Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Great grandparents burial site - Gent
« on: Monday 11 March 24 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
I’m after any suggestions of how to find the graves of my great grandparents Everard Gent 1896-1962 and Ethel Maud Gent 1896-1963.   They both lived in Shepshed Leicestershire at the time of their deaths.   I’ve searched the local cemetery and the online grave sites with no luck.  They did live previously in Whitwick and the Coalville area.  I’m stuck with where to go from here ???

A friend has recently found a stack of what appear to be love letters sent in 1954 from Tony (no surname) to a Miss JCP Matthews In Southampton in a junk shop.

Any tips on how we could go about tracing any remaining relatives ?

Leicestershire / 1st wife and child
« on: Friday 16 June 23 18:04 BST (UK)  »
Maybe a sensitive subject but found out that someone on my tree, whose now deceased and had no children with his 2nd wife, did have a child with his first.

Sadly both his first wife and child died in the WW2 during an air raid.    I have no name for the first wife nor the child.  However I feel it’s important that they aren’t forgotten and should take their place on the tree.

How is it best to start to look for them?   The person was born in 1918 so one would assume roughly speaking you be looking for a marriage between 1938 and the end of the war.  Apparently they died in a air raid so the child would
Have been a young child.

His 2nd marriage was in 1949.

Suffolk / Peck & Gents
« on: Monday 08 May 23 21:49 BST (UK)  »
So I have Robert Gent born in Suffolk in 1800.

He married Sarah Allwood in Shepshed Leicestershire 1819.  They have several children the last being born in 1837.  By 1841 there’s no sign of him
In Leicestershire.  No death record nothing.

However in 1841 there’s a Robert Gent living in North cove Suffolk.  Close by is Hannah peck and her children

Mary Ann Peck, Hannah Peck, Kate Peck and George Peck.

Following through to 1851 & 1861 no sign of Robert listed as living with them.  However I believe he may have been a carter so could’ve been travelling.

Later we have a Mary Ann Hannah Peck GENT getting married.   There’s also George Peck changing to George Gent in later census.

Is it possible that Robert had two families potentially travelling between the two ?   When his children with Sarah Gent get married Robert is named as father and not deceased.   Although a Robert gent is buried at north cove Suffolk.

Any help sorting through this tangle or just opinions are great fully received ?

Leicestershire / Annie Perkins - what happened next?
« on: Wednesday 03 May 23 09:05 BST (UK)  »
I had help in finding out that Joseph  Thomas  Perkins married Annie Corah in June 1900.

In 1908 Joseph Thomas, Annie & their son Joseph Sidney all sailed for a new life in Canada.   Sadly Joseph senior died only six months later and Annie & their son returned to England sometime between 1909 & 1911.   As I’ve found them living back in Shepshed in 1911 with Annie’s brother Thomas  Corah and family in Brick kiln Lane Shepshed.

After that I can’t find anything to do with Annie?   No death or burial records nothing????  I am wondering if she remarried possibly but I’m struggling to find anything.

Her son later know just as Sidney remained in the local area and was a Methodist preacher never marrying.

Annie was born circa 1875 in Shepshed.  I believe her parents were William and Hannah Corah.

I’d love to solve the mystery of what happened to Annie ?????

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Jane Bexon / Hill
« on: Thursday 02 March 23 22:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have Henry Bexon who was born in Shepshed, Leicestershire in 1841 his parents were John & Mary

He married his first wife in 1859 Hannah Blackwell.  She died in 1872 then he went on to marry his 2nd wife Jane Hill who was born in 1858.

I can’t confirm where she was born as her place of birth changes through cen. Documents from Shepshed to Hanby ????    I am struggling to find a birth certificate at all for her.   I am wondering if she was married before and if Hill was even her maiden name?    Any suggestions as I’ve tied myself up in knots over this !   Thanks

Leicestershire / James widdowson
« on: Sunday 04 December 22 10:03 GMT (UK)  »
I’m after some advice regarding the military service of my great grandfather James Widdowson.

James was born in Loughborough circa 1890 or 1891 (there is another man same name born in Hathern  which is the nearby town and I can’t tell which birth date is my GGF)

When he married Frances Davidson 24th April 1916 it stated his residence as Southsea.   Research has lead me to find Southsea Portsmouth was a Military training base.   I’ve tried countless times to find any military records for James any tips or ideas gratefully received

Leicestershire / Elizabeth Lakin
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 13:26 BST (UK)  »
I have Elizabeth Lakin, born circa 1873 in Sheepshed, as the daughter of William Lakin (3 May 1853) and Hannah Lakin nee Cotton (29 March 1852) in my tree.

William and Hannah married in a registry office on 8 Sept 1873.

I have found a copy of a christening for Elizabeth Lakin listing William  Lakin as Stepfather and Hannah Cotton as mother dated 19 March 1876.

I know Hannah was Cotton when she was born and is on numerous census entries as such.

My question is do you think that Elizabeth is the illegitimate daughter of Hannah and another man and that William took her on as his own child?  he married her mother the same year (1873) as she was born.
