Family History Beginners Board / Ann Drinkwell
« on: Monday 07 November 22 21:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I've reached a complete brick wall with this ancestor. On Lan-Opc, I can find a marriage to a Thomas Rawsthorne on 28 Apr 1812 at St Michael, Whitewell, Lancashire, England but no parents' names are provided. They have a daughter, Ann, on 2 Sep 1812.

I've looked on Lan-Opc for a birth for Ann Drinkwell (and searched on permutations like Drinkel) and can't really find anything for an Ann that would fit for someone having a child in 1812.

[Edit]

There are a few other Ann Drinkalls who get married in 1894 and 1895. They have different fathers and I have no idea if they are the same person as Ann Drinkwell.

There is an Anne Drinkell baptised on 2 Aug 1767 at Christ Church, Over Wyresdale, Lancashire, England. Daughter of Thomas Drinkell & Agnes. But she would be 45 at the time Ann Rawsthorne was born so possible but unlikely?

Daughter of Thomas Drinkall & Ann. But she would be 48 at the time Ann Rawsthorne was born so seems unlikely.

The name Rawsthorne also has multiple spellings and variations so struggling to make much progress with this couple.

Hello

I've found a lot of Irish crew lists and shipping agreements showing some of my ancestors working on these boats in the 1860s and 1870s. Does anyone know where I could find more information about them and what they'd actually look like?

I've put 'steamers' in the title but I'm not 100% sure if that's what they were.

Thanks

Louth / John Crawley - possibly from the Dundalk area.
« on: Monday 05 April 21 18:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I've reached a brick wall on this one and wondered if anyone could suggest anything to help.

What I have so far. John Crawley (Crowley) was married to Julia Morgan in April 1891 in Liverpool. They're both on the 1891 census and he's 29 on that. They get married in April 1891 shortly after the census and the marriage certificate says his father was Thomas, deceased and was a farmer. John is 29 on this so born in approx 1862 and he's listed as a mariner.

1901 census says he's 36 (so born approx 1865), a dock labourer and born in Ireland (I think Dundalk but not 100% - Julia is from Louth).

I think he dies in Jan 1904 (buried on 28 Jan 1904 and stated as 40 then so born 1864/5. He's dead by the 1911 census). Julia has a baby on 29 Jan 1904 as well who is also called John - this confused me for a while when looking and beggar's belief when I actually think about it.

I've looked on the Irish genealogy site and can only see two John Crawleys (various spellings) with fathers called Thomas - one in Kilrush and one in Clonakilty, which don't seem like the right areas to me. If he was born before 1865, I don't think he'll be listed here anyway.

So, I'm now stuck. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone else?

Thanks

Hi

I have lots of ancestors in Lancashire and have wondered about whether they were Catholic families. There seem to be a lot called Francis in the 18th century and I wondered if this name was much used by non-Catholics. Am I overthinking?

Lancashire / Georgiana Thompson b.1820 in Liverpool
« on: Sunday 07 June 20 18:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm really struggling to find anything more on Georgiana Thompson in Liverpool. From Ancestry, I've found a marriage to James Holmes in Liverpool on 21 March 1842 at St Peter's. He is listed as a shoemaker and his father is Francis Holmes, a stone mason. James is a widower and 'full' age.

Georgiana doesn't give a name for her father and is listed as a minor and a spinster. Witnesses are Joseph Taylor and Isabella Taylor.

I also think I've found them in the 1851 census. But she's now called Hannah and born in 1820. James was born in 1810in Newburgh, Lancs. In fact, I found this before I found the marriage so presume (?) Hannah is a short name for Georgiana. But, I can't find them again in any later census. There's a child, James Holmes, b.1850. I was wondering if Georgiana/Hannah died in childbirth but I can't seem to find a death that fits. Or a later census if she didn't die.

I'd really appreciate any help if I've missed something. Thanks

The Common Room / GRO orders for PDFs. Anyone received any recently?
« on: Tuesday 12 May 20 20:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I realise I probably shouldn't have ordered one in April but I did.  :-[

Anyway, to manage my expectations, has anyone else ordered one since mid-March and received it? I'd just like an idea of timescales.

Thanks

Lancashire / Joseph Septimus Carr - who is he?
« on: Saturday 18 May 19 20:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi

This person appears on a marriage certificate of Thomas Carr (49 and a painter) and Catherine Lambert (47) married in Liverpool in 1890. Catherine's father is listed as William Irvine and she's a widow.

I can find a few Joseph Septimus Irvin(e)s but no JS Carr. It's as though the surnames are mixed up.

Can anyone please help me work out what's going on?

Many thanks
