Warwickshire / Witton Cemetery, Birmingham - 1903 Burial Register Query
« on: Thursday 22 February 24 17:49 GMT (UK)  »

I have a copy of a burial taken from the burial register for Witton Cemetery, Birmingham - March 1903.

There are 3 columns - headed - "Special", "Consecrated" and "Unconsecrated".

My Ancestor has the letter "S" alongside his entry and under the column "Special".

Does anyone know what that refers to or has come across that before.

Durham / Neil Mellon Death 1875 - Injuries by ?Railway Engine - Coroners Inquest
« on: Saturday 07 October 23 17:10 BST (UK)  »

I am looking for further information for Neil Mellon whose death is registered in 1875 and was buried in Heworth, Durham on 8th March 1875.  Age given as 32.

There is a death registered in the first quarter of 1875 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland,  Neil Mallon aged 30.

I  received a copy of that death certificate but it has very little information relating to the deceased.

The information on the certificate is as follows:

Date: 6th March 1875 - Infirmary.   Deceased: Neil Mellon Male aged about 30 years.
Occupation: Labourer, Chemical Works.  Injuries by ?Railway Engine ?   ?
Certificate received by J T Hoyle, Coroner for Newcastle,  Inquest held 6th March 1875.

There is no further information as regards where he was living, marital status or family.

I have checked FindMyPast Newspapers to see if this was reported but cannot find anything.

I believe Neil Mallon could be my ancestor ancestor,  and nephew of my GG Grandfather Patrick Mellon who was living in Bill Quay at this time.

On the 1871 census my GG Grandparents Patrick and Bridget Mellon are living with their family at Heworth Lane with a Neil Mellon staying with them aged 28.

Do any members know where else I could search and why there isn't an address for him on the death certificate.

World War Two / Army Abbreviations
« on: Thursday 06 July 23 10:03 BST (UK)  »

I have recently received my fathers Army records (WW2). There are quite a lot of abbreviations - some I have been able to work out.

However does any member know what RPMHR is an abbreviation of, as I have been unable to find any information, and that in particular is noted on at least 4 entries on his record.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have received a copy of a death certificate for George William Davis aged 54 (8 Charles St.,Blackley) who died at Ancoats Hospital on 25th January 1918.

He suffered a tragic accident on 2nd January and an inquest was held into his death and a verdict of "accidental death" being recorded.

Does anyone know who I could contact to assertain if there is a copy of the inquest available.

I am looking for information on the above mentioned address - ?ownership - whether rented out as holiday home etc - in fact any information, but am at a loss as to where to look or find the information i am searching for.

John Preston (my grandfather) born 1836 Birmingham (and lived all his life in Birmingham) was living at this address in Blackpool in 1907 - according to the passenger list when his son names his father as next of kin when leaving for America.

I have John and his family through to 1901 (John is living in Birmingham - apart from wife/family in 1891 and 1901) but have  been unable to find what happened to him/his whereabouts after this date (1907).

In 1901 John Prestons son in law - Alfred Clarke and children are living at this same address in Blackpool -  Alfred Clarke married Johns daughter Selina in Birmingham where they lived prior to 1901 and where they returned to (as per 1911 census and electoral rolls.

I have no idea of any connection the family had to Blackpool or this address.

Any help would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

I am looking for a marriage between Mary Ann Adey and Alfred Shrive (my G Grandparents) and also a birth for Mary Ann in order ascertain her parents names.

Mary Ann Adey born 1848-1851 in Birmingham ?married Alfred Shrive after his first wife (Elizabeth Crumpton) died in 1873.

Mary Ann and Alfreds first child (Alfred Samuel Shrive) was born 1874 and the births of a further 7 children followed.

Mary Ann died in Birmingham in 1894.

I have found her with Alfred and their children on the 1881 and 1891 census living in
New Summer Street,  Birmingham,  but cannot find any other information for her prior to those census.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Warwickshire / Looking for Keziah Holley 1891 census
« on: Saturday 21 November 20 15:59 GMT (UK)  »

I have been searching for Keziah Holley (nee Round)  on the 1891 census without any luck and wondered if any member can find her or has any suggestions.

Keziah Round  (born Birmingham 1869) married George Holley (born 1865) in 1889 Birmingham - Bishop Ryder).

I can find her in census prior to her marriage -  1871 and 1881.

In 1901 she is with her husband and her siblings.

1911 with her children,  and her death in 1937 - all in Birmingham.

She may be with her siblings in 1891 - Sarah Round (born 1868) Benjamin Round (born 1872) and Annie Round (born 1875) as I can find no trace of them either.

She may even be staying with her step father - James Kempson (born 1847 Birmingham ) as I cannot find him either in 1891.

I have been searching for Mary Ann Kempson in the 1891 census without any luck.

She was born Mary Preston in 1834 Great Hampton Street, Birmingham (previous marriages to Charles Grainger 1859 and Benjamin Round 1862) then James Kempson 1882.

At some stage in her life she adds Ann as a middle name.

On her marriage certificate to James Kempson in 1882 his age is 35, her age is shown as 39 putting her date of birth around 1843 - maybe she didn't want to tell him she was several years older than him as her true age would have been 48.

On the GRO and Ancestry I have found deaths for two Mary Ann Kempson - both  Dec Q 1887 in Aston - aged 45 (birth around 1842) - but with different reference numbers - is this a coincidence that there were 2 Mary's who both died at the same time of year, both the same age and lived in Aston.

Could the death have been registered twice for some reason?

Here are the details  : Vol 6D Page 166 Aston  and Vol 6D Page 170 Aston.

I have found a burial for a Mary Kempson in December 1887 at Witton Cemetery.

Warwickshire / ?Initials (abbreviation) in the margin of a burial register
« on: Friday 23 October 20 18:26 BST (UK)  »

My GG Grandmother Mary Harper died in 1875 and is buried at St Michaels Anglican Church, Stoke, Warwickshire.

In the left hand margin of the burial register (on FindMyPast) it looks like someone has written C.P or possibly C & P by her name.

Would anyone know what those initials mean.

There is also a burial a little further down the page with the same initials alongside the deceased name.
