Census and Resource Discussion / Collecting information for electoral register
« on: Saturday 16 March 24 08:47 GMT (UK)  »
I know women over the age of 30 gained the vote in 1918.
What i am wondering is how was the information collected in order to compile the electoral register back then? As more people were  able to vote in Parliamentary elections did they have to submit their names & addresses every year?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / How do I record on a DNA family tree
« on: Monday 07 August 23 10:07 BST (UK)  »
I have traced a Gt Grandfather back to 1861 when he was 3 years old through marriage cert and census details. His recording of birth place remains consistent.
In the earliest census 1861 he is recorded as a grandchild of the head of the household. I have not found a birth certificate ( have had help previously on here in this but with no luck). I am presuming that he either wasn’t registered or if he was it was under a different name.

What is the best way  I should record him on the tree I am using on Ancestry which is linked to DNA results?
Thank you

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Changing a tree for DNA
« on: Tuesday 01 August 23 12:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi I would to change the tree that I have linked to my DNA results. The one I am now able to add has far more people than my original. I can see where to change the tree but it wants to know who I am - my own name  on the tree is just identified by initials ( as I’m living!) - which it won’t accept. Any ideas how I can get round this ?

The Common Room / Leaving school aged 15
« on: Monday 12 June 23 17:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi I know that there was an Education Act passed in 1944 which raised school leaving age to 15. What I would like to know is when did it come into affect? We’re parents and pupils given any warning and time to prepare?
I’m thinking of my own grandmother who depended on her children bringing in a wage as soon as they could and how she would have coped.

World War One / Royal Flying Corp
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 09:16 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if records for those who were in the RFC during WW1 are available?
I have done some searching and have seen several references to say the records are available on Find My Past. How would I find them on that site?
Thanks

Armed Forces / Naval record - coastguard abbreviations
« on: Tuesday 06 July 21 10:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello  I have a Naval record for  someone who served on various ships over about 15 years and then transferred to the Coastguard service. It is the coastguard references I would appreciate some help with .

The record is from UK Naval Officer & Rating Service 1862 - 1919 ( piece 076 Admiralty Ratings 1869 April - Sept)

His name is William Madden ( baptised Gravesend 1827)
After the list of ships comes the record for coastguard service

29 Nov 1856 Coastguard boatman  .
14 Dec 1859  ........
After that it is just abbreviations which I can’t understand - can anyone help me please?

I’m sorry I haven’t posted the actual record (which I found on Ancestry) but am working on an iPad and unsure how to do all the technicalities for that

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Bradford TV programme
« on: Sunday 30 August 20 09:49 BST (UK)  »
Sometime ago whilst in Bradford I visited Little Horton Green, i found it to be a very atmospheric place. I got chatting to a man who was doing some work on one of the properties and he mentioned that TV programmes had been filmed there. He thought it might be episodes  of Heartbeat or The Royal.
Does anyone remember episodes or any other programmes where Little Horton Green was used as a location?
Thanks for reading.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Art full text at Leeds library
« on: Thursday 27 February 20 19:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi wonder if anyone on here is a member of Leeds library and able to access the Art Full Text resource on line? I believe there are articles on there referring to a John Pullan. If it the John Pullan I am looking for he was a portrait painter working in Leeds around 1837 - 1845.
I only need the title of the article and details of which journal the article is in. I am not a member of the library so cannot access details on line.

Lancashire / Longridge Building society cottages
« on: Tuesday 04 June 19 08:37 BST (UK)  »
I’ve just come across the story of the cottages built in Longridge, which is linked to the first ‘building society’. How enterprising they were. Does anyone know if there is a list of who the original people who set up the scheme were?
