England / John Jones (born c.1861 Leicester)
« on: Saturday 16 June 18 21:21 BST (UK)  »
I am currently searching for my great-great grandfather, John JONES.

The earliest confirmed record I have for him is his 1887 marriage to Caroline Ann WEEKS, in Chatham, Kent.  I can then trace him through from the 1891 census to the 1911 census, where he and his family resided in Kent.

From the census, he is born in abt 1861 in Leicester, Leicestershire.  From his marriage certificate his father is apparently also called John.

What I am searching for is about his life prior to his marriage in 1887, and when he died.

England / Who is my great great grandmother
« on: Friday 17 March 17 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies for this super long post, but I am going to try and including/mention as much support material/sources as I have found to date to back up what I am researching.

Anyway, let’s start with the basic information – I am researching my great-great grandparents on my mum’s mum side.  Specifically, I am trying to workout once and for all who my great-great grandmother is.

My great grandfather, Horace Bailey, was born c. 1898 in Birmingham, Warwickshire.  I say circa, because his birth was never registered (apparently mum was sick and dad was away in the military so they ‘never got round to it’).  I have a birthdate of 26th September 1898, which was the date of birth he gave when he ensilsted in the Royal Marines.

Horace married in 1924, to Doris Margaret Kate Hoare.  He gave his father as John Charles Bailey, who’s occupation was a gas fitter.  (more details of this below)

I have search the National Archives, Horace and his son Ken went to Chatham House, when it held the archives, to try and find his certificate but never found it.  The was a Sydney Horace Bailey, born 17th December 1898 in Birmingham, but that is not him – his (Sydney Horace) parents are Philip Henry Bailey and Ada Bailey formerly Mason.  Philip was a Brass Worker (Journeyman).

In 1894, I have a marriage between William Henry Bailey (20 year old bachelor) and Annie Martin (26 year old spinster). The marriage took place at the Register Office in Birmingham, in the county of Birmingham.  William gave his father has John Charles Bailey and Annie gave hers as Joseph Martin.  William and John Charles gave their occupations as gas fitter, Joseph was a chandelier fitter.  William was residing at Curzon Hall, Suffolk Street, and Annie at 58 Suffolk Street, Birmingham.  Witnesses were Elizabeth Brown and Charles Derwitt.

The earliest record I have for Horace is the 1901 census.  William, his wife Lizzie and Horace are boarding with the Suckling family in Basall Heath, Birmingham, England. The record reference is RG13, Piece 2813, Folio 137, Page 7

I'm trying to find out who the mother of my great grandfather is?

My great grandfather was born in 1898, in Birmingham, Warwickshire - but his birth was never registered, and he wasn't baptised.

In 1901, Horace Bailey (my great grandfather) is living with his father, William Henry Bailey and William's wife Lizzie. The family was living in Balsall Heath.  Class: RG13; Piece: 2813; Folio: 137; Page: 7

I'm not in a position where i can buy certificates or travel up to Warwickshire to do research in person.

This has been bugging me for years now, please help

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Jones Family in Wolvey
« on: Sunday 15 June 08 17:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to trace the parents of Samuel Jones (my 4x great grandfather).

Samuel was baptised in Wolvey in July 1795.

Samuel is one of 6 children, the eldest is Mary, who was baptised on 31 Jan 1790, also on Wolvey.

Their parents are called John and Elizabeth.

Also, according to IGI, John and Elizabeth had 2 sons by the name of Michael.  One born 1798 and the other 1800.  Both were baptised on 20 July of the respected years.  Could i be right in thinking these could be 2 of the same person

What does this year bit mean - is it 1703 or 1704?

My great grandfather, Horace BAILEY (known in family as Bill) was in the Marines.

according to his military records, which i have been able to get copies of, he was born on 26 september 1898 - in Birmingham.  When he signed up, on 12 april 1916, his next of kin is named as a Mrs A Bailey, of 11 middle street, peckham, London - mother, 2/5/1917.

having spoken to family and friends, it is most common to use father as next of kin - unless of course he is either signed up in military as well or deceased.  And it is common for kids to lie about their age (especially at this time) in order to enter the military.

he married on boxing day 1924 (this is confirmed by marriage certificate)., aged 26  yet, his father is listed as william henry bailey - and assuming, stilll living.

He died on 5 feb 1964 (confirmed on military information and death certificate).

I have searched all the birth records and approaced the birmingham records office and no one can find him

what's puzzling me is:

* he signed up DURING the great war - unless dad is away fighting, deceased or disagreed with son signing up - why was mum listed as next of kin

* did he lie - about age,  date and plae of birth, to enter marines?

* is father on marriage certificate real, another relative or false?

if anyone can help  please email me at email address removed by moderator - please use the secure Rootschat personal message system to exchange personal email addresses - thankyou

Kent Lookup Requests / Dorothy Annie Gilham
« on: Saturday 10 June 06 20:05 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my great grandmother on my dad's side.

Her name is Dorothy Annie GILHAM.

On her marriage certificate - dated september 5 1921 at St John the Divine in Chatham to Albert JONES - her father is named as Walter Thomas Gilham (deceased), a boiler attendant.  One of the witnesses was an Agnes Gilham

On her birth certificate - dated 10 September 1902, Rochester - no father is listed (name nor occupation) - her mother is named as Agnes Gilham a tailoress.  Her, Dorothy, birth was registered on 10 october 1902.

Is there anyway i can find who her father is?

According to his military papers, he was born in Birmingham on 26 september 1898.

His next of kin at the time was Mrs A Bailey - his mother, who was living in London.
