Lanarkshire / Fresh eyes needed
« on: Saturday 08 August 15 13:22 BST (UK)  »
Having had very helpful advice from Rootchatters when I started researching my family tree, I am now asking for help or advice re a few brick walls I have come up against.

James Whitby born 1845 in Sorbie, Wigtownshire to parents Thomas Whitby and Elizabeth McCartney.  Unable to find any further information.

Elizabeth Whitby (James's sister) born 1857, Sorbie, m James Duncan in Glasgow in 1884.  Cannot find any further information.

John McGee, born 1886 to Thomas McGee and Mary Colvin.  John and his two siblings were orphaned as young children and went to live with their maternal grandmother, Catherine Colvin, in Cambusnethan.   They are all on the 1901 census but on the 1911 census John is missing.  I can find no trace of him and it may be that he emigrated but with his name being so common and the variations in the spelling of his surname, I have been unable to find him.

I hope someone can help me break down these brick walls!

Cavan / Help with Irish Research
« on: Monday 22 June 15 11:12 BST (UK)  »
My Great Great Grandfather, John Colvin (1827-1885) married Catherine O'Neill in Lanark, Scotland in June 1852.    They resided in Cambusnethan.   John came from Co Cavan and Elizabeth from Co. Monaghan.   I have been able to trace them from their marriage to the present day.   Now I want to try to get back to his Irish Roots and understand this can be a pretty difficult task so am looking for some help in just where to start.   All I know is that on John's death certificate his father is shown as John Colvin, Farmer, Co. Cavan.

Thank you for reading this and for any help or advice you be able to give.

Dublin / Help with Irish research needed
« on: Thursday 06 August 09 15:59 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the Irish side of my mother's family and not sure how to go about getting information as I understand many records were destroyed.
The information  I have is :-

Grandmother, Mary Fitzpatrick, was born in Ayrfield on 8 November 1881 and baptized at the Church of St Peter & Paul, Bardoyle.  Her parents were Rose (Connolly) and Christopher Fitzpatrick.   She married on 17 July 1905 at the RC Chapel of St Brendan, Coolock.  Her residence is given as Raheny.   On marriage to a Scotsman, she moved to Scotland and remained there until her death in 1957.

From the 1911 Census I have been able to ascertain that her mother and two brothers, John and James, still lived in Raheny and her mother is shown as Head of Household.   No mention is made of her husband though it shows she is married.   I have found a Christopher Fitzpatrick, servant, at an address in Howth and this may well be him as on Mary's marriage certificate he is shown as a gardener.

I know that Rose died  in March 1920, aged 78, Residence Raheny and status married

John died on 19 February 1932 aged 51, unmarried.

James died on 12 November 1952 aged 65, unmarried.

All are interred at Kilbarrack Burial Ground.   They are unable to help with the death/burial of Christopher.

How do I go about getting birth/death certificates for the Dublin area?  Would it be better contacting a church in the area and which church would they have attended in the Raheny area?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Lanarkshire / Tying up loose ends

I have been researching my maternal ancestors since they arrived in Cambusnethan from Ireland in the 1880s and have more or less finished but before I embark on the near impossible task of tracing their Irish roots, I need to find the death of the illusive John McG(h)ee.   He was born to Thomas McGee and Mary Colvin, the middle of three children.   His parents died when he was about three years of age and he went to live with his maternal grandmother.   I have him on the 1901 census but can find no trace of him after that date.   Has anyone any ideas?
Also, his grandparents had six children born 1854, 1855, 1857,  1858, 1867 and 1870. There is a big gap between the first four and the last two.  Does anyone know how I can find out if there were children born between 1958 and 1967, who perhaps died in infancy?

« on: Saturday 21 June 08 18:46 BST (UK)  »
i have written and e-mailed Cambusnethan Cemetery for info on a Lair Certificate I have in my possession but after months they have still not replied.  Can anyone help with information on Lair No. 520 Section C (28 Aug 1860 reg), purchased 18 February 1886 by my great grandfather Terence Colvin?  His parents were John and Catherine and his wife was Mary.   I know Terence had one son James, my grandfather, but no knowledge of any other children or siblings.

Dublin / Kilbarrack Burial Ground
« on: Tuesday 18 September 07 19:48 BST (UK)  »
Still trying to find any information on my grandmother's (Mary Fitzpatrick) family  She was born in 1881 and baptised in the Church of St Peter & Paul, Baldoyle. She was married in St Brendon's RC Church, Coolock on 17 July 1905 and moved to Scotland.  I know she had one brother, James (Jimmy), and that her father was Christopher and her mother Rose.   I have now across two receipts from The Kilbarrack Burial Ground, County Dublin, both purchased by James Fitzpatrick of Raheny (my grandmother's brother?).   One is dated 28 March 1920 but the lair no and name of the deceased are illegible.   The other is dated 22 February 1932 for the internment of John Fitzpatrick, lair no E5416.  Could he have been another brother?
Is this burial ground still in existence and is there a procedure for finding out information on the above internments?
Any help would be appreciated.

Fife / Hutton/Beveridge
« on: Sunday 26 March 06 20:33 BST (UK)  »
My late mother-in-law, Euphemia Hutton Beveridge Morgan, was born in Carnock in 1916.   Her mother was Isabella Hutton so it is feasible that her grandmother was Euphemia Beveridge. probably born mid 1800s.  Has anyone come across this name?

Trying to trace information on my grandmother's family.   Her name was Mary Fitzpatrick and she was born at Ayrfield, Balgriffin, Co Dublin on 8.11.1881 and married on 17.7.1905 in Coolock, Co.Dublin.   Particular interest in her parents and if she had any siblings.
Many thanks
