Australia / William Hutchins convict
« on: Sunday 18 November 18 20:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi:

I'm trying to sort out some information on a convict named William Hutchins.  He was convicted in 1821 at the Surrey Quarter Sessions and transported to Australia aboard the ship Adamant.  New South Wales, Australia, Gaol Description and Entrance Books, 1818-1930 on Ancestry.com.au says that his native place was Warwickshire. However, his Certificate of Freedom in 1828 lists his native place - which I think means birthplace - as Lymington, which is in Hampshire.  He was ill during the voyage of the Adamant and the ship's Surgeon, James Hamilton, gave William's age as 27 in his journal, giving a rough birth year of 1794.  However, his certificate of freedom lists his birth year as 1799. I would guess that both are probably estimates, but which location would be right for his birthplace? Thanks.

Kent / Questionable SHILLING marriage 1747
« on: Tuesday 17 October 17 03:35 BST (UK)  »
I'm helping a gentleman in California with the surname Shilling trace his paternal tree and I'm looking for advice on a Shilling marriage in 1747.  I've come across a Shilling family tree on a website called Our Family Tree:  https://www.ourfamtree.org/index.php?loggedout  In the tree, there is a marriage between Thomas Shilling and Elizabeth Rowe in 1747 in Bethersden.  However, when I checked the Bethersden Bishop's Transcripts for the period of 1746-49, I couldn't find the marriage.  These are the marriages that I found:

Bethersden Marriages – Bishop’s Transcripts   Lady Day to Lady Day (March 25)

1746-1747

Dec 29 1746    John Gold of Ashford and Mary Kemp of this parish by Banns
Jan 29 1747    John Bissenden and Eleanor Marsh both of the parish of Kingsnorth by license
Feb 18 1747    Francis Whitfield and Sarah Wilmott both of this parish by license

1747-1748

April 23 1747    Robert Gladdish of Biddenden and Ann Andrews of this parish
Oct 1 1747       Thomas Else and Sarah Harris both of this parish
Oct 2 1747       William Mepham of the parish of Little Chart and Ann Hopper of this parish
Oct 27 1747     William Brown of the parish of High Halden and Elizabeth Stephenson of this parish
Dec 26 1747     John Bates of the parish of Ulcombe and Mary George of this parish

1748-1749

Sept 30 1748   Edward Brown and Elizabeth Jacob
Nov 10 1748   John Brunger and Martha Brown
Jan 1 1749   James Davis and Sarah Weston
Jan 22 1749   Thomas Russel and Sarah Horton

I've checked Ancestry, Family Search, Find My Past and Free Reg for a marriage between Thomas Shilling and Elizabeth Rowe from 1740 to 1750 and came up empty.  I did, however, find a marriage between Thomas Shilling and Elizabeth LEWIS in Warehorne on April 11, 1748.

Should I just disregard the Shilling/Rowe marriage? This was the period before the Hardwicke Marriage Act of 1754.

Thanks.

World War One / Charles Nicholson Royal Engineers
« on: Thursday 30 June 16 19:40 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out information on my maternal grandfather's military records. His name was Charles William Neville Nicholson, and he was born on December 30, 1878 in Aldershot, Hampshire. I believe that he was a sapper.  He was born in England but grew up in Ireland. I can find him on the 1901 Irish census, but I can't find him on either the 1911 Irish or UK census.  He married on December 18, 1919 in Croydon, Surrey but the marriage record just lists him as a soldier.

I have a few possibilities for a regimental number:
Charles Nicholson, born 1880, 476th Field Company, No 5th Depot Company, sapper, regimental number 67807
Charles Nicholson, Sapper, regimental number 13144
Charles Nicholson, Transport 235 Sapper, regimental numbers 400752, 176825.

In the 1939 Register, he was living on Granville Road, Limpsfield, Surrey, Godstone R.D. and his profession was given as highway lengthman.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Thomas Hawthorne
« on: Tuesday 09 February 16 08:21 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find death information for a Thomas Hawthorn. I think that he died in 1910, but I want to confirm the information.  I know that his wife, Dora Hawthorne nee Mick, died on February 11, 1920. This is her obituary:

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=AS19200212.2.105&cl=CL2.1920.02.12&e=-------10--1----0--

She's buried in Waikaraka Cemetery, Auckland, New Zealand.

They were married in Canada in 1866 and emigrated to New Zealand sometime after that.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Devon / Missing Frayne burial North Molton
« on: Sunday 01 February 15 22:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi:

I have two baptisms for a Peter Frayne, both in North Molton:

Peter Frayne baptized September 12, 1819 son of John and Mary, husbandman
Peter Frayne baptized February 11, 1827 son of John & Mary, innkeeper

Usually if there are two children of the same name in the same family, it means that the earlier child had died. However, I haven't been able to find a burial for the earlier Peter Frayne between 1819 and 1827.

The only Peter Frayne buried in this time frame was a Peter Frayne in 1825, aged 77, who would have been the child's great uncle.

There appears to be only one marriage that applies to these baptisms:

John Frayne married Mary Gough on November 15 in North Molton.

I have several questions about this:

Was there any fee for a burial? Could the family have not been able to pay for a burial?
Or would it have been a case of no room in the cemetery?
Could the child been buried in the family plot, or buried in the same coffin as someone else, and the burial just not recorded?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Armed Forces / Nicholson of 41st foot. Stationed in Ireland
« on: Sunday 16 November 14 18:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi:

I know that the 41st foot, which became part of the Welch Regiment, was stationed in Ireland during the mid to late 1840's and early 1850s. The regiment was stationed at Black Rock barracks near or in Drumshanbo, County Leitrim then at Clarecastle, in County Clare, and at later periods in Dublin.

I'm trying to trace an ancestor named William Nicholson, aka William Nicholls.  He married Johanna Kavanagh on October 8, 1846 in Drumshanbo.  I have a copy of the marriage record.  His oldest son Charles was born on January 25, 1848 in Kilrush, County Clare.  I also have a copy of his birth certificate, part of which got cut off, but lists his parents' names.  I did a search through FindMyPast in Chelsea Pensioner records and found a discharge for a William Nicholls, regimental number 1463 of the 41st foot on July 29, 1881.  Cause of discharge was listed as invalid.  Service toward pension and Good Conduct Pay was 7 years, 351 days.  Service towards limited engagement was 10 years, 341 days.

His son Charles also joined the regiment when they were stationed in Jamaica. Charles first joined the 2nd West India Regiment on July 9, 1859 and immediately transferred into the 41st foot.  He gave his age as 13, but he was actually 11.  His regimental number was 326.

The 41st foot lost their drummer, who was named McCarberry, when it was stationed in Jamaica. The drummer died on August 1, 1857.  When Charles joined, he became their drummer. I very luckily have copies of his army pay book.  One of the pages list his living next kin as of October 8, 1882.  His father is not listed, so I think that means his father would have died by that time. I'm trying to find other documentation on William. I'm not sure if he would be listed on the 1881 UK census.

Gloucestershire / William Passmore & Piety Stone
« on: Tuesday 22 October 13 23:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi:

I'm looking for information on William Passmore and Piety Stone.  I know they probably married prior to 1850. The question is where? As of the 1851 census, they were married and living in the parish of St. John the Evangelist in Clifton.  By the 1861 census, he was a widower.  By the 1871 census, he had died.  He was a shoe maker by occupation.  They had two children, both born in Clifton - Philip William in 1850, and Mary Slader Passmore in 1852.  I haven't been able to find their marriage.  I've checked the non-conformist records website and came up empty.  Could she have gone by a different name?  He was born in 1813 in North Molton, Devon and baptized Church of England.  She was born in 1812 in Stogumber, Somerset - also baptized Church of England. Are they buried in Clifton?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
