Travelling People / Mary Ann Hanley b 1851 Kirkcaldy Fife Scotland
« on: Thursday 01 February 07 20:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Am wondering if anyone has come across a family named HANLEY (or HANDLEY, HENLEY) - the father's name John Hanley, occ Commercial Traveller or Hawker?  His daughter Mary Ann Hanley was born in 1851 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, and married in 1871 in Portsea, Hampshire, to John Hughes, occ Bootcloser.  On the 1871 Census in Portsea, Mary Ann's surname is written as Henley.    I am unable to find her family on the 1861 Census in England or Scotland.   One Mary Hanley &  family show up in 1851 in Edinburgh that may possibly be them, but no father is shown as present. The mother gives her occupation as "Hawker's wife" from Lincolnshire.   Wonder if they could possibly be Travellers?  Anyone heard of them?   Juniper

Fife / Hanley, Kirkcaldy, Fife

Hi,
I am looking for a family that lived in Kirkcaldy, Fife in 1851 and possibly 1861.  The father was John Hanley, occ Commercial Traveller, and daughter was Mary Ann Hanley.  I believe she was born in about 1849/50.  Mary says she was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland.  However, I cannot trace them on either census in Scotland or England.   I have Mary on the 1871 Census in Portsea, England so I know that she at least moved to England.  I have her marriage in Portsea to John Hughes, bootmaker.   But, I  don't have her birth regn and do not know anything else about her family or origins in Scotland. No trace anywhere.    Any help greatly appreciated.  Thanks. Juniper

Lanarkshire / Looking for: Kenny & Linn in Shettleston, Glasgow, Scotland
« on: Wednesday 24 January 07 13:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,  I am researching a family named KENNY who lived at 10 Academy Street, Shettleston, Glasgow. (Not sure when).

I believe, the father, Peter Christopher Kenny, was born in about 1893 in Shettleston.  His wife's name was Margaret Linn.

They had six children but only three survived:  Robert, Margaret and Peter. Also understand that Peter snr served in the Army in WW1 but no details.

I believe Peter Kenny died in 1942 aged 49.

If anyone can help with Scottish Census lookups or births of any of the above, I would be most grateful.   Records I have seen don't show the family at 10 Academy Street in 1901.  Any help finding more about this family or pointing me in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Wm. Irwin & Sons, Builders, Burley Road, Leeds
« on: Wednesday 31 May 06 01:01 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information and help in tracing the IRWIN family from Ireland who settled in Leeds in the mid 1800s.  I believe George Irwin from Dublin and his son William founded a firm of builders in Burley Road  in about 1867 which was still operating into the 1960s. I believe my 4xg.gfr was George's brother Robert Irwin, a hatter, who settled in  London.   Any help greatly appreciated. J.

Norfolk / Vincent family, Docking, Ringstead, Bagthorpe, Norfolk
« on: Thursday 29 September 05 09:55 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone else researching the Vincent family from the Docking area of Norfolk in the early 1800s?

I am looking particularly for John Vincent, farmer, b. 1788 in Docking and wife Francis Davis (Fanny) from Ringstead and their children:  Mary Ann (became Stupart) b. 1813, William b. 1817 and Phoebe b. 1832; John,  plus others.

John Vincent  b. 1788, was a  farm bailiff and moved about with his work from farm to farm in areas such as Bagthorpe, Norfolk,  Little Henny in Essex and Great Waldingfield, Suffolk.  Two of his children, Mary Ann and William settled in Marylebone London and some grandchildren settled in Shropshire and Staffs.

Am presently  trying to trace the origins of, and find descendants of,  the Vincent family in Docking and the Davis family in Ringstead.

If you think there is a connection or you can offer advice, please contact me.

Europe / GERMANY: Immigrants to East End from Germany
« on: Friday 25 June 04 21:56 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the surnames GOBENER/GOEBENER and SCHWARMANN/SWARMANN/SWARMAN. I am looking for descendants of TEWES GOBENER, sugarbaker from Selsingen? Hannover who settled in Whitechapel in the mid 1800s, & his wife EMMA SCHWARMANN. She was the daughter of HENRY SCHWARMANN who I believe was from  Bremen, Germany.   TEWES & EMMA had a large family, so I believe there may be some descendants still in UK.   If anyone has any information I would be grateful for their help. Thanks.
