London and Middlesex / William Woodall Teacher of Mathematics
« on: Sunday 11 February 24 13:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone.
I'm hoping you more familiar with London than I can help and more specifically the Hackney area.I'm trying to find information about a William Woodall, a Maths Teacher in the 19th century. Where he may have taught etc. He was born in Newark, Nottingham in 1801 but moved to London to teach. he married a Caroline Farrell in Kensington, and between them raised a daughter and five sons. With a father teaching Maths it's no surprise all five became 'Clerks" (Conveyancing, Stock Brokers, Bill Brokers and Wine Merchant) Their eldest also a William went on to become a Solicitor. The four census's between 1841 and 1871 show them living at different addresses around the Islington and then Hackney area. By 1871 age 70 he had retired and he died 1876. That is all I know about him. Any guidance on where I could find more greatly appreciated. Was there a major school in this area (maybe still is?) Hoping local knowledge can help but anything anyone can add to this story would be good. Thanks.

Hi everyone. I'd be grateful if anyone could help with deciphering any of this wedding cert. I know its between William Ward and Elizabeth Campion, 6th Dec 1886. he a bachelor, Labourer she a widow Charwomen. I can't read the address, Walker st. maybe? I thought her father was Robert William Doubleday but that doesn't look like "William" to me. Think it say deceased for his father? can't read the occupations of the two fathers.

Nottinghamshire / Son of Edward and Lucy Cheetham
« on: Monday 22 August 22 17:39 BST (UK)  »
Hope someone here may know the family or is cleverer than me at finding a name.
Easiest to say 1939 Register for 33 Amersham Rise, Aspley. Edward S (Samuel) Cheetham born 26 May 1896. wife is Lucy A (Agnes) Cheetham (Born Stone) 1 Jun 1901. They marry in 1927 and have a son. My wife met him when she was very young but cannot remember his name and I can't find a record for him other than the redacted entry on the 1939 Register. Do you know him, if still alive which the redaction suggests must be into his 90's.
Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Military type info after a name
« on: Tuesday 16 August 22 19:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone help interpreting what is written here, after the name of Isaac Cheetham. I suspect it's military rank or regiment, but can't make it out. It dates from 1872, a marriage certificate where he is the father of the bride and witness.

Nottinghamshire / Were children taken in to care in 1880’s?
« on: Thursday 17 September 20 10:03 BST (UK)  »
When I say “care” I mean the equivalent then. This in a way ties in with my question on the Balloon Court thread.
By the 1881 census my ancestors have had 3 children. In Balloon Court, Nottingham (demolished now firstly for Victoria railway station and nowadays Vitoria shopping center) they were living above the Mission Room of St. Stephens Church. I was already frustrated that my direct ancestor Alfred Henry Campion only 3 years old was missing from the census, in fact missing from the next two until he appears on his marriage certificate. The other two children are there but they too go missing from later census. Last night I found a Newspaper article that says parents Samuel and Elizabeth Campion were in court in 1883 for suffocating their 4th child, 3 weeks old, on what I think is her birth and death cert as “female” Campion. 3 months later Samuel dies, I can find no further evidence of wife Elizabeth maiden name Doubleday.
So do you think the 3 children were taken by the authorities at the time, where would I start looking? In that time would it have been the Workhouse? Any help as ever much appreciated
