Afternoon to you all

My nanny Ida Maclean from Benbecula died a day after my father was born in 1931, age 28, and we have never been able to locate a photo of his mum until now! A cousin has located what we genuinely believe is a photo of nan, after much family searching.  The photo isn't in great shape but is there any chance the creases could be erased somehow so that we can then frame her? Any help with this would be immensely appreciated. The original scan was 990kb so I used "paint" to resize down to below 500mb.
Thank you.  McVitie. :)

Morning to you

In this most poignant of weeks, I recently obtained the only photo of my gt grandfather Joseph Eakins, of Royal Irish Rifles, who was killed in action at the Somme on 6/9/16, from an old Belfast Newspaper taken at the time he went to France in 1914.  Being the only photo we have of him is so precious, but I was wondering if he could be freshened up in any way, as the photo does have some pixels showing from the print?
Most grateful for any kind help.
Kind regards

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Gt Granddad - Pilot WW1
« on: Wednesday 19 November 08 15:04 GMT (UK)  »

Hi everyone

I have just received the attached photo of my gt granddad Arthur Jex, which was taken in a German prisoner of war camp in Sept 1918. He was shot down over France and captured (hence the strange slippers he's wearing!)

I'm not sure if the size is OK, but I'd be most grateful if anyone could try adding some colour to Arthur for me?

Kind Regards

World War One / Gt Grandfather Arthur Jex - pilot WW1
« on: Wednesday 19 November 08 11:34 GMT (UK)  »

Good morning

I have just received a photo (the first and only one I have) of my great grandfather Arthur Jex from a great Uncle of mine.

To my utter surprise it shows Arthur in what appears to be a pilots uniform, which is well and truly a surprise to my family as we have a record of his discharge papers from the Army in 1914, due a  leg injury.

He must have then decided to join the Flying Corps instead, but  I would never have imagined we had a pilot in the family - no one ever mentioned this. :o

Can anyone help with identification of the attached photo - I don't even know who/what he served with!

Kind regards

McVitie

Dublin / Joseph Eakins - birth records Kingstown
« on: Thursday 06 November 08 14:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello to you,

My gt grandfather, Joseph Eakins, died on 16/09/1916 at the Somme, part of the 7th Bat Royal Irish Rifles. I've not been able to obtain his age when he died as he only has a commemorative plaque at Thiepval, France. So I have no details of his parents or his siblings ???.

All I know from my late nan, is that Joseph was born in Kingstown, Dublin, and later moved to Belfast where he married a Mary Devlin.

If any one would be so kind to see if there is a birth record/year for him in Dublin, I'd be most indebted to you.

Kind regards

Ross & Cromarty / Kenneth Macrae born c1800 Glenshiel
« on: Tuesday 28 October 08 13:21 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon to you,

I wonder if I may ask for some guidance please...

I've recently obtained the death cert from SP for my 3x gt grandfather, Kenneth Macrae, who died in Benbecula 1880, a widower, aged 80, (b. 1800). His parents are shown as Angus Macrae and Mary MacLennan, both deceased, and his wife was Mary Morrison.

I've not managed to locate anything on his parents, although I'm pretty sure they are both natives of Rosshire, as Macraes and MacLennans often appear  as names in the locality, but I'm trying really to track down his wife Mary Morrison's roots.

All I know of her is that she must have died before the 1851 census for Harris, (where they had moved to) as Kenneth was a widower. After many attempts to track down her death or marriage certs on SP, I've hit the proverbial brick wall. Their first daughter, also Mary, was born in Kintail, 1831, so I imagine Mary Morrison was native to the county too. If anyone can help me in tracing her, I'd be very much grateful :).
Cheers
Mcvitie.

Inverness / Unusual christian name?
« on: Thursday 28 August 08 12:27 BST (UK)  »

Hello to you,

I recently came across my Macdonald ancestors in the 1841 census in Kilmore, Skye.  Ronald Macdonald (aged 54) and his wife Margaret (aged 49, m.s - Macdonald) named one of their daughters 'Binny', a name I have never come across in all my scottish ancestors, and wondered if anyone out there could shed some light on how such a name may have been chosen as it's not one I would associate with the highlands.

Kind regards

Mcvitie
