Europe / Looking for the wedding and death record of Erhard Ortwein
« on: Friday 28 October 22 18:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi there. Sorry, I am just looking for two records regarding a man named Erhard Ortwein who lived from 1627 to 1682 in Wurttemberg. An online tree I have found describes him as mayor and court relative in Kirchberg, and Stiftspfleger/church custodian in Backnang, a nearby town. I'd like to confirm that, and from what I've seen in Wurttemberg church records they tend to add a bit of biographical information about the person, and I wondered if anyone would be able to tell me what's on his May 28, 1650 marriage record to Barbarba Schmalzrieder, or his death on March 13, 1682, both in the village of Kirchberg an der Murr.

I really appreciate it.

The Common Room / Would a death record use a woman's maiden name?
« on: Tuesday 18 October 22 04:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello. Specifically asking about Ireland in the 1890s.
When a married woman died and it was recorded in civil records, would they record her by her birth/maiden name? Or upon marrying would a woman be known only by her married name on official documents, including on her death certificate?

Thank you.

Hello everyone. Not quite able to make out this word at the top of the page. Not sure if it is related to the first marriage on the top of the page, which seems to have something blotted out as well under the town name (Burgstall).

Thank you for having a look.

Cavan / Are baptisms for Cavan digitized anywhere?
« on: Thursday 29 September 22 21:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone. I am looking for a baptism for a woman named Fanny McVeity/McVitty, Catholic, died in 1892, and according to her death record, she was born in 1836. She had a child baptized at Staghall/Drumlane, so I assume that would be the parish she was born in.

I have found the Drumlane parish register online:
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0831
But the writing is a bit hard for my eyes to make out, and I wondered if there were possibly any site with Irish, specifically Cavan, baptisms digitized/with a search function.

Thanks a lot.

Devon / Various Edward Fords from near Combeinteignhead
« on: Friday 16 September 22 01:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello. Sorry, I was on here before about a year ago, looking for information about the Hockmore-Prestwood separation case in 1698. I had lost my password to my old account, hence using this new one.

I am trying to identify a man named Edward Ford who is mentioned in the case. He is the potential father of the last child of Mary Prestwood/Hockmore, wife of William Hockmore Esq. of Buckland-Baron, in Devon.

A witness at the separation court case, on January 10, 1699, said this Edward Ford died "around 9 months earlier." So that would be around April 1698. They also said that he lived "about 8 miles from Buckland-Baron."

I have so far found two Edward Fords who died in 1698. One died on January the 6th, in Sigford, in the parish of Ilsington. Sigford is about 9 miles from the parish of Combeinteignhead, where Buckland-Baron was located. I can't find where exactly the estate of BB was in the parish, but perhaps if it was closer to the edge it might have been give or take 8 miles.

The problem is, this Edward died in January of 1698. Given that the statement about 9 months was from a witness a year after the event, maybe they were mistaken? And this is the best candidate?

The other Edward Ford died in Ashburton, and that is all I know. I don't know when in 1698, the parish registers are too fragmented for Ashburton at that time. Ashburton is about 10.7 miles away.

There is a third Edward Ford, from Ilsington, Devonshire. He was close to Mary Prestwood's age. He was baptized in 1671. I don't know how old the Edward who died in Sigford and the Edward who died in Ashburton were. All I know about this Edward is he was baptized in December 12, 1671, son of Thomas Ford, gent in Ilsingon, and he matriculated at the University of Exeter 1689.

So of the three Edward Fords I have found, there is one who lived and died not far from Buckland Baron, but died about three months earlier than the witness at the separation trial stated. Another who died in Ashburton, who I do not know anything about other than his death year, and a third who was from the same are and about the same age and social standing as Mary Prestwood.

Do you think it's likely the witness statement about "9 months earlier" was inaccurate? Is there anywhere I might be able to find more information about the Edward who was born in 1671? I haven't been able to find anything but his mention in the Visitation for the Ford family. And it seems to be about impossible to find anything on the Edward who died in Ashburton in 1698.

Thanks a lot for reading.

Devon Lookup Requests / Two Edward Fords, died 1698 in Devon
« on: Wednesday 14 September 22 06:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello, everyone. I am trying to identify an Edward Ford who is supposed to have died sometime in early to mid-1698 in Devon. I managed to find this document:
https://mha.mun.ca/mha/holdings/keith/pdf/ford/Ford%20-%20F%20-%20163%20-%20Edward.pdf

It mentions the will of Edward Ford from 1698, from Ashburton, though it doesn't say whether the will was proved that year, or if it was simply written then. The other is for an Edward Ford who died in Ilsington, from Sigford, "1697/98" which I understand means he must have been buried prior to March 25th. Unfortunately, this document doesn't say when exactly, only the year. Unless I've been doing it wrong, the Ilsington parish records that are on FamilySearch turned nothing up. Would really appreciate it if anyone has access to these records could let me know A. if the Edward in Ashford died in 1698 or if he only wrote his will then, and B. the exact date of the burial of the Edward Ford who died in Ilsington.

Thank ya kindly for taking the time to read.

The Common Room / Can someone please help with William Leo Colligan?
« on: Monday 27 April 20 17:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone. I made this thread over in the Kildare subforum with no luck, but then I realized, the question isn't really specific to County Kildare, since more people are probably browsing here in the general forum, hence maybe the lack of responses in the Kildare one.

My grandmother's great-grandmother was named Mary Colgan/Colligan, from Clane, in County Kildare. I'm not sure who her parents were, her husband was James Scully and they ended up moving to Dublin. Here is a thread I made on another account I since lost years ago, with some other details:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=728806.0

But long and short of it is, my grandmother took a DNA test recently, and she has several close matches with descendants of a William Leo Colligan, who lived from 1797-1868. Unfortunately I can't see where he lived and died, but it looks like there are some notes attached to his profile, a picture with some text attached. I wondered if anyone could be so kind to look up that profile for me and just tell me what is says, if it gives any further information about Mr. Colligan. Thank you very much.

Hi everyone, doing some genealogy work for my great-aunt, and she has a line of descent from a Medearis family from Virginia. One of her ancestors through that family, a Rachel Davis, there is some evidence she was a daughter of Edward Davis and Mary Reade of King and Queen County Virginia, and that her mother was a cousin of Augustine Washington.

Looking on Wikitree, it showed some DNA matches for Rachel Davis Medaris, and then for her potential mother, Mary Reade. There was one user, who showed as a DNA match for Mary Reade (her tree indicates she descended from Mary's sister), and so did several other people who descend from Rachel Davis.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Reade-218

I'm not much of an expert at all when it comes to DNA, and I don't know how Wikitree judges DNA connections, but the users in question it said had used Ancestry's DNA test. Does this seem a good indication/evidence for Rachel's parentage? I wondered how wikitree sifts through matches and decides who is a likely match for an ancestor, and if it's a good piece of evidence to use.
