The Common Room / Book:= A history of the Robins family of England, c.1159-2006
« on: Saturday 12 December 20 13:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I'm looking for someone who may have a copy of the book "A history of the Robins family of England, c.1159-2006" written by John Anthony Robins and privately published in 2009. The only source I can find so far is in the British Library but as things are I can't go there to see it. If anyone does have a copy I would like to know if it includes details of any Robyns/Robins/Robbins living in Osgathorpe, Leicestershire or the surrounding areas in the 16th century.
Please note that I have already have a copy of "Gleanings of the Robins Family of England" which unfortunately was not of any help.
Many thanks, Paul

The Common Room / Can anyone recommend a book please
« on: Wednesday 29 April 20 13:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Can anyone recommend a book that deals with the terminology, customs and practices etc. of 12th and 13th century legal documents such as deeds and Feet of Fines? I am hoping to interpret the meaning and intentions as they would apply when they were written.
Thanks.

The Common Room / Paying homage and service in medieval times
« on: Tuesday 14 April 20 14:54 BST (UK)  »
The following is an excerpt from deeds undated but would have been in the 13th century.

"Grant by Henry de Temple to Richard de Temple his eldest son begotten of his true spouse, of all his land held of the Templars in the town of Temple (Templum) by Welcboure, both land in bondage and land in demesne, with the homage and service of William de Temple".

My question is was the homage paid by William to Richard who would have been William's Lord, or the other way around and William was the Lord and now Richard has to pay homage?

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Quartering and Heraldic Heiresses
« on: Wednesday 08 April 20 11:30 BST (UK)  »
In the Visitation of Leicestershire 1619 page 44 there is shown the pedigree of Whethill of Shepey their Arms quartering is given as Whethill, Flaunders (Flanders) and Shepey.
Richard Whithill, living in 1436 had two wives, first Margaret de Shepey heiress to John de Shepey of Great Shepey, Leicestershire and second Margaret de Flanders co-heiress to John de Flanders of Flanders, Warwickshire.
Am I right to assume that Richard's heir Thomas Whithill would only be allowed to display the Arms of his biological mother and not of both his father's wives. If so then the Shepey Arms must come from another Shepey/Whethill marriage.
Any guidance or thoughts would be appreciated.

Warwickshire / Flor. Wigorn
« on: Monday 23 March 20 10:55 GMT (UK)  »
In William Dugdale's "The Antiquities of Warwickshire illustrated" of 1656 on page 87 he gives a pedigree going back to Leofric Earl of Chester. He cites a reference for the earliest part of the pedigree as follows. (It is difficult to read so apologies if I've mis-transcribed it)
Ex. vet. MS id calcem Flor. Wigorn
Can anyone expand on this, in particular who or what is Flor. Wigorn?
I suspect it is something to do with the Saxon Chronicles.
Any help would be appreciated.

The Common Room / When is Phillip a Girls name.
« on: Thursday 05 March 20 11:06 GMT (UK)  »
When recently researching an ancestor from Cornwall I was initially thrown off track by my 7th GGF who was called Phillip. I thought I had found his baptism record but it turned out that child was actually female. Further investigation indicated that it was not uncommon in Cornwall for girls to be baptised as Phillip and there is no indication that it was meant to be short for Phillippa. I wondered if this is common in other parts of the UK or just a local anomaly.

Warwickshire / My 4th GGF originally came from Warwickshire but where is this place?
« on: Thursday 05 March 20 10:22 GMT (UK)  »
My 4th GGF Daniel Lester lived most of his life in Shepshed, Leicestershire. From the details of his second marriage to Mary Middelton on 18 Mar 1840 we know his father was Thomas Lester deseased.
Daniel died on 28 Aug 1856 at the Union Workhouse in Loughborough aged 77. From the 1851 census for Shepshed he was a lodger living with William Kenny and his wife Elizabeth, he was 69 and his place of birth was a place in Warwickshire. This gives his DOB around 1779 - 1782.
However, the place of birth is not obvious, it looks like Tamm or Tams perhaps. My first thought was that it was Tamworth in Staffordshire because I believe in those days part of Tamworth was in Warwickshire. But I am not able to find any trace of him there so far. I have attached the 1851 census record it is the entry at the bottom of the page.
Can anyone suggest an alternative place in Warwickshire that he may have come from?
Thanks in advance.
