin)
« on: Saturday 27 April 19 15:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I’m researching my 3rd Great Grandad and struggling as I don’t know a lot of info about him to start with.

This is what I do know

JOHN MULLINS (S.P.? Mullin/Mullen?)

Born abt. 1840 - location could be Warrington but not sure. I’m still to find the birth record. He may have been born in Ireland.

Married July 1867 to Mary Noon - GRO 8c 211 - Warrington

They had a son called John Mullins (1870-1951) - born in warrington

Also a daughter called Sarah b. 1872 - Newcastle under Lyme

I have his sons marriage certificate which gives an address of 53 Foundry Street, Warrington - which ties in with the address on the 1881 Census (where Mary is listed as a Widow, and is living with her parents - Brian & Margaret Noon- and her children)

I can’t find any other census info for John Mullins Snr, nor do I know the names of his parents.

Could anyone help with this at all?

I have ordered the marriage cert. for John / Mary Noon today to see if that helps shed any light.

I’ve also ordered the birth certificate for John Mullins Jnr.
