Ireland / Thetfords
« on: Wednesday 13 September 06 13:39 BST (UK)  »

I'm trying to find any relatives of William Thetford of Manchester, England b.1801 in Ireland. William had a son called Henry Thetford also born in Ireland in 1821 so I can only guess that William left Ireland after the year 1821 to move to Manchester.

William also had a couple of daughters. One called Jane, who was married to a man called Adam Craig and one called Jessey who was born in Dublin in 1819. Jessey lived in Manchester and was known in 1881 as Jessey Todd.

Information on any Thetford from Ireland will be delightfully recieved. Thank you,
      Josh.

United States of America / The Carmenia, Ellis Island.
« on: Sunday 26 March 06 05:08 BST (UK)  »
Clarence Thetford of Salford (b. Sep qr 1893) arrived at Ellis Island, New York, on 1st Feb 1914, aged 21 on the ship Carmenia out of Liverpool, being listed as a resident of Warrington. He had a son, Harry Thetford (b.16 Nov 1917) in New York and moved back to England bringing his son with him at the end of the War.

I am trying to find out who Harry's mother was. Clarence was working on the ships during World War I in New York when Harry was born. Possibly shipbuilding. Presumably that is when he met Harry's mother. Can anyone help?

Clarence was married to Agnes HOLDEN, Jun Qr. 1952 in Heywood Dist. She was born about 1892, died Dec Qr. 1967 in Heywood Dist., aged 75 and I think that this was Clarence's second wife.

Lancashire / Jericho, Bury.
« on: Thursday 23 March 06 22:42 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out as much as I can about the history of Jericho, Bury, Lancs, the village that my mother was born in and I was born in, so that I can fill in a bit of my own biography. I have searched high and low on the internet for information but to no avail. All the history I find there revolves around the hospital and little else.

I am fascinated to know as to why, for instance, the place was named Jericho, and also by who and when? Who were the earliest builders and settlers in Jericho? e.t.c. It is as mysterious to me as the Bermuda triangle!

I met an elderly woman from Jericho once and she told me that the original settlers there were a denomination of christians who sought to build a new and miniaturised version of Israel there. I wonder if it was they that inspired Blake to write 'Jerusalem?'

Do you know anything about the history of the place?

Lincolnshire / North Cockerington & the Dixons.
« on: Thursday 23 March 06 21:08 GMT (UK)  »

Hallo. I am looking for information on my Great Grandfather George Richard Dixon and trying to research my Dixon family line.

The information that my Lancashire family have about George R.Dixon is fairly miniscule but here goes.

George was born 28th or 29th July 1901 and he died in Manchester on 17th March 1993. He had two sisters, Doris and Agnes and a brother, Richard.

His father was Richard Dixon and his mother was Elisabeth Woodfield, born 17th October 1868 and Richard and Elisabeth were married to each other. Richard had a half sister called Mary Ann(b.1822 - d.1887).

   George married Ethel Brundritt(b.1902 - d.27th Feb 1940) and they had two children, Harold(b.29th Sep 1926) and Elsie(b.29th Mar1931 - d.17th June 2004).

   Elsie married Harry Thetford(b.16th Nov 1917 - d.29th June 1965) on 17th June 1951. They had two children, Irene(b.15th Feb 1952) & Ian(b.6th July 1954).

After Ethel died George married again and had a son called Maurice. Maurice Dixon married Lois. George is buried in Blackley Cemetry in Manchester.

I wonder whether George was from Lincolnshire being that his son Harold lives nearby in Wiltshire. His daughter Elsie said that as far as she knew he was from a place beginning with the letter L.

I have found a branch of Dixons that comes from Lincolnshire and I will post my findings if anyone needs me to. I would like help in verifying this information. All help is welcome.

Thank you for reading this. josh.
