Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Ada Isabella and Henry Briscoe Willis

Hi,

Ada Isabella Wiilis was born on Alderney on 19th November 1830, of John and Mary Frances Willis.  She never married, but had a son, Henry Briscoe Willis on Alderney 31st March 1862.  The father was listed as Henry Briscoe Captain RA.  There would have been garrison troops on the island at this time. She died in 1915 in Alderney.

I have  found a Henry Briscoe Gunner RM Artillery, who pops up in the UK 1861 Census for Portsea Portsmouth.  I also found through an auction house site a Captain Henry William Briscoe RA of around 1856.  I am trying to work out if these are one and the same Henry Briscoe.

Europe / Willis and Buhot Alderney and Cherbourg

Hi,

1.  Mary Elizabeth Willis born on Alderney in 1856 married Edouard Armand Theodulé Buhot, in St. Anne’s Church on 23rd April 1878.  Edouard, a shipping manager or merchant from Cherbourg, was the son of François Charles Buhot.  I believe Mary went to live with her husband and his family in Cherbourg but know nothing more.

2.  Her father Alfred Osborn Willis, who owned the butchers in Alderney, sold up and moved to Cherbourg for his health (nearby hospital).  I believe he lived with the Buhots.  Alfred died in Cherbourg after a long painful illness 1889 but I cannot find out the cause of death.

Any information about this or how to find records from Cherbourg (I don't speak French) would be appreciated.
