Angus (Forfarshire) / hoping someone can help
« on: Thursday 25 October 07 12:53 BST (UK)  »
You guys have helped me before and I am hoping someone can help shed some light on my 3rd great grandfather James Colly (Cully) as I am totally stumped!
I cannot find anything on him except his marriage certificate of 22nd August 1851 to a Helen Connoly. It states on it he was a labourman and of course this era didnt give parents names or ages. I cant find him on 1851 census and by the 1861 census Helen had remarried a Henry Glen. On this marriage certificate it states Helen was 29 in 1860.
Can someone give me help as to where to try and find my mysterious 3rd g grandfather as i cant even find a death certificate to give me a clue there either.
Where do i go now? please please help me.

Ireland / help in locating a Gethins and McGlone
« on: Tuesday 19 September 06 11:51 BST (UK)  »
i am hoping someone may be able to help me please. i am looking for births of Patrick Gethins (born approx 1838) parents names were Michael Gethins and Mary (i think Cality or something like that, very hard to make out) and Mary McGlone (born approx 1843)  parents names  James McGlone Ann or Catherine McGuire. They moved to Dundee Scotland  sometime prior to the marriage of Patrick & Mary in 1863 in a RC church in Dundee. Both were worked in the jute mills.
if anyone could help me try and shed some light of my 2nd g grandparents it would be greatly appreciated as i am stuck. :'(
thank you

Angus (Forfarshire) / Maggie Robertson
« on: Tuesday 19 September 06 10:28 BST (UK)  »
This might sound really silly to all of you that are quiet conversant with locating ancestors - but i am really stuck with a Maggie Robertson (my grandmother). I was unable to locate her marriage certificate and a kind gentleman looked it up for me at the registry in Edinburgh and gave me my great grandfather and his wife's name. Now my problem is - the information he gave me is "Maggie (yes the name appeared as Maggie on the certificate. Probably why it didn't turn up when you searched) Robertson (jute mill worker) age 21 daughter of John Robertson, (Tailor) and Catherine Brown

on 28th December 1901 in St. Margarets Church, Lochee."
now i still couldnt find it on scotspeople and the REAL problem is that when i found Catherine Brown and John Robertson's marriage certificate 1886 it says he was a widower. Now my calculations say that his first wife is Maggie/Margaret's mum. Now I have spent a lot of money on scotspeople trying to find her BUT there are so many Maggie Robertson's with a dad of John Robertson....... any suggestions as to how i can narrow this search down as to the correct one?
all suggestions i would really appreciate - as I am stuck!
thanks heaps everyone
regards
Jacki

« on: Monday 18 September 06 16:05 BST (UK)  »
I am so sorry to ask for someone to again try and decipher writings... am I the only one that gets really bad certificate copies?  :'( I have tried and tried with this one too... what I do know is the marriage is between a Patrick Gethins and a Mary McGlone ( think) - i have noticed the spelling of the Gethins could be Gettins/Gittens or the Gethins. I cannot make out the 2 mum's names - anyone any idea there?

Aberdeenshire / please help me
« on: Friday 25 August 06 14:32 BST (UK)  »
I am really stuck with my grandmother's real mother and need help desperately... :'(
I have my grandmother's fathers marriage certificate to her step mother but cannot find anything on her real mother nor her birth certificate.
My grandmother's name was Maggie or Margaret Robertson... her father was John Robertson and according to his marriage certificate 1886 in the District of Woodside in the County of Aberdeen was aged 39 and a widower. (he married a Catherine Brown aged 27). I never met my grandmother as I was born in Australia. My half-sister who was born in Scotland said that all she remembers is my grandmother hated her step-mother and ran away to London to become a Magician's assistant.
I do not have a copy of my grandmother's marriage certificate but was given the information that she was born abt 1880 as the information I have she was married in 1901 aged 21 - this being the case Catherine Brown could not have been her mother as she married John Robertson in 1886
I have searched and searched but not knowing the area and nothing about Aberdeen I am lost - can anyone please help me.  ???
thanks heaps
warmest regards
Jacki
