Graveyards and Gravestones / Meaning of leaf symbol on cemetery stone

This is a stone beautifully carved with a leaf on a thick stalk, and we are wondering what it symbolizes. It is located in an old family cemetery in upstate New York next to the stones of two adult men, a father and son, who both died in 1833. The family was originally from England. Thank you for your help and advice.
