London and Middlesex / Loughborough House School
« on: Tuesday 12 October 21 11:22 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for records relating to Loughborough House School, Brixton. Particularly who founded it and lists of head masters or teachers.
According to https://boroughphotos.org/lambeth/loughborough-house-loughborough-road-brixton-north/ it became a school in 1785.
Lambeth Archives don't appear to have any on-line searchable databases or indexes - or have I missed something?
Any pointers greatfully received.
Thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / LMA Lookup Turner 1682 please
« on: Thursday 26 August 21 19:02 BST (UK)  »
I stumbled, quite by accident, on the Royal and Sun Alliance archive at LMA whilst searching on-line for something completely unrelated. Living way up north and not in the best of health means a visit is out of the question.
If anyone felt able to look up the following 3 refs and let my have any personal details from the individual docs it would be greatly appreciated:

The main one is:
Insured: Revd. Richard Turner, Loughborough House, Brixton Causeway, Surrey
Date of Creation: 1782 Nov 20
Reference Code: CLC/B/192/F/001/MS11936/306/467462

There are 2 Rev Richard Turner at Loughborough Hose, father and son. The father's birthdate is uncertain. I would like any personal details from this doc to identify the individual. Was he insuring Loughborogh House, a school, or only his own residence? IS his age or DoB given?

The same archive has two entries for
Insured: Revd. William Hancock Roberts, Worcester
Ref: CLC/B/192/F/0001/MS11936/351/539910 dated Jan 21 1788 and
Ref: CLC/B/192/F/001/MS11936/322/495469 dated Aug 4 1784
Again any personal detaiols and what was insured whould be greatly appreciated

Many Thanks

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Newdigate /Green family links
« on: Thursday 19 August 21 10:28 BST (UK)  »
I am researching Sarah Greene and her reputed links to the Newdigate of Arbury family, and struggling!
I came across http://www.broseley.org.uk/Newsletters/journal2004-web.PDF which prints a letter from James Green (Sarah's nephew) to Sir Roger Newdigatethat seems to confirm the family link and quotes a reference :
Warwickshire County Record Office, Newdigate Papers: Letter from James Greene to Sir Roger Newdigate, Oct 4th 1792, Reference CR136/B909. The letter is printed in full.
A search of the on-line catalogue for Warwickshire records has two further references
CR0136/B911 : Letter from James Green Concerning collateral Newdigate family branches [Bloom index p. 613]
and
CR0136/B912-913 Letter from James Green Concerning Christopher Newdigate & Mr Greene's descent from family [Bloom index p. 613].
Unfortunately Warwick is too far for me to travel.
Please - is anyone able to access these records and let me know what they say.

Thanks

Shropshire / Sarah Greene born 1720 Burford, Shropshire
« on: Wednesday 31 March 21 14:51 BST (UK)  »
Sarah married Richard Turner at Burford church 7 May 1742.
Having spent some time on a fruitless earch for her husband's ancestry ( a visit to Worcester archives is required) I thought I would turn to Sarah Green baptised Burford, Shropshire in 1720.

I believe her parents were George Greene (?- Mar 1768) and Sarah(?-Dec 1723).
With children:
Mary Greene 22 Jul 1713 Burford
Hannah Greene 26 Jun 1717 Burford
Sarah 10 Oct 1720 Burford buried Dec 1800 Broseley
George Pooton Greene 17 Dec 1723 Burford, Buried Mar 1768 Ludlow

George maried Martha Jones Sep 1744 in Ludlow and had a child James Greene bapt  23 Feb 1745 Ludlow.

According to a genealogy published in Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldics in the early 1800s (which is known to have errors)
'Sarah Greene, only sister of James Greene Barrister at Law of Burford near Tenbury, Co. Worcs; related to the Cornwall and Newdigate families and descended from the Barons of Burford. Her brother died without issue'
Spot the errors ! James son of George Pooton Greene was indeeed a lawyer, as was his father.
Can anyone help out with her links to the Barons of Burford, the Cornwall and/or Newdigate families? Or even any further ancestry at all!

Any help greatfully received. Thanks.

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Turner Worcester city parishes 1720-1745
« on: Monday 15 March 21 13:44 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone has access to transcripts I would appreciate lookups of the following please.
Which Worcester Parish, parents names and any additional info. given would be nice.

IGI does not indicate which parish just a generic 'Worcester'

Sarah (1745) is on IGI as 'Worcester, Stafford, England', clearly wrong. They have allocated it to St Andrews, Ombersley. I wonder if it could be St Andrews, Worcester as her father runs a school in St Andrews, Worcester a few years later.
Also the 'Robert' - could this be a transcription error for Richard- maybe I will have to wait to visit The Hive to check this.

Sarah Turner 18/6/1745 (of Richard and Sarah)
Elizabeth Turner 27/11/1720 (rest of Thomas and Mary)
Robert Turner 22/5/1723
Sarah Turner 12/6/1723
John Turner 28/12/1724

Thanks

Surrey / Loughborough House School, Brixton 1750-1815
« on: Sunday 07 March 21 14:29 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know of, or have acces to, any books or reecords relating to Loughborough House School? Is it perhaps mentioned in any Surrey history books?
I am interested in what dates when the following gentelmen were teachers at the school.
Rev Richard Turner Snr 1720-1791
Rev Richard Turner Jnr 1752-1788
Rev William Hancock Roberts 1745-1814
I know about the books the Turners wrote and of their National Biography entires.
Richard Snr wrote books between 1761 and 1766 and two of thes say 'teacher at Worcester' but don't identify the shool. A later book in 1787, a course in mathematics and geometry may have been at Loughborough house.
Richard Jnr wrote books between 1778 and 1788 and these were aimed as school texts, at least one mentions Loughborough House School
I also know that shortly after Richard Snr died, in 1791, his wife Sarah wrote her will and gave her place of residence as Loughborough House.
I know that William Roberts was headmaster at Kings School, Worcester, until 1788 and that he was married to the Sarah, the daughter of Richard Snr so I suspect Roberts was at Loughborough when his mother in law Sarah wrote her will.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Essex / Turner of Bluntshall, Essex
« on: Tuesday 02 March 21 11:33 GMT (UK)  »
In 1785 a grant of arms to Rev Dr Richard Turner LL.D. (1720 - 1791) indicates that he previously used the arms of Turner of Bluntshall (Encyclopaedia of Heraldry, Burke, 1851) and wanted to differentiate his branch. Richard Turner was baptised in Great Witley Worcs, son of Thomas Turner.

Can anyone help tie Rev Turner to the Essex branch? I am getting nowhere working backwards the line dries up with this Rev Richard Turner.

I cant work forwards because I dont know who the Turners of Bluntshall are - are they the same, or related to, Sir Edward Turnor 1617-1676?

Thanks
