Lanarkshire / Great Grandfather Niven still evading capture..
« on: Monday 16 October 06 14:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks

My great grandfather William Niven born between 1823-28 to parents William Niven and Isabella McIntyre is still eluding me. The information comes from William's MC and his DC. William's daughter was the informant on his DC. On the 51-61 Census' it states he was born in Lanark.

I have searched  for (Niven/Nivin/McNiven/MacNiven/Nevin): -

BC William Niven (1820-35)
BC William McIntyre (1820-35)
BC's of other siblings with parents William Niven & Isabella McIntyre
MC William Niven & Isabella McIntyre
DC Isabella Niven (nee McIntyre)
DC Isabella McIntyre
DC William Niven (Snr)
Every 1841 Census looking for any Niven that's a Coachman.

William Snr was a Coachman's Contractors so have checked the 1827 Business directory.  William Jnr was married in Dunoon so have also checked out the Niven's in that area . I know there was a Coachmans' hostlery/inn in Dunoon but do not know any more about it.

I realise that the wrong names could be on the DC but the naming of his children would suggest otherwise. I have also checked out William Niven/Isabella Thomson  plus William Niven/Isabella Fotheringham.

Have I exhausted all avenues or is there something else I could explore?

kind regards
Seonaig

Lanarkshire / Arggh!! One for those who like a challenge.....
« on: Saturday 27 May 06 02:01 BST (UK)  »
Good Morning/afternoon or Evening

My 2x Grt Grandfather William NIVEN is proving to be a major brick wall.  :(

His DC says his parents were William Niven & Isabella McIntyre
(Informant was his daughter) and that he died in 1876 age 48 - so  b. c1828

His OPR MC only has his name, profession and the brides name, nothing else.

1851 census has him age 28 - c1823 born Lanarkshire, Glasgow
1861 census has him age 36 - c1825 born Glasgow
1871 census has him age 48! - c1823 born Lanark, Glasgow ???

Cannot find him anywhere on Scotlands People (with these parents)
or on the IGI & BDM at any date.

Have tried Niven, McNiven, MacNiven, Nivin, Nevin, McIntyre.... ::)

Does anyone have any suggestions as to anything else I can try ?

best regards

Down / MATIERs in Donaghadee
« on: Tuesday 23 May 06 03:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I 'm trying to find my MATIER ancestors in Donaghadee. My Grt Grandmother, Isabella MATIER from Ballyfrenis, was a hotel worker. She would have been born c1885 +/- 10 yrs (sorry I can't narrow it down more).

I know its a longshot, so any thing would be appreciated.

Thanks
Seonaig
