World War One / Help with identification of regiment and name
« on: Thursday 10 August 23 14:32 BST (UK)  »
Hello
Please could anyone identify the regiment and name of this soldier.
I read his signature as Ernest L Palmer but am not sure if that is correct.
I think he served in the RAMC and lived in Ipswich before the war.
I am trying to find out if he survived the war. He was still alive on April 2 1917 as I have a letter from him. It says "A Section - no 241" but I'm unsure what that means.
Grateful for any help.
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Queen's bench court records
« on: Saturday 12 March 22 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I'd be very grateful for advice on how to find details of a court case at the Queen's Bench around 3 Feb 1853.
An unnamed daughter of Charles Augustus Goodwin, had a court case against Edward Morrison Pegge for breach of promise.
I found newspaper articles about the court case on FindMyPast. It took place in February 1853 and it's recorded in several newspapers.
The papers say it was at the Court of the Queens Bench - the case is called Goodwin v Pegge.
I want to find out the name of the daughter, as I am missing some children of Charles Augustus Goodwin (b1784-1861). Her sister Harriet Eliza Goodwin is a witness in the case.

Will the court records still exist?
If they do, how should I go about finding them?

Very grateful for any guidance.
Many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with 1861 census surname query
« on: Friday 31 December 21 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I'd be very grateful if anyone could decipher the surname of Ruth Toddy ? in the 1861 census in Eynsford born about 1810. FindMyPast have it as Taddy, Ancestry as Toddy.
I believe that her maiden name was Ruth Best as she is visiting her married sister Eliza Packman nee Best.
It could however be Packman but I've found no evidence of a Ruth Packman born around then.
I've had no luck finding a marriage for a Ruth Best which looks like the Taddy/Toddy surname.
Grateful for any help.
Best wishes

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1871 census Surname query
« on: Wednesday 29 December 21 15:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Grateful if anyone could decipher the surname of Sarah nee Packman in the 1871 census in Eysnford. She was born in 1815 in Eynsford.

Ancestry have transcribed her surname as "Rann" but I can't find any marriages for Sarah Packman to a Rann.

Her mother is Sarah Packman and brother-in-law is John Taylor so I think I have the correct family but have been unable to find any records for Sarah

Many thanks for any help or advice
Best wishes

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Name in 1871 census - help needed
« on: Tuesday 21 December 21 23:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I'd be very grateful for help with the surname of Elizabeth aged 86 in the 1871 census at 36 SouthHill Road, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
Ancestry and FindMyPast have transcribed her surname as Sapper but I can find no other records of a Sapper.
Any ideas? I've managed to work out the other names, which were also incorrect. Elizabeth is living with Helsbys, Dodds, and Seddons.
Many thanks

Please can anybody decipher the handwriting on the back of the photo. I think it gives the placename but can't really read it.
The photo seems to have been removed from a photo album and has got green fibres/fluff on the back. I've tried to remove as much as I can but didn't want to damage the handwriting.
I've included the front of the picture, in case, anybody recognises the location.
Grateful for any help

Please could someone date the photos and restore them.

I believe the little girl to to be my gg-grandmother Louisa Dickens born around 1875 but am not sure.
I don't know who the adult lady is and dating might help me.
I think these might be the Seddon girls whose parents died in 1880. Does the clothing look like it could be from that date?
I'd be grateful for any help.
