Leicestershire / Edward John Major (Ted) - Help please
« on: Friday 02 September 16 16:51 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me.

My mum's uncle moved to Leicester (the rumour goes that he was put in Leicester prison and stayed in Leicester afterwards) from Towcester, Northamptonshire.

We're trying to find out any information we can on him.

His name is Edward John Major.  He was born on May 10th 1925 and died in Leicester in August 2001.

My mum seems to think he had a daughter called Elisabeth but we can't find any record of this or of any marriage.

Can anyone find any information regarding him.

Hi

I wonder if anyone is visiting the records office at some point or has access to any records.  I'm looking for a birth/baptism for Isabella Cullope born circa 1798 in Yelling, Hunts.  I'm hoping to find out who her parents are.

She married John Moore in 1819 in Melchbourne, Beds

Any help will be gratefully received.

TIA

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Coventry Herbert Centre Archive look up request
« on: Sunday 13 September 15 16:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Is anyone going to the Coventry History Centre at The Herbert in Coventry City Centre in the near future or possibly the Warwickshire Records Office and would be able to do some lookups for me?

I am advised by the History Centre that they hold the admissions register for the Leicester Street Industrial School for girls from 1862 - 1912.  I'm looking for a Lilian Florence Major who was a boarder/pupil at the school in 1911 and would have started between 1909 and 1911.  The reference to the archives is CCF/6/6/1

I would be eternally grateful if someone could look for the records for me.  I would go myself but by looking at their website it looks like the reading rooms are not open on a saturday.

Thank you in advance.

Canada / Herbert John MAJOR - Possibly moved to Canada in 1909 - Please help
« on: Sunday 12 July 15 14:55 BST (UK)  »
I am at a dead end.

Herbert John Major was born in Brackley Workhouse, Northamptonshire in 1898.  He was living in Helmdon, Northamptonshire in 1901.  His mother was Susannah Marian Major.  He was illegitimate.

I believe I have found him on a passenger list on the Dominion ship going from Liverpool to Portland departing on 25th February 1909 and arriving in canada on 7th March 1909.  I believe this ship had a group of Dr Barnados children on it.

This is the last record I can find (and obviously have no guarantee it is the correct person).

I would be really grateful if anyone is able to find any more information on him.  If he was a Dr Barnardos child would he have had his name changed when he arrived in Canada?  Also because of his age would he have served in ww1?

Any details that anyone might have would be gratefully received.

Many thanks :)

« on: Tuesday 23 June 15 11:04 BST (UK)  »
Ecton Village Primary is celebrating 140 years since it was opened in 1876 next year and my friend is researching the history of the school.  Does anyone have any information, stories photos etc about the school that we can use as part of the research?

Any help would be gratefully received.

World War Two / What does the stripe on the cap mean - RAF
« on: Saturday 13 June 15 20:17 BST (UK)  »
These two photos are of my grandfather John Alexander Linnell at various stages during his RAF career.  I don't know much about when he was in the RAF apart from that he was enlisted during WW2 (not sure if this was by choice or conscription).

Anyway I was wondering what the white band meant on his cap.  I'm guessing it's some type of promotion/ranking but any help would be great

Hi

Still on the sorting old photos.  Could somebody please restore this photo.  You all did a really lovely job on the last one.  It is of my Grandma and Grandad.  They look so happy together.  I think my Grandma never got over him going.

Thanks in advance

Hi All

We've been scanning in old photos from boxes of slides that belonged to my Dad.

The people in the photo are my grandparents and my dad.  I would be really grateful if someone could have a go at restoring it.  It'll be 3 years since my dad passed away next month so it would be lovely if someone could make this photo lovely again.

Thank you again in advance
