Europe / Kolupaytio or variations
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 20:12 GMT (UK)  »
A friend has asked me to help her trace her father's family background.  His name was Joseph Kolupaytio.  We think that he was born in Warsaw, poland in 1906.  He came to England with his parents sometime before 1922. (He married in Bethnal Green, London in 1922)  His parents were Michael and Agatha Kolupaytio.  The spelling of the name on English records varies considerable sometimes two versions on the same record.

We do we start to find the following?

1.  When did they come to England?
2.  Where does the family come from?  The name doesn't sound Polish.
3.  Would they have had to register as "Aliens" and if so where are these records.

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated as this is my first attempt at an Immigrant family

Suffolk / HAMMONDS of Stowupland
« on: Tuesday 24 October 06 18:32 BST (UK)  »
Edward Hammond & Sarah were the parents of Frederick 1814, Henry 1821, Sophia 1823, George 1825 and Thomas 1826.  The children and their decendents all lived in Stowupland for the next 50/60 years.  Does anybody know where Edward and Sarah came from.  It could be Stowmarket, Stowupland or Stoke by Nayland, all haveappeared in various records.  Does anybody have connections with or knowledge of this family.  I would be very interested to hear from you.

Northamptonshire / The RILEYS Of Long Bucky Wharf
« on: Monday 04 September 06 17:20 BST (UK)  »
I have very recently discovered that my 3rd Great grandfather was a boatman in and around Long Buckby Wharf.  I have located four children,
Joseph,(b. abt 1811)   he went to Leicester as a railway porter
Mary (b 20/3/181813)
Thomas (b abt. 1816) he was a boatman but eventually also went to Leicester
Edward (b. abt 1821)

Being Boat people they would have travelled up and down the Canal system and in and out of the record systems.  i would like to know where Edward snr and Jnr came from.  Who was Alice and where did she come from.  What happened to Mary and Edward Jnr.  any ideas of where to look for boat people.

Flintshire / RILEYS in Buckley, Flintshire
« on: Thursday 27 July 06 16:33 BST (UK)  »
On the 1861 Census Joseph Riley, my Grt x 2 Grandfather states that he was born in Buckley.  He was born about 1815 but lived in Leicester from 1840 until his death in 1864.  On his marriage certificate in 1840 his father is named as Edward Riley, occupation Boatman.

Joseph does not appear in the Hawarden Parish Baptism records between 1801 to 1810 or 1811 to 1820.  He is on the 1841 census but not the 1851 census though his wife and family are in Leicestershire.  He may have been at work etc, he was a Railway Porter.

I cannot identify Edward Riley either as I am not sure if he is in Wales or anywhere else.

Riley is not a naturally Welsh name so did Edward Riley come from Ireland or not?

I am stuck I am afraid.  Has anybody knowledge of Joseph or Edward Riley or can suggest any resources to explore? Any ideas at all would be welcomed.

Berkshire / Eliza Crofts, again
« on: Sunday 23 July 06 17:29 BST (UK)  »
Eliza Crofts is my Grt x 2 GrandMother.  She was born about 1815 in Reading.  Her father wasCharles Crofts from Newbury.  I believe that her mother was Sarah Pithers from Branham, Berkshire.  Eliza married Joseph Ryley in Jan 1840 In Leicester  where her father Charles was a publican.

Does anybody have any knowledge of the Crofts in Newbury and especially Charles whom I think was born about 1793

Joseph Riley lived in Leicester from 1838 until about 1867 when he died.  He was a Porter on the Railway.  He married Eliza.  On the 1861 census his place of birth is shown as BUCKLEY in 1812.  But which Buckley could it be.  any ideas?
