Scotland / Is Mackdonald the same as Macdonald?
« on: Saturday 30 March 24 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
Working on a Macdonald name study, I found that there a large number of "Mackdonald"s in the census records in England, especially in London. I'd assumed it was a mistake by English census recorders.

But then I discovered this website in Ireland
https://www.mackdonald.com/

Which has got me wondering again - was there ever a real branch of the Clan Donald that used the "mack" instead of "mac"? - and was it mainly in Ireland?

All suggestions welcome!

Inverness / Towemers, Invernessshire?

Here's an oddity that has me scratching my head.

Henry Show MacDonald

The census record gives his place of birth as : "Towemers N B, Invernessshire".

But that was written at Amersham with Coleshill, Buckinghamshire, in England, presumably by an English-speaking census recorder, who knew not the Gaelic.  Can anyone think of a place in Invernessshire that would be Anglicised as "Towemers"?

I've been through Scotland Places for anything starting with T, but saw nothing likely.

Inverness / Any correlation between first names and places of origin?
« on: Sunday 17 March 24 21:44 GMT (UK)  »
I've notice several posts commenting that people's first names tend to show some slight indication of either where they came or whether they were Catholic or Protestant. Do RootsChat folk feel there's any substance to that (or not)?

I may well be clutching at straws, but my oldest-known Macdonald ancestors were devotees of the names Henry, Thomas and John, repeating through the generations.

I have tried finding connections by DNA, but my haplogroup R-S221 hasn't revealed much so far. Except they say it occurs more in Norway than anywhere else. So I'm staring at Clan Donald places like North Uist on the OS maps, and places with Norse connections, to see if "map divining" might reveal something.  :)
Like I said, clutching at straws.
