London and Middlesex / Bedford St, London. Newspaper/Magazine Offices
« on: Sunday 22 April 12 10:02 BST (UK)  »
Hoping someone will be able to help!

In the 1930's my Grandmother worked for the Lady magazine, at 39 Bedford St.  While she worked there, she was photographed and appeared on a magazine cover of a publication that had the next door offices.

I believe this was in the mid 1930's.  I don't know the name of the publication, and was hoping someone could look in a street directory for me, or have some suggestions about other ways I might find out what it was.

Thanks

Julie

Occupation Interests / London Clockmakers
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 15:04 GMT (UK)  »
Just discovered one of my ancestors, Thomas DeLasalle, was a clockmaker in London in the 1780's.  Found a clock by him in a Bonhams catalogue and a mention in an Old Bailey trial  ;D

Does anyone know if he would have been a member of a Guild or suchlike? And,  if so, ifthere would be records available?

Thanks

Gloucestershire / Price Family in Bristol
« on: Sunday 29 May 11 10:42 BST (UK)  »
???  Can anyone help me with this brickwall?

I am trying to trace the family of Mary Price who is my direct ancestor.

John Thomas Hooker married Mary Price on April 1844 Bristol.

Her father was Edward Price a labourer.

I have plenty of information on John and Mary after their marriage.

Mary was born about 1823 in Bristol and John Thomas was born about 1818 in London.

In 1851 they were living at Anchor Lane Bristol in the parish of St Augustine The Less.

In 1861 they were living in London.

Their children were named: Mary Emily, John Thomas, Edward George, Margaret,  Louisa and Ellen.

I have found a likely Edward Price on the 1841 and 1851 census, living in Bristol.  He was born in Ireland. His wife is Margaret and his children at home are Rosanna, Ellen and Eliza.

Can't be sure he's the correct one though, and cannot find any of these children later.

Any suggestions or help gratefully received.   ;D

« on: Saturday 14 May 11 07:33 BST (UK)  »
I believe my Great great Grandfather was buried in Finchley Cemetary.  He died in 1918.

Would this be East Finchley Cemetary and does anyone know where records of graves would be kept?

Thanks

United States of America / Margaret Jamieson b New York 1831
« on: Sunday 02 January 11 08:05 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where or if I can find a birth/baptism for Margaret Jamieson b about 1831 New York?

In 1851 she was living in Tionesta, Venango, Pennsylvania.

1850 US Census: home in 1850: Tionesta, Venango, Pa.
Wm Jameson, 42, farmer,b Scotland.
Ellen Jameson, 41 b Scotland.
Margaret Jameson, (1831) 19, b New York.
Catharine Jameson, 17, b Scotland.
 Ellen Jameson, 11,(1839) b Scotland.
Quintin Jameson, 7, b Scotland.
Cyril W Jameson, 4, b Pa.
David Noble, 58, b Massachusetts.

But this family were living in Scotland in 1841:

1841 Muir Houses, Gorbals, Lanarkshire.
William Jamieson, 30, cotton dresser, b Scotland.
Helen Jamieson, 30, b Scotland.
Catherine Jamieson, 8, b Lanarkshire.
Helen Jamieson, 2, b Scotland.

and didn't enter the US until 1845:

New York Passenger Lists:  Ship Harward. Port of Departure Glasgow. Arrival date 11 Oct 1845. Wm Jamieson, thirty six(b c1809) dresser,b Scotland.  Mrs Jamieson, b thirty five (c1815) wife b Scotland. Catherine Jamieson, twelve (b c 1833) children b Scotalnd. Helen Jamieson, six ( b c1839.) children b Scotland  Quintin Jamieson, age illegible possibly 6m, children b Scotland.

The only other (probable) record I have of Margaret Jamieson is an immigration record.  This includes William Jamieson's (above) mother, brother and sister.

New York Passenger Lists. Ship name: American. Port of Departure Liverpool. Date of arrival 22 Oct 1838. Catherine Jamieson 64, Scotland b c1774. Jessie Jamieson, 22 Scotland, b c1816. Gilbert Jamison, 19 merchant, Scotland b c 1819. ?Margaret Jamieson,10, united states, b c1828

Another brother, Cassiluss, entered the US in about 1836, and his father emmigrated in 1837.

At least two other brothers also went to the US.  Gilbert and Robert.  Robert shows up as a widower on the 1850.

Could he have been in the country early enough to have been Margaret's father?

Why, when and how did Margaret travel to Scotland and then back again?

Going round in circles on this one. :o Any suggestions appreciated. :D

England / Completely confused and at a dead end
« on: Friday 18 June 10 19:50 BST (UK)  »
Just when you think you're getting the hang of this...

Mignon Vansittart married Edwin Vansittart in Bedford in 1919.  I already have Mignon's tree sorted.

Edwin is a bit of a puzzle.  He died in 1921 aged 24 in Lambeth.
Marriage cert arrived today.  Had been told that he had changed his name to Vansittart by deedpoll, but haven't managed to get sight of this document.

No sign of Edwin Charles Vansittart birth or census returns or anything, and this is a well recorded family.

Marriage cert states Edwin Charles Vansittart age 25, bachelor, accountant, 10 Bank Buildings, Bedford.  Father Edwin Charles MORRIS, deceased, civil servant.

Imagining he changed his name to please hs wife, but having trouble tracking down an Edwin Charles Morris of uncertain birth date.

Any help appreciated. Complete brick wall.

Thanks in advance  :)
