Dublin / Looking for Mary Ann BRADY, born c.1848, Dublin
« on: Monday 05 October 20 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

My g-g-grandmother Mary Ann BRADY, daughter of John BRADY (see below) and Elizabeth BRADY (nee INNIS), was born circa 1848 in Dublin.  I am completely unfamiliar with searching Irish ancestry (the rest of my UK ancestors are from Kent), and I am hoping that some of the sleuths on this site can help me find details of Mary's birth and/or baptism.

Mary's marriage certificate and death certificate both give her father's name as John BRADY, and the marriage certificate gives his occupation as "Gardener".  Other than that, I haven't been able to uncover anything about her family with certainty.  I am unsure where or when John BRADY married Elizabeth INNIS, or whether they had any other children.

I'm also keen to find when Mary came out to Australia.  I have a child Mary BRADY of the right age on the ship "Omega" from Plymouth to Melbourne in 1854.  She is listed as one of a family of seven from Dublin, but the two accompanying adults are named as Patrick and Elizabeth BRADY (the only sign of a "John" appears to be an older sibling also on board, aged ten years).  Any assistance with that would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

Kent / Looking for Ann and Margaret CONNELL, circa 1810 and 1815
« on: Monday 05 October 20 08:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have Ann and Margaret CONNELL, who were daughters of Charles CONNELL and Mary CONNELL (nee CLEARY), born circa 1810 and 1815 in Cork and Sheerness respectively.  I am hoping that some of the sleuths on this site can help me find their births and/or baptisms.

Ann and her younger sister Margaret were transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1833.  According to their convict indent records, Ann was born in Cork and Margaret was born in Sheerness, Kent (this is corroborated by her death certificate).  Margaret's death certificate gives Charles CONNELL's occupation as "Navy Officer".  I am unsure where or when Charles married Mary CLEARY, but I believe they had other children as well (there is a Charles CONNELL listed on Margaret's death certificate, who I believe may be her brother).

Ann was a married woman by the time she was transported (married name MILLER), but I haven't been able to track down her marriage.  Any assistance with that would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

Australia / NSW State Library - Bailliere's Victorian Post Office Directories
« on: Friday 04 September 20 08:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi there RCers,

Just wondering if there are any RCers who may be regular visitors to the NSW State Library, and who might be able to assist with searching and copying some entries in Bailliere's Victorian Post Office Directories?  Unfortunately the State Library of Victoria is not taking copy requests at the moment.

I am hoping to obtain copies of the entries for the town of Alexandra in the Bailliere's Victorian Post Office Directories for 1868, 1871/1872 and 1875.  In particular I am keen to see whether the 1868, 1871/1872 and 1875 editions have an entry for John ROFE and/or the Star Hotel, similar to the attached (from the 1869 edition, which is available on Google Books).

It appears that the NSW State Library might only have physical copies of the directories.  I'm not sure whether they also have them in microform.

Any assistance would be kindly appreciated.

Kent / Looking for Martha ROFE (bapt. 1802, Cranbrook, Kent)
« on: Monday 10 August 20 22:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a Martha ROFE (at times spelled ROLFE), who was the eldest child of John ROFE and Susanna ROFE (nee BRIDGLAND), and was baptised at St Dunstan's in Cranbrook on 21/11/1802.  Martha was older sister to my g-g-g-grandfather John ROFE, and I am trying to track down what became of Martha after my g-g-g-grandfather was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1827.

I have a copy of a petition for clemency submitted by Martha in 1827 on behalf of her brother John, which is signed off "Martha Rofe, Servant of the Right Hon'ble the Speaker of the House of Commons" (whom I believe may have been Sir Charles Manners-Sutton).  This is the last trace I have of Martha.

I would dearly like to know what became of Martha, but have been unable to find anything.  I’d appreciate if any of the sleuths on this site can help solve the mystery of what became of Martha ROFE, or if anyone with knowledge of the ROFE family of Cranbrook, Kent, can assist.

Thanks :)

Australia / Looking for Lily Irene EDMUNDS (nee ROFE)
« on: Monday 10 August 20 07:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Lilly Irene ROFE (b. 14/12/1907, Footscray VIC), eldest child of Albert Frederick ROFE and Sarah James ROFE (nee BRERETON), left home around 1923 after a disagreement with her father.  Apart from a sighting at a train station a couple of years later, it appears that her family never saw her again.

In 1939 Lilly (or "Lily", according to the spelling on the marriage certificate) married a Charles EDMUNDS at Gilgandra NSW.  Charles was the eldest son of William EDMUNDS and Johanna EDMUNDS (nee RINDFLEISH) of Gulargambone NSW.  Anecdotal evidence from a sister-in-law of Lily's in 1996 indicates that Charles and Lily EDMUNDS left the area in 1940.  It is at this point that Lily seems to drop off the radar.

Anecdotal evidence from a younger sister (who was born after Lily had left home) has it that her mother told her that Lily had died in Sydney in 1947, but I haven't been able to find any conclusive evidence of this.  Charles EDMUNDS died in Sydney in 1968, so it would appear that there was a move to Sydney at some point.  However, Charles' death notice refers to him as the husband of "Neta" (whom I have established as Neta Mary ABBOTT, nee NEAVES), and electoral rolls establish Charles and Neta as having lived at the same Sydney address for many years.  His death certificate gives his conjugal status as "Never Married", and lists no children.  Neta died in Sydney in 1970.

I haven't been able to find any records relating to Lily post-1939.  It would appear that Charles and Lily separated at some point, and it may be that Lily changed her name, moved interstate or overseas, or that for some reason her death was unrecorded.

I’d appreciate if any of the sleuths on this site can help solve the mystery of what became of Lily Irene EDMUNDS (nee ROFE), or if anyone with knowledge of the EDMUNDS or ABBOTT families can assist.

Thanks  :)
