I have been trying to trace what happened to a man after the war, but am getting nowhere.
I have a copy of his Service Record and he was a HGV driver in 136 M E Coy Royal Engineers, discharged in 1946.
I also have a copy of a letter sent to a woman in The Netherlands in 1948 from a woman who was (apparently) the sister of this soldier, she was writing to say he had re-enlisted but had been killed defusing mines in 1948. She also states that he wasn't married, but he was, with 2 children.
If a soldier re-enlisted I would have thought the details would have been in his Service Records, but they aren't.
Surely a soldier who had been driving lorries wouldn't be given the job of defusing mines.
I know that a lot of things happened during and after the war and my first reaction was that he wanted to disappear, but then I wondered whether some of his record is missing.
He gave an address when he was discharged in 1946 and according to the Electoral Roll he was registered there in 1947 but not later, so that doesn't help.
Can anyone offer any advice?.
