Tyrone / Books by Michael McCaughey
« on: Wednesday 06 December 23 01:47 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where there are copies of Around Trillick Way or Come Listen Awhile by Michael McCaughey?  They seem to be out of print and hard to find. He details life in and around Trillick, Tyrone and it is of interest to my research.

Thanks

Does anyone know how to find an index of all cases in the court of chancery for New York City.  And if that exists, the best way to pull them?  I’ve had some success in the past with the state archives but I can’t recall how I found a particular case.

Tyrone / McSorley's from Kilskeery
« on: Thursday 28 July 22 22:08 BST (UK)  »
I've traced a large number of McSorley family members back to the late 18th century / early 19th century and they were largely centered around Kilskeery, Trillick, Moneygar etc.  A number of similar trees exist on Ancestry showing a branch of McSorley's descending from Thomas McSorley and Mary Bridget Sweeney.  A lot of these trees show their children as William (1790), Francis (1791), John (1795), Michael (1796), James (1797), Owen (1800), Terence (1801), and Hugh (1805).

To be honest, I can't tie any of this back.  The only names I have touched on with my research are Owen Mansfield McSorley (1800) and Hugh McSorley (1805) and nothing gives their parents names.  In fact, based on my research I would be doubtful Thomas was the father's name.  Does anyone have similar research that can corroborate?  My suspicion is that someone threw some similar names together and others blindly repeated.

Would love to know where this family info originated as it seems to be beyond my grip with internet sleuthing.

United States of America / New York Herald Archives 1899 to 1920
« on: Wednesday 22 June 22 02:32 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where I can find archives for the New York Herald from the years 1899 to about 1920?  Genealogybank has a great set with lots of obituaries but the collection seems to end around 1898.  Newspapers.com has big gaps in their collection. I feel like the first few decades of the 20th century would continue with the obituaries but I can’t find an archive anywhere.

United States of America / Early New York Legal Proceedings Transcripts
« on: Thursday 15 July 21 20:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I am wondering if there is a source out there that has written transcripts of New York legal proceedings testimony.  I came across the will of one of my ancestors where an executor battle broke out.  It included many pages of testimony where other relations were revealed.  I know for a fact these same relations were involved in other cases in 1830's to 1850's New York as I have read the case summaries.  I'd like to be able to read transcripts of the testimony to see what else is revealed but I can't find any online.  Perhaps it is the way I am searching on Google.  Does anyone know where to obtain such docs?

FYI, my relatives were McSorleys/Wilsons from pre 1850 New York City.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tyrone / Looking For Help Locating a Town in Tyrone
« on: Saturday 16 January 21 00:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I recently found my ancestor, Thomas McSorley, in the New York Emigrant Savings bank books.  Those books listed family details to help identify customers.  Thomas gave his place of birth as “Curlough, Derrigan, Dromore parish, Tyrone.”  I have tried looking for that townland but am getting results for Aghaloo parish.  Derrigan doesn’t come back at all.  I know transcription errors may be a factor.

Can anyone help me locate his hometown?  He was born c. 1795 so perhaps names have changed.

Thanks!
Rick

Ireland / Ordering Ancestors Wills - Ireland
« on: Monday 23 March 20 23:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hey All,

Has anyone ever ordered an ancestors will from the national archives?  Is it worth doing?  Is there any more info in them then the summary in the probate books?  I have a number of ancestors with wills on record and am wondering if I should pursue the detailed version.

Would like to hear any others personal experiences.

Thanks!
RB
