World War Two / Release of WW2 Service records
« on: Tuesday 13 September 22 19:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Will there ever be a release of WW2 Service Records by the MoD? WW1 service records were released after seventy five years, 1993. Seventy five years for WW2 was 2020. Or is this a case of  the MoD being onto a nice little earner at £30 a time for each record released.

Thanks Mick

Norfolk / Chequers St, Hainford
« on: Monday 08 June 20 19:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Do any locals know if there is/was a street in Hainford called Chequers St? I've got some rellies on the 1851 census for Hainford and it looks like it says they live in Chequers St. I've done a quick search on google maps but can't find one. There is however a pub called the Hainford Chequers on Hainford Rd, would this road have changed its name over the years at all, or would the nearby Waterloo Rd be a name change?

Any Help greatly appreciated

Mick

The Common Room / Ancestry 'Tag'
« on: Saturday 16 May 20 10:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I've been using the tags in Ancestry for all the various occupations of my ancestors but was wondering if there is a way to find/ bring up/make a list of all the people who did the various occupations e.g. all the gardeners, agri labourers etc.

Any Ideas?
Thanks Mick

Occupation Interests / GWR in Canning Town East London
« on: Wednesday 18 March 20 14:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
A bit stuck on one of the ancestors, William Gall b 1881 Martham, Norfolk.
Like a lot of my ancestors (and me) he was a railwayman but I cant find anything about him in the railway records on ancestry. There are a lot of William Galls (and variants) there, many of which are mine but none are him.
The info I have has been gleaned is from the 1911 Census and the 1939 Register.
1911 - Gt Western Railway Porter living at 65 Prince of Wales Road, Custom House, Canning Town, London E
1939 - Railway Goods Checker 12 Connaught Approach West Ham
There is also a William Gall Ive found in the medal cards who during WW1 was in the ROD RE which may or may not be him.
I’m hoping to track him down a bit more though. Any ideas where I could look? Do ancestry have all the GWR service records or are there some still at Kew. I was also thinking about maybe a visit to Wiltshire and Swindon history centre or STEAM the GWR Museum at Swindon – although going there I’d probably not do any research, just drool over the steam locos and of course being over that way it’d be rude not to pop into Didcot Railway centre and see some more Steam locos ;D ;D ;D
I have managed to find a map from 1920 of the area in question. It shows a two GWR Goods depots and the places William lived so maybe a visit to the archives of Newnham Council.
Any Ideas
Thank Mick

Armed Forces / Trade Badge on Uniform sleeve
« on: Sunday 26 January 20 16:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
My Gt Grandfather joined the 1st Dragoons on 1st Nov 1883 and went on to finish as a Farrier Quartermaster Sgt in 1905.
On  21st Oct 1885 he was appointed a shoeing smith.
Whilst surfing the web I came across this photo from The national Army Museum
https://collection.nam.ac.uk/detail.php?acc=1990-09-60-1
It shows a squadron of troopers from 1 Royal Dragoons in 1886 at Aldershot, they're wearing stable dress. two of them caught my eye, the first is the Sgt 2nd row 3rd left and the trooper 5th row 4th left they appear to have a horse shoe on their arms, would they be farriers?
I know its a long shot and a bit of wistful thinking  probably but if they are the trooper might be my Gt Grandfather.
Any ideas?
Thanks Mick

The Common Room / Merging trees on ancestry.
« on: Tuesday 29 October 19 16:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all
is it possible to merge different trees together on ancestry? I've got three separate tress that eventually all lead back to the same parents and was wondering if there was a way to merge them. I don't fancy having to start a new tree an input all the info separately.

Thanks Mick
