Hi,

I'm trying to discover more about a Todd Watson for a lady in Australia.

Would be interested to find any information about him in the Masonic membership registers for the Mariners Lodge at Selby around 1801.

I understand that one of the members was a Todd Watson and should like any details together with any other Watsons who might also have been members at that time.

Although we know much of his later life, we have yet to find a baptism for Todd, who was born c.1780. As 'Todd' is an unusual name for that time it may have been a nickname given to him when young.  Hopefully his father may also have been a member of the lodge.

Thanks in anticipation.

Ian

Cheshire / All Saints, Mobberley?
« on: Saturday 17 October 15 08:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
According to FamilySearch, Cheshire BTs record the burial of Hannah Attenbury on the 11th August 1859 at All Saints, Mobberley. But, so far as I can determine, there is only St. Wilfred's in Mobberley. Can anyone help locate this church please?

World War One / WW1 Cap badge identification request
« on: Monday 04 August 14 22:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've visited a few sites displaying WW1 cap badges but so far have been unable to identify the one on the included photo. Any help gratefully accepted. :)

This is a bit lengthy, but please bear with me.

I've been told by an elderly second cousin that a relative of his was Arthur Franklyn who was one of the first speedway riders in Manchester. He also took part in the 1929 TT and Australian newspapers report that during the winters of 1929 and 1930 he entered several speedway events there and was described as one of the top four riders in the world. In 1931 became an aviator and competed in the King's Cup flying his own AVRO Avian and in 1932 it was reported that he had been given a commission in the RAF and would be flying to Egypt. He later returned to speedway in the 1950's and was a promoter for the team in Ipswich where he died in 1983.

But I'm having difficulty establishing his family. From his aviator's certificate I've found his DOB as 21 Mar 1907 at Ashton-on-Mersey and he gives his home address as 71 Haworth Road, West Gorton. There is an entry on CheshireBMD for an Arthur Franklin in 1907, but so far I haven't found a corresponding marriage.

My cousin tells me that Arthur's mother was Louisa Ann Lomas and that "she married a jew from the Lewis family". An entry in the London Gazette, two years after Arthur's birth, casts doubt on the marriage as it describes his mother as a spinster: 'In the Matter of the estate of ARTHUR FRANKLYN, deceased. Harold Franklyn, an Infant, by Annie Franklyn, his next friend, against Sarah Ellen Franklyn (Spinster) and Louisa Ann Lomas (Spinster), the persons to whom Sarah Ellen Franklyn and Louisa Ann Lomas (the executrices of Arthur Franklyn, late of 12, Bank-street, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, formerly of Springfield, Stockport-road, Cheadle Heath, in the county of Chester, Stock Jobber, who carried on business under the style of Freeborn Franklin and Co., and who died on or about the 25th day of April 1909), have incurred liabilities in carrying on the business of the said Arthur Franklyn after his death, are, on or before the 17th day of December, 1909, to send by post . . . '

So as the index for the 1911 census has an Arthur Franklin b.1907 living in Chorlton with a Louisa also present, I should be grateful if someone can provide me with the entry for the family so that I can start to piece together the relationships before I apply for a copy of the will mentioned in the London Gazette.

Thanks.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / 1841 census - Brooks
« on: Tuesday 07 June 11 18:51 BST (UK)  »
I’m trying to locate some ancestors in the 1841 census and should be grateful for advice or discussion about my search.

The ancestors concerned are William Brooks and Amy Rayner(or Rainer) who, I believe married at Bunwell in 1835. In the census returns, William consistently gives his birthplace as Tacolneston while Amy gives Bunwell. So far I have been unable to find any baptism records for them.

I have located them in the 1851 (HO107/1821 Folio 833 p24), 1861(RG9 1233 folio 111 p4), 1871(RG10/4133/106 p13), and 1881(RG11/4127/F23 p2) census, but not the 1841, although I have found their young children. In the 1871 census, William’s wife is called Hannah and Bunwell is given as her birthplace, so this may still be Amy. By 1881, William is a widower, but Amy/Hannah’s death certificate still remains elusive.

The couple’s ages fluctuate in the census: William – 1881(63), 1871(55), 1861(39), 1851(47); Amy/Hannah – 1871(50), 1861(43), 1851(36).

Their children, Sarah(5) and Mary Ann(3) can be found in the 1841 census living with Amy’s parents (HO107/757/3 Folio17 p1). I thought that William and Amy might be in the workhouse in Pulham St Mary as that is where they were in 1861. I don’t have access to the workhouse census and it may be that they are recorded there under their initials. If someone is able to check, I’d be very grateful.

The only Amy Brooks that I have found in 1841 is nearby at Thorpe Abbotts living with the Paul family (HO107/758 Folio8 p11), but if it is the same Amy Brooks, what is she doing there? The only William Brooks I’ve found is again at Thorpe Abbotts (HO107/758 Folio7 p8), but I suspect is not the one I’m seeking as the sons with him have baptism records as the sons of William and Jane Brooks.

So can anyone advise me as to whether this Amy Brooks is the one I’m looking for and suggest where her husband might be?

All help gratefully received.

Regards,

Ian

Lancashire / Trying to find a death - Hannah Brooks (1871 -1881)
« on: Thursday 09 September 10 18:44 BST (UK)  »
I’m trying to find a death certificate in the FreeBMD indexes but having no success and should be grateful for any guidance – let me explain:

The 1871 census for Bacup records William and Hannah Brooks living with their family at 2 Bland Street (Ref: RG10/4133/106 p13).  Ten years later, William is living with one of his daughters at 49 Rock Street, Newchurch and is described as a widower (RG11/4127/F23 p2). So far I have been unable to locate Hannah’s death certificate and FreeBMD claims to hold 100% of the death entries for this period. I did check with the register office that a Dinah Brooks in the index for 1874 at Haslingden was not a mis-transcription of Hannah and they assured me that it wasn’t.

The family migrated from Norfolk between 1861 and 1869 and although William’s wife is called Hannah in Lancashire,  he married an Amy Rayner at Bunwell, Norfolk in 1835. She last appears as Amy in the 1861 census (Ref: RG9/1233/111 p4) and although I can’t be certain that Hannah and Amy are the same person, their birth place is always recorded as Bunwell and I haven’t found a suitable marriage entry for William & Hannah or a death for Amy.

Most of their children moved to Droylsden and I did think that perhaps she died while on a visit to them or to relatives in Norfolk, but have had no luck in locating her death or burial.

Could it be that the death was not recorded? All advice gratefully received.

Ian

I'm sure this photo could be improved by someone skilled in removing creases and constructive surgery. Any attempts gratefully received.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Henry Hepworth in 1871 & 1861 census
« on: Friday 14 May 10 17:30 BST (UK)  »
In the 1881 census, a Henry Hepworth is recorded under the name Epworth at 24 Gorton Lane, Gorton, Manchester (Ref: RG11 3901 Folio 4 Page 2). The family can also be found later in the 1911 census at 9 Leighton Street, Moston. His wife is Esther Purdon and I can find their marriage in the BMD index for Salford, Q1 1879. As they have children older than their marriage, I assume that Henry was married before.

But I have been unable to locate Henry (and his wife) in the 1871 or 1861 census. Neither can I find the births of their children William, Benjamin or Edith in the BMD indexes.

Any help information or guidance gratefully received.

Thanks,

Ian

Worcestershire / Wolleys at Dudley
« on: Saturday 18 April 09 18:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
On the 20th February 1815 Thomas Perry married Fanny Woolley at St Thomas in Dudley. But in trying to identify the parents of Fanny I find on the IGI that there are two possibilities:
1.   Bp on the 25th February 1798, the daughter of Mason Woolley and Anne
2.   Bp on the 16th December 1798, the daughter of Thomas Woolley and Fanny

Today I've received a copy of the marriage entry in the hope that one of the witnesses would help me identify the parents; and one of the witnesses was George Woolley (brother?), the other being Mark Bond. But when I again search the IGI for a possible matching baptism for George Woolley I find again two possibilities:
1. Bp 1794 the son of James Woolley & Sarah
2. Bp 1803 the son of Benjamin Woolley & Ann

So none of the parents match with those for Fanny.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might proceed?
