Down / Wilkins (Wilkinson); Jeffers (Jeffares); Matier; Rice, Edwards
« on: Sunday 30 October 16 19:56 GMT (UK)  »
For some years I have been trying to reconcile some seemingly irreconcilable family data and would value some help.
Henry, Edgar, Knox, Wilkins, my Grandfather, was born 1882 Dungannon. His father was Henry, Edgar, Knox Wilkins was a Seaman and his mother was Sarah Jane Jeffers from Carlow. Despite extensive research I have been unable to discover a marriage between Henry & Sarah. Henry senior is absent from the 1901 & 1911 Census where Sarah describes herself as a Widow and uses the surname ‘Wilkinson’ (1901) and Wilkins (1911). In records Henry senior’s occupation is variously described as ‘a Seaman’; ‘an Army Colour Sgt; & a Staff Sgt Militia. A primary address for Sarah was 8 Palmerston Road, Belfast.
In Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast there is a family grave for Sarah above d1926, Violet Edith Edwards d1920, her mother Violet Sadie Edwards d1920 (nee Rice – father a Sea Captain) and Annie Wilkins d1916 (nee Matier) my Grandfather’s wife who, along with her family were associated with the Salvation Army, Dee Street, Belfast. A primary address for Wesley Edwards (m1906) and family was 2 Moorgate Street, Belfast.
Family tradition and some memorabilia inform me that the Wilkins & Rice families were related in some way – but how? I have discovered a Sarah Jane Jeffers married to a Thomas Rice 1871 in St Paul’s C of I, Dublin North but haven’t proved a connection with my family. Possibly this was a first marriage for Sarah Jane Jeffers?

Antrim Completed Look up Requests / Bog Road, Pottinger
« on: Thursday 15 December 11 15:42 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across an address for a relative in the 1911 Census - Bog Road, Pottinger (no house number). However this street doesn't seem to appear in the Belfast Street Directories around the time. Does anyone have any idea whereabouts Bog Road might have been in (East?) Belfast? The name suggests somewher near the River Lagan.

Thank you

Down / Hillsborough NI
« on: Saturday 03 May 08 16:48 BST (UK)  »
I have recently been at PRONI searching through some Hillsborough C of I birth records (e.g. MIC/1/63A/1 - 1830s and 1840s).

One of the things I noticed was that the Register appeared to just refer to 'Parish of Hillsborough, Diocese Down'. There seemed to be no division or reference (that I noticed) to individual churches e.g. 'St Johns Chapel of Ease', St Malacy's' or 'St James Chapel of Ease'. The individual records do mention the specific Hillsborough townland where the birth/baptism took place but not the particular church.

Can anyone explain this please?

Thank you.

United States of America / Wilkins - Jeffers
« on: Tuesday 28 August 07 20:13 BST (UK)  »
My wife's grandfather Henry Edgar Knox Wilkins (b 17 Jun 1882 d 21 Jun 1949 in Belfast) was born in Dungannon, Co Tyrone, Ireland to Henry Edgar Knox Wilkins (no details known) and Sarah Jane Wilkins nee Jeffers from Co Carlow, Ireland (b c1851 d 3 Jul 1929 in Belfast).

We have no further details about the great grandparents but my wife can remember her late father talking about an American connection - possibly a brother or sister of her great grandfather.

We were wondering if these slim details might 'connect' with someone else's FT and thus help us get some more Wilkins information?

Thank you.

John

Down / Campbell Bingham Drumgooland
« on: Friday 08 June 07 19:55 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather David Campbell was born in Shannaghan in 1890. I understand Shannaghan is an 'unattached townland' of the Parish of Newry attached to the Parish of Annaclone (Katesbridge seems to be in Shannaghan). My grandfather's parents were John Campbell from Shannaghan and Harriet Jane Bingham (or Bigham?) from Moneyslane in Drumgooland Parish. John's father was George Campbell and Harriet Jane's was John Bingham. Despite living most of their family life in Belfast, one brother of my grandfather was buried in Closkelt while his mother, another brother and sister were buried in Drumadonald near Moneyslane. All the above locations appear to be in the same general vicinity so it seems that originally the Campbells and Binghams must have lived relatively close to one another.

Obviously I'm trying to source more information about George Campbell (or John Bingham) so if the research of anyone out there overlaps mine or if you can help me in any way I'd love to here from you.

Thank you.

Antrim Completed Look up Requests / GRO Belfast
« on: Saturday 31 March 07 11:20 BST (UK)  »
Within the last year or more we have applied for a number of birth/death record searches (£5.50ea) from the General Registry Office Belfast. In reply we received photocopies of the relevant birth/death certificates where they were found. Two recent applications, however, have resulted in just a letter with a summary of the details from the registry (there was an attachment we could return with a further £5.50 for a copy of the actual certificate). Is anyone aware that GRO Belfast have changed their procedure? The latest two applications were in relation to a birth and subsequent adoption - could this have made the difference?

Carlow / Sarah Jane Jeffers born County Carlow
« on: Friday 09 March 07 18:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have discovered that my great grandmother Sarah Jane Jeffers was born in Co. Carlow (from the 1911 census).  Unfortunately I only know the county and not any townland or parish.
She married Henry Wilkins(don't have any info on him or the date of their marriage) and my grandfather Henry, Edgar, Knox Wilkins was born in Dungannon in 1882.
She was living in Belfast in 1909 with her son Henry and she died in Belfast in 1929.
I was wondering if anyone out there would happen to know of the Jeffers family from Co. Carlow, and could perhaps add any information about the family?

Down / Drumadonald Cemetery, Moneyslane.
« on: Monday 26 June 06 16:49 BST (UK)  »
After a couple of site visits I have been unable to locate a Bingham or possibly Campbell grave in the above cemetery. Some headstones are hard to read and there may also be unmarked graves.  My great grandmother Harriet Jane Campbell nee Bingham (d. Dec 1941) her son Alexander (d. Feb 1949) and her daughter Margaret (Maggie) Campbell (a spinster d. March 1955) are all recorded in newspaper obituaries as buried in Drumadonald cemetery.

Banbridge District Council took responsibility for the graveyard in the 1970's but have limited records so have been unable to help.

Can anyone advise if this cemetery was connected to a Church where I could possibly check records? Is it possible to acquire a layout plan of a cemetery? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

South Africa / Wilson - Belfast to South Africa & Phoenix Foundry JHB
« on: Sunday 07 May 06 15:57 BST (UK)  »
In trying to trace my Family Tree I am trying to make contact with relatives - the decendants of brothers David, William, John, and James Wilson who left East Belfast around the late 1920s or early 1930s to live in South Africa. Their father was David Wilson and mother Elizabeth Agnes Wilson nee Larmour.
