Staffordshire / Help needed Please
« on: Wednesday 06 January 16 03:17 GMT (UK)  »
Good Morning from Australia….

This is rather long winded but I’m hoping that this contained information will assist in my request for help after researching for 20 years and finding little.

Hugh Fraser (aka Frazer & Frazier) married Mary Ferguson (recorded as Fargason) 26 May 1831 in Wednesbury Staffordshire. Mary was the daughter of Phoebe Ferguson and Mary’s father is unknown…when they married Hugh signed his name and Mary made her Mark….
Hugh Died at a young age of 37 years in October 1837 after a tragic accident of being run over by cartwheel whilst working in Madeley Staffordshire... (info obtained from Coroner’s Inquest). Hugh was buried at St. Peters, Maer. Staffordshire on 16 Oct 1837….which means his birth is Circa 1800.

With all of this information that I have gathered over some 25 years I still do not know who his parents were after gathering Primary records (i.e.) Marriage  etc. I do not know if Hugh was Scots or Irish as the name changed over the years with his descendants to “Fraser” as it’s known today.

I would very much appreciate any help or guidance as I do not want to give up and hopefully someone in this group may be able to assist me in my request to find out….Thanking you one an all for your patience.

Sincerely,
Fay Fraser

Galway / BURKE - Winifred....
« on: Monday 20 April 15 11:10 BST (UK)  »
Just returning to Family History after many years of Lapse & family health issues.... I am in need of assistance and would appreciate any advice or direction.

My GG Grandmother was an Irish Convict transported & arrived in Port Jackson, NSW Australia 17 August, 1840 aboard the Vessel " Margaret (3)." She was tried for larceny and sentenced to 7 years. From the research that I had done some years ago.. it would appear that she was imprisoned in Grange-Gorman Prison, Dublin... prior to transportation,

My query is twofold.... (a) where could I obtain/purchase a copy of the Trial held April 6th, 1840, which she was sentenced to 7 years transportation.. and also I understand that she had a prior conviction in which she received a 6 months sentence, methinks in County Galway but not sure..... again I would like to obtain a copy of this trial as well..

Winifred Burke was the daughter of Patrick Burke ( a Miller) and her mother was Mary Ward and they came from County Galway.. Winifred's Birth year was Circa 1820 or there about's... I have no other information about her family or if any other siblings.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely

Faysie

Galway / BURKE Winifred... Transported to Australia 1840. Help Please.
« on: Monday 27 January 14 23:52 GMT (UK)  »
Good Morning... :)

I live in Australia and I'm trying to research my GG Grandmother Winifred Burke. she came from Galway ( someone suggested Tuam)... her Father's name was Patrick Burke and Mother's name was Mary Ward....that is all I know..

Winifred's Trial was 06 April 1840 Galway for stealing  clothes she was employed as a kitchen Maid I do not know where...she was then sentenced to 7 years transportation.. she arrived on board the Vessel Margaret 3. in 1840....I have quite a bit of History after she arrived until her Death.... but nothing prior to that.
I wonder if someone could assist or point me in the right direction of where to start looking and researching as I'm not familiar with the Irish Counties ( apologies if offended- just being honest).... perhaps the person to whom she was employed ( which would be on the Trial Papers which I have never seen but would love too ).

Hoping to hear in the future.. Have a wonderful day

Sincerely

Faysie

Lincolnshire / Edward SHARP- General Quarter Sessions Look up please.
« on: Saturday 23 February 13 09:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hello again.

I have done further research on my Grandfather Edward SHARP, (b) 1828 @ Blankney, Lincs. and am in need of help once again...

In December of 1849 Edward ( the younger & my Grandfather) was duely appointed as an Articled Clerk of Attorneys to the Firm of Thomas Wills who had practices in both Blankney, County Lincolnshire & also in Shaftesbury, County Dorset....I have sighted the signatures of both Edward ( the Younger) and his father Edward Sharp ( the Elder).... Then on the night of 30 March 1851 when the 1851 when the 1851 UK census was taken... my Edward was a visitor in the home of the " New Family"...... it states his occupation and said that Edward lived in Spalding, which is only 2 miles from his then home in Pinchbeck... I now find that an Edward SHARP was committed for Trial  on 11th April 1851 in the General Quarter Session of Kirton & Louth ( Source: Ancestry Entry No: 20- Page 314 in the Criminal Registers...)... found Guilty of Larceny and sentenced to 3 months Imprisonment.....

I have tried to find out exactly what he did, & where he went to Prison, but I'm not having much luck....I took out a small subscription on Find My Past as I thought there would have been an Article written about him, but I'm sure I'm doing something wrong as I can't find anything...

I wonder if someone could obtain a copy and Scan and send it to me please if they are able to obtain it or... any other information that would help me find out if this was infact my Edward....if so... what did he do and where did he go the Prison for the 3 months.

There was another Edward Sharpe a Poacher who had various convictions and I downloaded the articles from the new British Newspaper site on FindMyPast... both in January and also April of 1852....but this was not my Edward.. " Thank Goodness"....this fellow was a real scallywag..

I would appreciate hearing any advice or information from the notes that I have written here.

Thanks very much in Advance.

Lincolnshire / EDWARD SHARP- Blankney... Lincolnshire... Help Please. !!!
« on: Friday 25 January 13 10:45 GMT (UK)  »

This is a little "longwinded", but I can't seem to fins an answer.. hence the story if it will make it a little easier to understand.... perhaps someone may be able to help me please...

My Grandfather Edward Sharp ( the younger) ( b) 1828 @ Blankney, Lincolnshire, son of Edward ( The Elder) & Susannah Sharp of Blankney was contracted to become and Articled Clerk to the Attorney or Solicitors of Thomas Mills of Shaftesbury, County of Dorset and also Blankney, County of Lincolnshire.. Articles of Contract dated 5Th Oct 1849- Swearing of Affidavit 5Th Dec 1849 and Filing of Affidavit 20Th Dec 1849...this Source was found on Ancestry...

According to the UK Census 1851 my Edward an Articled Attorney was a visitor at the home of the " New Family" @ 72 Salisbury St, Shaftesbury, Co Dorset.. ( Source HO107-1851 Folio 102- Page 19... This can be found on Ancestry...the Census was taken on the night of 30Th March, 1851... so I have concluded that this is one of the same....

Now my question and query is as follows.... According to Criminal Registers.. ( Source HO27- piece 96- Page 312)... there was an Edward Sharp who appeared before the General Quarter Session in Kesteven, County of Lincolnshire on the dates
of 11-15-16-17 April, 1851- Reg No: 20 in the Book. .. he was charged with Larceny and sentenced to 3 months imprisonment..... I would love to know if this is my Grandfather Edward Sharp.. there was family talk that someone in the family was in trouble with the Law and given an large amount of money ( some Fifteen Hundred Pounds) and told to leave England..... methinks this is my Edward.!!!!

I have never been able to find out how my Edward arrived here as there are so many Edward Sharp/e's- Mr Sharp/e's etc both in Port Jackson and Port Phillip Bay Vic.... especially if he was a paying Passenger...

Can anyone tell me how I can find out if the Larceny Charged Edward Sharp was in fact my grandfather... I do not know where to look.... Thanks in Advance...

Staffordshire / FRASER/FRAZER/FRAISER- Can you Help Please !!
« on: Thursday 06 September 12 02:37 BST (UK)  »
I am in need of help in finding the Birthplace of a Hugh Fraser/Frazer/Fraiser who married Mary Ferguson (aka Fargason on IGI Records) perhaps she had an accent??-  they married @ Wednesbury, Staffordshire in May 1831.

They had a son named Alexander who ws Baptised @ High Offley, Staffordshire.... and on the Parish Register Alexander's parents were named Hugh Fraiser and Mary Fargason/Ferguson- hence the assumption of an accent.

It is really Alexander's father Hugh that I am trying to find out where he was born?.. either Scotland or Ireland or perhaps somewhere else in England.. I wonder if someone has access to the Parish Marriage Transcripts of Wednesbury, Staffordshire they could assist me. as I live in Australia and cannot find out this information.

it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You for your patience.

Lincolnshire / DORRINGTON. research help
« on: Saturday 21 April 12 05:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm researching the Village of Dorrington in the period of 1750- 1800.. I know that the Village was very small and very few people lived there.. for instance in 1801  the population was 225 people and rose to 379 in 1841... I have searched Google, Genuki but cannot find what I'm looking for...

I would like to know who owned the Land, or was Lord of the Manor and what the times were like during the period before 1841, when the Earl of Harrowby was Lord of the Manor and owned most of the land in that period...

My GGG Grandparents William SHARP married Dorothy PHILLIPS ( akas Phillars according to the IGI ) in the Parish Church of St. James & St. John, Dorrington. on  17 May, 1765,, They had 7 children all Baptised at the above Church between the years of 1766 and 1773..... I know that William was a Farmer and I'm trying to piece together their lives, what the times were like, was their famine around that period of time... or were there any other circumstances that happened.

..I don't just make entries of my Ancestors names and dates, as I believe every person has some kind of story to be told about their lives.. and that is what I'm trying to establish with William & Dorothy.

I do hope that someone may be able to help me, and I do so look forward to hearing some advice of where to search or any information would be a wonderful help.

Thank you for your patience.

Sincerly

Thomas Sharp was born Bapt South Kyme and Clara ( nee Kinnersley) was Bapt 1809?? @ Boston.. her father's name was Henry.

Thomas, who was a Farmer & Brewer and Clara spent most of their married lives living in/ around  Kirton Fen.

Lincolnshire / EDWARD SHARP- MISSING for 10 years !!!
« on: Sunday 07 August 11 01:35 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking help with finding my Grandfather. Edward Sharp. Bapt  04 November, 1828 @ Blankney. Lincs.- his parents were Edward & Susannah Sharp ( nee Plowright).

According to the 1841 UK Census.. Edward  ( aged 12 years ) was attending a Boys school in Aubourn, together with his older brother Jonathan Plowright Sharp ( aged 14 years _.

I have been concentrating so much on Edward's parents, and suddenly realised that I had little or no information on my grandfather except to know that he is listed in the 1841 UK Census ( asmentioned) and I knew he sailed to Australia about 1853... and of his life in Australia there after. together with his brother Jonanthan and Henry who left England in 1861 to come to Australia... My Grandfathers parents Edward & Susannah Sharp ( nee Plowright) both died in 1877 @ Spalding. Lincs.

I looked in the 1851 UK Census and found an Edward Sharp , Visitor aged 21yrs, occupation Attorney Articled Pupil, born Spalding.. which looks like a strong lead as Pinchbeck was where his parents farm was located... ( Ref# HO107 1851- Dorset. Folio 102. page 19 ).. This also seems to make sense as records here in Australia have shown he was an educated Gentleman and at one stage was appointed a Commissioner of Lands in New South Wales.

I would appreciate any help I can receive in finding out what happened to my Grandfather Edward between 1841 & 1851, but am unsure of where to start looking..

Much appreciation..

Sincerely

Faysie
