Derbyshire / White family dairy farmers Norton Lees Derbyshire/Sheffield
« on: Thursday 21 October 10 15:52 BST (UK)  »
This is a difficult one to know where to post as this family were born and lived in Norton Derbyshire till it became Sheffield Yorkshire.

I am looking for any one related to the Whites of Norton Lees Lane who I believe were dairy farmers.

I know this is a long shot. I am researching the history of Bishops House and believe the Whites were tennant farmers there. Census records do not give exact address but a descendant has suggested they lived there.

Can anyone help me? I am looking for the burial place of Robert Blythe, former abbot of Thorney Abbey, also former Bishop of Down and Connor. He died in 1547 and was buried in Whittlesea. But where was he buried? Is there a monument to him?

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Blythe family in Hull
« on: Thursday 06 May 10 19:46 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to solve a puzzle. Found a mention of a letter of someone from Hull in about 1920s who said they were direct descendant of Blythes from Norton Lees Derbyshire now Sheffield. They pointed out an ancestor called Captain Richard Blyth who was in the east india company and then in the Royal Navy in the Anglo Dutch Wars. about 1723-1749.  I can't find any relative in Hull or  and Richard Blythe of the right age in Norton Lees. Does anyone know of any Blythe descendants in Hull?

If you are descended from the Blythe family of Norton Lees, could you get in touch with me? I am trying to write a history of the Blythes of Norton Lees. I am part of a group who is trying to preserve and protect Bishops House in Norton Lees (now part of Sheffield) This house was built by the Blythes in 1500.

Derbyshire / Nicholas Bagshaw How is he Kin?
« on: Saturday 06 March 10 00:02 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out what kin Nicholas Bagshaw was to William Blythe. Richard Blythe lived in Norton Lees from about 1480 and had a servant Nicholas Bagshaw who is described as servant and kinsman in a chancery record at Richards death in 1524. But although I can find a Nicholas Bagshaw who started the Bagshaw line in Norton I can't find any link to the Blythes.  Richard Blythe married a Katherine of Birchet. Richards father married a Saffrey Austen from Birley, half sister to Thomas of Rotherham. Does anyone know of a family tree for the Bagshaws so I can find out how they were Kin. The only other family names that might be connected are Bright, Gill, Selioak and Parker.

Derbyshire / Blythes of Norton Lees. Need help please
« on: Monday 01 March 10 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
I need some help as I am trying to write article about history of Bishops House and the Blythe Family. The present history given by the museums is so sparse as to be boring. They are  threatening to close the house a unique tudor farmhouse which was built by a prosperous farmer not a manor house and no additions after the civil war.

I know that William Blythe of Norton Lees married Saffrey Austin (half sister to Archbishop Thomas Rotherham) and they had three sons Richard, John and Geoffrey. Richard moved to live in Norton (not sure when but died there in 1524.) The house was built about 1500 and William Blythe was born there in 1502. Was this Richard's son or was there also a younger brother? Anyone know of any records at Norton at this date or any Burials of likely relatives?

Europe / Bullivant origins your opinion please
« on: Saturday 06 February 10 17:16 GMT (UK)  »
I have seen the Bullivant name in  Flanders and the Loire Valley. I also saw the name de Bullevant in France. Is it mainly a Flemish name or a French name. Also has anyone heard of a Flemish armourer in 17th century called Bullivant?
