I have an obituary notice in Newcastle Evening Chronicle March 1895 for John King Crowther which refers to him being the nephew of the late Dr Crowther of Edinburgh.  I would guess that Dr Crowther lived from the early 1800's to, say 1880'ish, apparently practicing in medicine in Edinburgh.  Has anyone any idea where I could start to look for members of the medical profession in the mid to late 1800's?

Armed Forces / Tattoo meaning - WHTST?
« on: Saturday 09 January 10 22:42 GMT (UK)  »
My GGrandfather was John George Thompson born 1870 in Gateshead, England.  He joined the army 1891 and was a Gunner in the East Durham Light Infantry serving over 7 years in Bombay.  On his army discharge papers Nov 1898 it states that he had tattooed on his left forearm "WHTSTMA Thompson".  His Mother was Mary Ann Thompson (nee Kennedy) so I presume the M A Thompson at the end of the Tattoo refers to his Mother.  Can anybody shed any light on the meaning of the rest of the Tattoo WHTST?

Copy of the relevant part of the doc is attached.

United States of America / James Robert Crothers born South Carolina abt 1801
« on: Monday 22 June 09 23:00 BST (UK)  »
According to 1861 England census, my GGGGrandfather Robert Crothers was born about 1801 in South Carolina to British Parents.  From other sources, I have discovered his full name was probably James Robert C Crothers.  After his birth in South Carolina, the next time I can place him is abt 1826 when his son John King Crothers was born in Ireland, so he appears to have travelled to Ireland between 1801 and 1826.  Thereafter he went to Scotland abt 1827 and then to Newcastle upon Tyne, England where he stayed until he died in 1862.  I would be greatful for any help in finding any record of his birth in South Carolina or any reference to him in any census in South Carolina.

Northumberland / Anyone know where records for Newcastle gaol are?
« on: Sunday 10 May 09 22:34 BST (UK)  »
My GGGGrandfather Robert Crothers was apparently in Newcastle gaol May 1850 for insolvency (Ref London Gazette).  Does anyone know if there are records for Newcastle gaol giving length of sentence, release date etc?  Was it common practice to gaol people for insolvency in those days?

thanks

My GGGGrandfather Robert Crothers/Crowther was born in South Carolina about 1801 to British Parents.  His son John King Crothers was born in Ireland in abt 1826.  Therefore Robert appears to have travelled from South Carolina to Ireland somewhere between 1801 and 1826.  Has anyone any idea where there may be a record of this journey?  Were passports required or some other emmigration paperwork?

United States of America / Robert Crothers Born South Carolina abt 1801
« on: Tuesday 10 March 09 20:20 GMT (UK)  »
My GGGGrandfather Robert Crothers/Crowther is in 1861 census in England and he said he was born in South Carolina to British parents.  Has anybody any idea how to go about finding any more information about his birth, parents or when he returned to UK.  His daughter Susannah Crothers was born abt 1827 in Scotland so he was probably back here then.
