Dorset / Sir Charles Henry Cartwright Mayor of Bournemouth 1919-1922, 1928
« on: Sunday 23 September 12 16:15 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to discover the background of Sir Charles.

He was born in 1862, and died in 1859. As far as I can tell, the only Charles Henry Cartwright with a birth registered in 1863 was in the Apr-Jun quarter, registered in Birmingham. He married a Lucy Hendren, and sure enough they found their way to Bournemouth - in the 1911 census he is described as a wine merchant: in previous censuses he was a publican. They are in St Anthonys Road with their daughter Winifred born in 1891.

I am trying to find some reference to the family of Sir Charles, which would show these two are the same person.

Unfortunately, my location in a distant part of the world limits my access to actual resources, and I have failed to find anything on the internet that ties these two together conclusively. If anyone out there has specific local knowledge I would be very happy to hear :-)

Warwickshire / Charles(?) HENDREN married Birmingham 1818
« on: Tuesday 18 September 12 21:27 BST (UK)  »
The IGI gives the following entry:

Charles HENDREN married Maria MAYFIELD, St Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick. (Batch M04179-1).

There appears to be no other record of any kind (not that I've found!) relating to a 'Charles Hendren'.

It seems more likely that his name was George Hendren, based on the baptism records of what appear to be his two children (he - whether Charles or George - died before the first census, so I have no record of him with them).

If anyone has access to the records of St Phillips, could they check the entry, as I suspect the IGI may be in error.

Maria Mayfield is alternatively called Marianna or Maria Anna. She would have been a minor, as appears to have been born on 10 Aug 1801.

With thanks for any assistance  :)

Oxfordshire / William DENTON - Wootton b 1784?
« on: Monday 16 April 12 15:22 BST (UK)  »
My 4xGreat grandfather is William DENTON, born about 1784, died 1860. I first find him in London where, on 20 May 1806 in St Pancras, he marries Elizabeth Bullen Horlington. He seems to have had 3 children all born in London (there may be more) - Sarah Diana (b 1809), William (b 1811) and John Edward (b 1813).

It is the 1851 census that gives place of birth as 'Wootton, Oxon'. I have been unable to find any references to him prior to his marriage in 1806, nor any likely birth records for him.

Does anyone have a missing William in their tree from the Wootton area and are wondering where he disappeared to?  :)

Happy hunting!

Paul

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Felix HENDREN/Anne HAWKESFORD St Martins Birmingham
« on: Thursday 25 August 11 20:44 BST (UK)  »
I have an IGI entry for the marriage of Felix Hendren to Anne Hawkesford at St Martins on 11 October 1787.

If someone has access to the records of St Martins, I would be very grateful to know how the whole entry reads.

Thank you  :)

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Edward HENDREN/Mary TOWNSEND Aston Juxta Birmingham
« on: Wednesday 24 August 11 16:25 BST (UK)  »
The IGI shows the marriage of Edward Hendren to Mary Townsend on 11th December 1830 at Aston Juxta Birmingham.

The IGI gives Edward's name as 'Kendren' but I suspect this is a mistranscription.

If someone has access to the records of Ss Peter & Paul, could they check this entry for me? I doubt it will give fathers' names (I don't know Mary's), but the witnesses may possibly help.

Many thanks

The IGI lists a marriage in Kildwick on 11 Jul 1754 between a Bryan COWGILL/Ann TEMPEST.
(The name on the IGI is incorrectly recorded as 'COWCILL')

Would anyone with access to the Kildwick registers please confirm whether or not any further information is given? Of particular interest is whether Ann is a spinster or widow - my suspicion is that both parties were older, and that Ann had been married before.

Thanks for the assistance!

There are several entries on the IGI for the baptism of a John TEMPEST, given as 'Caroling, Yorkshire'; also for his wife Anne SMITH, her baptism being 12 Feb 1692, also 'Caroling, Yorkshire'.

Unfortunately, these are family submitted entries, and there seem to be no corresponding entries in the 'reliable' IGI sources.

If anyone has access to the Kildwick Registers for this time frame, I would be very grateful if they could confirm whether either entry exists!

John and Anne married on 30th September 1717 or 1718 - this information at least seems reliable  :)

The IGI lists the following birth record in the Kildwick Parish Records:

Susanna WHITAKER born 12 Aug 1806 baptised 12 Jul 1807 Father : James WHITAKER Mother : Mary Smith

Having looked at this for some time, I am wondering if this is an error: there appear to be no siblings anywhere in the registers, nor a marriage for James and Mary; references to later subsequent census records and other information would make it seem far more likely that Susanna's father's names was John, not James.

If someone has reference to the actual registers, could they please confirm whether the registers and the IGI agree with each other?

With thanks for everyones kind efforts!

Christopher Smith married Martha Greenwood at the Parish Church in Kildwick on 21 December 1813.

If anyone has access to the actual record, I would be very grateful to know any other details that may be of use: in particular, who were the witnesses to the marriage.

Thanks  :)

Paul
