Somerset / Grandfield's of Somerset question
« on: Tuesday 25 August 20 13:15 BST (UK)  »
I have been recently researching my Grandfield ancestors from Somerset. My direct line was James Grandfield 1787-1870, a thatcher by trade from Holford, Somerset who married Mary Marquis 1787-1860. My direct line is from their son Hugh Grandfield born in Bicknoller, who became a cheese dealer. His sibling was called Ann born 1818. There is a baptism record of Ann Granfield born to James and Mary Grandfield in Bicknoller.  Following many other family trees I had her married to Stephen Hockey from Glastonbury with the family emigrating to New Zealand in 1857. It was only when I looked closer at their marriage banns did I see that it said her father was Henry, a trunk maker. The only Henry Grandfield I could find who was a trunk maker from Glastonbury is in an 1841 census. He was married to Elizabeth Grandfield with three children. Ann was not shown on this census. I can find no other evidence of who this Henry Grandfield was or his daughter Ann from Glastonbury. It doesn't tie in with my relations on my tree at all. However, even more confusing is that I have a DNA match to someone in NZ who is a descendant of Stephen Hockey/Ann Grandfield who emigrated there.
Has anyone any ideas as I am totally confused?
Thanks so much for any help.

Gloucestershire / The siblings and parents of George Burchill 1826 Mangotsfield - miner
« on: Thursday 26 September 19 07:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I wonder if anyone can help. George Burchill was my 3 great grandfather. Facts I have researched show he was born circa 1826 in Mangotsfield and his father was called Charles and he was a miner. He married Fanny Sheppard (29 Jun 1845. Died 1847) and then later Harriet Holbrook 13 Nov 1848. My great great grandmother was their daughter Ann born 1853. I believe he died in a Wakefield Colliery accident as have the death certificate 21 Feb 1867. He had travelled up there from Bristol for work the week before he died, according to the coroner's report. Fits in with timeline ( Harriet is a widow by the 1871 census). Also a witness to the accident was his nephew Joseph 'Charles' Garland, his wife's sister Ann's son. On other family trees on Ancestry he appears as having 6 siblings some of which ended up in Frackville, Schuylkill County. I went along with this until I looked more closely at the USA censuses. I found a George living next door to Morris Burchill and family and also to Ann Roberts married to Charles Burchill (all from England). However this George Burchill was married to Sarah and with children William and John. The age is the same as my George Burchill. As the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses all show George as a neighbour, it means something is wrong! Any clues as to who my George Burchill's family could be and who the other George is (also a miner), would be gratefully appreciated before I delete 6 siblings and all of their family branches from my tree!!
Thank you
