Europe / Exploring French records for Italian immigrant ancestors
« on: Sunday 18 April 21 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I have just acquired my x2 Grandfather's birth record from his Italian hometown, Borgotaro.  On the record it also lists his Marriage details, which it seems occurred at the Italian consulate in Marseille, France in December 1878.   I had heard that my Italian ancestors spent time in Paris before moving to London, but did not know they lived/married here.

I am interested to find more records/details of them in France but don't know how/where to search French records. Any help for finding more about them or how/where I can search French records online would be greatly appreciated. Key details I have so far:

Domenico Sabini (b. 1852) marries - Maria Catterina Francesca Campomenoso (aged 20) in 1878 in Marseille France.  Maria's father Giovanni Battista Campomenoso is a witness at this wedding and also lives in Marseille at this time.

Thanks in advance.

Lanarkshire / Dawson - Fulton family arrangement - 1841 Census
« on: Saturday 27 February 21 10:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I've been tracing my Dawson heritage in Glasgow and getting back as far as my x3 Grandfather Patrick Dawson it states on various census records that he was originally from Ireland. However what's puzzling me is that on the 1841 census (which I am quite sure is him although other census state his birth as 1830), everyone in the household has the family name Fulton, and only he is listed as Dawson.  - I'm interested if there is a common explanation for this different family name e.g. adoption? illegitimacy? And how I might find out more about this.

Secondly, has anyone any tips for tracing back to Ireland if indeed this is where he's born?

Thanks

Hello,

My Great Grandfather is proving a bit of a mystery and I am eager to find out more about him and discover further evidence of records if possible.

He was Baptista Sabini on most records and was born in Holborn, London around 1890 to Italian immigrants, Domenico Sabini and Maria Campominosi. The strange thing is that he was a middle child, but while all his elder and younger siblings have birth certificates, he does not seem to have one (at least not one I can find online).

I have found a record of his baptism at St Peters Italian Church in Clerkenwell, which is in latin and lists his name as Joannes Baptista Antonius Sabini (Giovanni Baptista Anthony Sabini) with Domenico and Maria as parents. This baptism took place on 9th March 1890 and gives his birth date as 20th February 1890.

My grandmother recalled that his birth may have been acknowledged after the fact maybe at a court, but this is anecdotal evidence and I do not know whether a birth certificate or acknowledgement of his existence would have been produced from this that I can acquire.

Furthermore, I cannot find him in the Sabini household in the 1891 census, and the earliest I can find him after his baptism is in the 1901 census as 'Battista Sabini' in the household.  He doesn't appear on the 1911 census either, and its only his 1915 marriage to Rose Clifton that I pick up the trail again... so I'm eager to try and find out more about his early life, and particularly obtain his vital records and circumstances of birth.

Thanks

Europe / Domenico Sabini - Discovering Italian ancestors via France
« on: Friday 30 October 20 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have been tracing my family history in the UK and my Great Grandfather, Baptista Sabini was born to a Domenico Sabini and Maria who immigrated from Borgotaro / Borgo val di Taro, Italy, to Paris, France and finally London, UK in the latter 19th Century with at least two Sabini brothers (Andrew and Ottavio Sabini... and possibly also a Joseph Sabini).

I am trying to find records and information about Domenico Sabini and Maria prior to arriving in London but have found it much harder than finding UK records. I would really appreciate help in finding records for them (birth, marriage, travel), or indeed any evidence of their time on the continent (work, residences etc) - or advice where I could search for this information.

Domenico Sabini died in 1920 in London, but his birth is listed as Borgotaro Italy, with varying dates from 1852, 1853 through to 1857 in UK records - this is the key dates I have for him so far.

His wife Maria has a maiden surname which is spelled very differently across their childrens' birth/baptism records including; Camponimasi, Campomenosi, Campomenoso - so I am not sure if any of these are correct or hint at a known Italian surname. I believe she died in about 1928 in London. Her date of birth has been listed variously from 1863 (1891 census) to 1855 (1911 census).  She is listed as Italian and from Borgotaro on most documents. But I do not know if she met and married Domenico Sabini in Italy or France.

They were definitely in France in 1883 as this is when their first child Auguste/Augusto Sabini was born (in a place called Boulogne-Billancourt), and they had arrived in London by 1887 as this is when their daughter Catherine/Catterina was born in Holborn. However, I do not know anything about them prior to them living in the UK and would like to discovery more.

Thanks

London and Middlesex / Baptista Sabini 1890-1959 - Elusive Great Grandfather
« on: Thursday 29 October 20 10:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am trying to find records and details about my Great-Grandfather, who is quite elusive and is missing in several key records, and I'm struggling to discover more about him, particularly his early life.

He was the son of Italian immigrants Domenico Sabini and Maria Camponimasi/Campomenoso (this surname is spelt several ways on records).

Their first son Auguste/Augusto Sabini was born 1884 in France, and their later children including my Great Grandfather were born in London - and lived around the Holborn / Clerkenwell area.

My Great Grandfather was likely born Giovanni Battista Sabini, but had his name anglicized to Baptista which is how he appears on most records. He also went by Steve in later life, as his gravestone reads Steve Sabini.

My first mystery is that all of Domenico's British-born children are listed on GRO with birth certificates, apart from my Great Grandfather Baptista (who was a middle child).

I have discovered a Baptism record at St Peters Italian Church for a Joannes Baptista Antonius Sabini (Latin for Giovanni Battista Anthony Sabini) with the mothers maiden name Mariae Camponimasi, giving his DOB as 20 February 1890, but he doesn't seem to have a birth record.

Further to this he does not appear on the 1891 census in the Sabini household, nor can I find him on the 1911 census.

He is listed in the Sabini household as Battista Sabini (b. 1891) on the 1901 census. But the only evidence I have for him after 1901 is his marriage to Rose Clifton in 1915, his appearance on the 1939 register as Beptista Sabini (bizarrely his DOB is 20th Feb 1881 here), and his death in 1959.

It's possible these details of his whereabouts in early life are lost, but I'm new to family research so any additional assistance or advice beyond searching through the usual websites would be very helpful.

Thanks
