The Common Room / Adoption
« on: Saturday 13 April 24 08:43 BST (UK)  »
I've been asked ,by a friend to look into her paternal birth grandmother.
Her father was a adopted very soon after birth . He has since died and he didn't know anything about his birth family.
So, the birth certificate came yesterday , and had the usual on it ,a part from three written numbers right of the very last column. Underneath each written number is the initials of the registrar.
After Column 10. Its written as follows.
Eleven.
Initial of registrar.
Twelve.
Initial of registrar.
Thirteen.
Initial of registrar....
I'm just hoping it's not the mother's possible age .
The adopted child was born 17th Nov 1950 and registered 21st Nov . He was registered by the mother ,but it seemed all so rushed.
The birth was at St George's hospital,London,  and the address his mother gave as residence was 10 gladstone terrace, battersea.
She was Janet may brooker . No clues as to where she was originally from either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. 🙏

The Common Room / Adoption
« on: Friday 29 March 24 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
I ordered a birth certificate for someone who was born in 1950 . He is deceased, and adopted.
His daughter is a friend of mine and she told me her father's original birth name and date of birth.
I found his birth certificate and ordered it, only for the GRO to send me a message saying they can't send me a copy.
Is this standard practice ,if a child was officially adopted ?
Many thanks .

Hi .
I'm looking into the death of alfred farthing born about 1868 Suffolk.
Its stated in the culford school records that he died 7 June 1878 age 10 and was drowned.  Their words .
On the 8th june the school room was required to hold the inquest in,the school was closed for the day .
It looks like he was buried 10th june as the school duties ended at 4.15 on account of Alfred's funeral.
Now the only death that I can find in the culford area for alfred aged 10 is in thingoe Suffolk. But its dated September q . But his funeral was 10 June.

Mmn brazier.
Died 1990 in with the name elphick in gravesend district
Married in both names of elphick and brazier. Its worded as elphick or brazier.
Married rose fletcher dartford July 1959 5b 1021.
For some reason he's going between brazier and elphick so you would think his father was an elphick but I'm having a problem proving this.
I thought I'd get a digital copy of her birth certificate but they haven't copied that year. I know I can buy a papers copy but just thought I'd ask on here first.
Thank you for any help .

The Common Room / Harold Edwin elphick
« on: Tuesday 23 January 24 10:16 GMT (UK)  »
Morning everyone.
I'm having a mare in finding a copy of a will for harold Edwin elphick.
He was born 14 June 1894 Westham Sussex to William elphick and Emma Russell.
September quarter 1894

He died 6 dec 1983 aged 89.

His probate was the 17 Feb 1984.
I've tried to access his will on the government site as usual and nothing.
I've tried to buy a digital copy of his death certificate but they don't have years between 1957-1984 .
He didn't marry or have children.
He was in ww1 and his medals have somehow ended up being sold in Australia.  I know a lot of elphicks went to Australia and wondered if a relative of his did also. He had quite a few siblings and when his father died in 1943 they are all there . Well the  living ones were lol.
The person that sold the medals had the surname Bennett.
The surname elphick is in my ancestry and know a reasonable amount about them but this one is proving to be a bit of an enigma.
Any help would be so appreciated.
Thank you all.

The Common Room / Thomas elphick
« on: Sunday 31 December 23 15:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all. I'm looking for the name of the ship that took a certain Sussex family to America after 1848 and before 1855.
Thomas elphick from buxted, sussex was born 1801 to John elphick and Mary seaman.
He married is first wife Ann Hartfield in 1824 and had children eleanor 1825 followed her Elizabeth Ann 1828 buxted,Sussex.
His second wife was Hester Davis in dec1833. She was a widow . They had children George 1834, William 1837,Henry 1838 ,Thomas 1840 and Mary Ann 1847. I think there's a John also .
There was a lot of controversy surrounding Thomas born1801 in regards to him being accused of murdering his mother and with  his second wife his illegitimate grandson in 1848 and was surprisingly acquitted for both.
Shortly afterwards the family fled to America and I have found them on various censuses from 1855 there .
I have searched high and low for their passage out and the name of the ship they went to America on but I'm not having any luck with the resources I have .
Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you .
