Armed Forces / Marriage during Service
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 21:53 GMT (UK)  »
I am just starting to do my maternal family tree and I have already hit a brick wall! ......

My Great Grandad GEORGE FREDERICK WOOTTON (c1882) married a FLORENCE WOOD between 1900 (earliest) and 1908 - their first child was born in 1908.

However because he was in the army (ESSEX REGIMENT - 56th FOOT) I am finding it difficult to try and trace their marriage!  I need the certificate to try and confirm his fathers name! Apparently George left home at 14 because of his STEP father whose name was never discussed!

Could anyone please help on this - were military marriages different from civil ones so to speak and where could I obtain the information required from.

Thanks in advance

Lancashire / SALFORD ... Where to go for records?
« on: Wednesday 04 October 06 22:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi there  ;D

Ive gone as far as I can for now with regard to my Yorkshire roots so I thought I would start on the SALFORD side of the family now.

I have most certificates but I would like to go to Manchester to possibly get other information e.g  divorce papers (1906+) newspaper articles, Electoral roles etc etc

Could someone direct me where to physically go for Salford info - would it be Manchester Central Library or somewhere in Salford?

Many thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Hit a Brickwall - cant get past 1771
« on: Friday 29 September 06 12:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi there  ;D

Right, Im researcing my ILLINGWORTH family tree and managed to trace back to Jonas Ilingworth born 1771 (his date of birth acording to his age on his army records) and in Wibsey (according to Census records).

My dad and I travelled to Bradford Library and the Archives a few months ago and we had a look on the Wibsey Holy Trinity Parish records but didnt find anything at all on those particular records.

Now according to the census's the "family" were either recorded as living in Bradford, North Bierley, Wibsey,  Horton, Little Horton and Bowling.

Now Id like to go back to Bradford and try and get beyond 1771 and possibly try found out who Jonas's father was (a bonus if I could get further than that) but I dont really know where to start ... could anyone give me any advise please .... would we have to look under all church records for the general areas that the Census's state where they were living in?

I have had a look on the IGI and there is a Jonas christened in Dec 1772 in Bradford - Father Thomas and there is another Jonas christened 1773 but on the same line states Burial Dec 1773 - Father Thomas so obviously the latter isnt my 'Jonas' but how do I prove (if possible) if the first Jonas is relative to my search.

I really dont know what to do now and was wondering how you folks fared in tracing back in the 1700's.

Thanks and sorry for the waffle  :P

Hi there  :D

I have received my Great Grandfathers death certificate from NY and he died in the US Marine Hospital (Borough of Richmond) - he was a merchant seamen .... I have tried to find out some more information about the hospital and I have come across two very different photographs and now I am thinking there might have been two US Marine Hospitals on Staten Island ..... could someone please help me with this, Im getting very confused  ??? but I am desperate to find out which one he was in (perhaps the two different photos are of the same hospital just two different buildings?)

If it helps, he was buried at Ocean View Cemetery.

Ill attach the two photographs

Yorkshire (West Riding) / MISSING PERSON AFTER 1881 CENUS
« on: Tuesday 28 March 06 00:25 BST (UK)  »
HI there  ;D

Well Im researching the family tree and now I am doing siblings to see if I can get more information from others for the immediate family.

Anyway, my Great-Great Grandfather had a brother born c1856 in Wibsey called Henry Illingworth now he must have got married between the 1871-1881 census because on the 1881 census there is a family who live at 23 Wootton Street Bowling and are: -

Henry Illingworth - Head - born 1856 Wibsey
Ruth Illingworth - Wife - born 1855
Harold H Illingworth - Son - Born abt 1880

So if it is 'my' Henry I am presuming he married Ruth (Greenwood) in 1878 and their son was Harold Hastings Illingworth born 1879

However, that is it now with regard to Henry after the 1881 census that I can find no concrete trace of him anywhere!  ???

Now Ruth Illingworth immigrated to America on the 28th April 1885 (on the passenger list it states her as "wife" but theres no sign of Henry) and with her she took her children:-

Harold Illingworth born abt 1879
Percival Illingworth born abt 1880 - now where is he on the 1881 Census? I have found a Percival Bentinck Illingworth born 1880 in Bradford - but even this long winded fella I cannot find on the census  :o
Archibald Illingworth born abt 1882 - found an Archibald Greenwood Illingworth born in Bradford in 1882 - the Greenwood goes with Ruth's maiden name - unless I am being very presumptious about this Illingworth/Greenwood marriage ;)
Ernest Illingworth born abt 1884

So thats it .... after this New York passenger list I can find no further trace of Ruth, but I have found a Harold Hastings, Percival Bentinck, Archie Greenwood and Ernest all on records in Windham Vermont.

PLEASE PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP WITH HENRY AND RUTH PLEASE? Perhaps I just cannot see the wood for the trees!  :P

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.  ;D
