My Great Uncle, John Frederick Jones, was born 28th June 1894 in Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire, the eldest of 7 children, son of Thomas and Jane Jones of 39 Smithfield Street.

He was killed in action in the Battle of Gaza, Egypt on 26th March 1917 and his name is inscribed on a memorial panel in Jerusalem Memorial.

Last night I re-subscribed to Find My Past and downloaded his service papers.....What a find!!
I found it quite sad to read the entries "Missing" and "Death accepted for official purposes".

He was awarded 2 medals, Victory & 15 Star.  I have the 15 star, still in it's original box, and it is something that I treasure.

I'm liking what I see so far but just need some time to get used to it again  ;D

« on: Sunday 20 May 12 19:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Does any member have access to Kerry parish registers?  If so, I'd be grateful for a couple of look ups for my TURNER line.

Many thanks in advance :)

Kent / Challinor brothers in Dover
« on: Saturday 26 March 11 18:25 GMT (UK)  »
The Kent board is new territory for me, I usually stay in Montgomeryshire, but after spending the day with my Great Aunt I have found out that two of her Uncles ended up living in Dover.

Richard and Joseph Challinor, the sons of Charles & Florence Challinor, were born in Newtown, Montgomeryshire:-

Richard born 1874 married Louise Smith in 1897, Dudley
Children: George Alexander Challinor, Stanley Challinor both born in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire.
In the 1911 census I have the family in Whiteheath, Rowley Regis.

Joseph Challinor born 1879 married Esther Daniels in 1899, Pontypridd, Glamorganshire
Children: George Granville Challinor (died in infancy), Richard Kendrick Challinor, Beryl Challinor all born in Ystrad, Glamorganshire.
In the 1911 census I have the family in Fron Pentre, Glamorgan.

I have found deaths in Dover on FreeBMD for:

Beryl Challinor Sep Q 1931
Esther Challinor Mar Q 1939
Richard K Challinor Dec Q 1942
Louisa Challinor Mar Q 1953

I have also found a marriage, and births of children with correct mother's maiden name but they may be still alive so won't post details on here.

I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction for finding burial/grave information, or where I would need to look to find out any further information about the Challinor's time in Dover.

Finally, if anyone recognises any of these names I would love to hear from you.  It would make my Great Aunt's day if I could give her some details.

Thank you everyone  :D

Shropshire / ***Shropshire Archives Visit DATE TO BE ADVISED - Look Up Offers***
« on: Friday 11 February 11 15:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All :)

I'm off to the Archives again on the DATE TO BE ADVISED.

I am more than happy to do some look ups for all you Shropshire researchers, so please post nice clear and concise requests here in this thread please :)

Do not start a separate thread on the main board because I'll probably miss it!

No original material requests, as I won't have time to go into the Reading Room.

I would be grateful if you could be quite specific, not too general, otherwise it will take me hours to do just one!!!! ;D

The Lighter Side / It's good to be back!
« on: Friday 23 July 10 23:05 BST (UK)  »
I haven't been on Rootschat for quite some time as I decided to give the family researching a bit of a rest.  After working in an office on a computer all day I just didn't feel like using the home computer at night.

However,......I started to miss the searching so decided to come back and re-start where I left off, and am I glad that I did!!!!!  I decided to concentrate on my Challinor lot and within a day of logging back on I made a connection with a Rootschatter in Canada.  She very kindly sent me a link to her website, which lead to me making contact with another distant cousin.  We've already started to swap information by email, and I'm thrilled!!

I'm just off to search the SIT......see who else I can find ;D

Armed Forces / A very general request!
« on: Saturday 28 November 09 08:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I have a very general query which I'm hoping someone can help me with.  Sorry for the duplications but I would love to try and make a start on this quest on behalf of my father-in-law.

Could I ask you to have a quick look at these three threads:,416849.msg2827384.html#msg2827384
This is my starting point!,412931.msg2798487.html#msg2798487,412933.msg2833610.html#msg2833610

If anyone has any idea I can post more information.

Thank you :)

Armed Forces / Service Records
« on: Monday 02 November 09 19:51 GMT (UK)  »

Can anyone help me with a question please?

If a Malaysian man worked for a British Major or Colonel in the 1930's would there be any documents with the information recorded.

The Malaysian man in question is my father-in-law's father (never met, and that's another mystery which I'm trying to help unravel!), and according to family information was working in Shropshire as a personal chef.

Any information, however small, would be most welcome :D

Thank you.
